Perhaps, $399 sounds reasonable, eh?
Cheaper would be nice, but $200 less than the Air when it has a newer SOC and better front cam with center stage doesn’t make sense. I mean I’d love the air at $500 and the mini at $400 (like with the A12 versions that were released together in 2019), but given that the air has been $600 for a year, $400 for the mini is not realistic.

Have to believe it's battery related. Still though, it's disappointing for tech nerds. However, the real market this is aimed at are not going to care. This will be everything and more for the users truly interested in this as a main device. I seriously doubt those who care about benchmarks and want max performance are looking at this as a replacement for a main device.

Economies of Scale would be my guess.

Go with an A14, OR order more A15, & get the financial benefit, which affects the margin of the iPhone 13 family, & which is a BIG deal to Apple's Upper Mgmt.

For the sake of argument, assume Apple got a 5-10% better deal for ALL A15 chips simply by increasing the order to include the new iPad mini.

&, as some have already stated, NOT ALL A15 chips will perform the same.

During final test, those that don't meet iPhone 13 family spec, simply move to the new iPad mini "bucket".

So basically I should wait until the next version? I plan on using it for basic things like browsing and maybe doing work/college.
You will keep waiting for the next best thing. History of the iPad mini update shows that’s Apple tends to wait 2 or more years if you can wait that long then maybe this product is not for you and are trying to substantiate a purchase for your purpose. People who have already placed orders know exactly what the product is and it’s intended purpose and are not waiting for the next best thing as when it gets released guess what these people will upgrade and you will still be waiting for the next best thing.

Rather than talk about arbitraries and opinions I'm going to use myself as an example…

I'm a "computing professional" that has to support macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, basically a jack of all trades. So I need devices from "both sides" and when I see the new iPad mini I think fab… this is for me! That'll be perfect to kick my Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e out of my every day bag and I get a new iPad at the same time. Perfect thing for the perfect time. And then I see the 889€ price tag for the 256GB 5G version.

For me, form factor is important in this particular place however when I look at 889€ I need to consider I (well, my client that gave it to me as a Christmas present rather than *I*) bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ 256GB 5G for 50€ less and my S5e (everything is 128GB+ and LTE/5G) was less than half the price that's not particularly good value. So to put it lightly I thought "f*&# that s@#^!!" and did nothing.

So rather than say its too expensive I would probably say its low value comparatively to other things.

Don't get me wrong, the new iPad mini will kick the pants off of my S5e around the block and every way sideways but everything has its price.
Yeah, but she goes into every thread and says “it costs too much,” so I;’m not sure how your personal experience is relevant.

If it costs too much, what *should* it cost? Comparing it to the iPad 9, which she did, is silly, because the mini has many capabilities and features that the 9 does not.

again, the ipad air is $599....so if the ipad mini would have been cheaper than the ipad air makes no sense...
$499 is the right price for what we get

ipad is 329 the ipad air is 599 ...if the ipad mini would have benn what..399? lets get real...who in the right mind would get the base ipad just to save 70 bucks.....$499 is nothing nowadays for a device that you use it almost everyday for 2-3 for some even for 5 years ive heard
Your Air vs mini argument makes less sense. Most people buying one vs the other are probably doing so because of screen size than price.

Apple artificially gimped the Mini 6 so it doesn't cannabalize the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Otherwise, what's the point of paying $1199 for 256GB iPhone 13 Pro Max if the $749 iPad Mini 6 Cellular has feature parity?
Camera and display quality for a couple

Well bin me! Why give less than your best Apple?
Tbh I understand it because it allows them to use a ton of chips with only slightly less performance than the higher binned ones instead of just throwing them away. Helps keep costs down too (relatively speaking)

Apple should be focusing its resources on future chips instead of crippling the current ones for lower models.
Amd let those otherwise functional silicon go to waste? It’s not like those processors are made off of some $10 plastic. Or do you want a starting price of $799 for 64GB model just so you get 8% better performance rather than $499 for the same 64GB but lose that 8% performance?

Agreed, most users will see the redesign, larger screen, faster from previous gen, Pencil 2 and landscape speakers along with CenterStage and will be sold on it. I don’t believe many complainers know what type of customer likes the iPad mini. I know children to adults and professionals that require something pocketable, responsive for their profession and this hits all those marks and I forgot the same if not better battery life.
I was sold on it to begin with and all these revelations about how "crippled" it is haven't changed a thing, it'll still do what I want it to do quite well. The form factor, small and light, yet big enough, is why I like it.

Once again… please read my comment. In this thread I never said “it costs too much” I said: Still managed to cost $499 😂.

Again, there’s a huge difference. 🫂

My 2017 iPad Pro has more advanced components, especially on the display dept. and runs buttery smooth despite being 4 years old!
What is the point you are trying to make as the iPad Pro of those years had 4GB of RAM it was not the Silicon that was limiting its abilities.

iPad mini being weaker than the 13 is odd.

I would think the iPad mini could do a better job using the better binned parts, managing heat, multi-tasking, etc.

But then again, maybe Apple heard everyone complaining about iPadOS being to limited for the chips, and took that to mean they could stick lesser chips in there :)

Well if you read my statement again, you'd realise that we are both right. Although I was only aware of cpu and gpu chips with some failed cores but not reduced core frequency. So if that is really what is happening, it's fine in my view.
