Yeah starting in 2016 they really fell behind in laptop design: bad keyboards, bad resolution, bad webcams, bad price, bad port choice..With the M1 and these rumored changes to the MBP, let’s hope they’re turning it all around. It’s been a bleak 5 years for the MacBook.
Calling them out for bad webcam is a bit disingenuous when the quality of video image from the webcam is better than most windows laptops.

in the end, though, webcams are limited by the display thickness. To improve using currently available camera tech there needs to be a reverse camera bump on the rear of the camera to house a larger camera sensor and perhaps while the bump exists throw a Face ID IR sensor in there. Then curve the bump gradually like a svelte sleek 60’s sports car and look pretty good to boot.

Yup, there's probably not a lot they can do other than make the lid thicker, or, as you say, at least make it thicker at the area of the webcam.

I keep wondering if the L16 was on to something, though.

You can artificially improve your optics by placing three or more lenses adjacent to each other. More light will be let in, and (less importantly) you can focus on different distances.

I’m with @The Game 161 just release the iPad Pro so we can’t stop with the endless rumors. I’ve got no complaints with my 2018 12.9, but plan to replace it with whatever comes out this year. My wife and I also want to get the new iMac as a home office computer.

Fingers crossed for a March release of a 12.9” iPad Pro. I’m on the first gen 12.9” Pro and the touch screen is becoming increasingly less responsive. It’s really starting to get on my nerves!
I have exactly the same problem like you with the 1.gen 12,9. Lately I even recognized ghost-touch behaviour. Only with Apple Pencil it works reliable.

The ipad Air is the successor of the 11 inch pro, only 12.9 pro going on, with macos mode.
This or at least Major improvements to iPadOS is the only thing that will even remotely encourage me to upgrade my 2018 iPad Pro.

No amount of faster chip or better screen technology will cut it anymore, the operating system, at least for my use cases, just won’t see a worthwhile benefit from them anymore to warrant the upgrade price.

I have the 2017(?) version that came out before the move to USB-C. Same issues as you two. First time I’ve been bitten by Apple with bad support. A month out of AppleCare and they wouldn‘t do anything to help me.

Apple has the M1 chips and extra ram to blow away expectations. I think they will reserve mini LED for the top end models of anything they put them in for the first year or two, becuase they get more money out of you that way. It wouldn't matter to me if thats the case except you can't also get the fastest chip on anything but the top priced model. I'd be much happier with a build to order system rather than a priced precisely to up-sell you to a higher model system the currently have.

Apple will likely also adopt Mini-LED backlighting for new MacBook models to be unveiled in the second half of this year, according to the report. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models to launch in the second half of 2021 with a new design, the return of an HDMI port and SD card reader, the removal of the Touch Bar, classic MagSafe charging with a breakaway power cable, and more.
It seems Apple really prepare for broader push into PC market and removing many obstacles that could hold switchers from jumping into ship.

IF it was microled you would be able to afford it :)

If only it were micro led. I guess certainly better than no improvement and I don’t think OLED is a great choice for laptops at this point. For iPad however OLED would be great. My galaxy tab s5e was purchased strictly due to the screen being so phenomenal. (And the lower price point)

Most of the time I just swipe at something and nothing happens. It takes 3 or 4 tries, gets chaotic and will work for like a minute. But, more recently, I have noticed that I’ll “grab” something, like a browser page, and it starts scrolling when I haven’t even moved my finger yet. Or, in maps, it starts acting like I’m pinch zooming when I only have on finger on the screen!

Edit: I haven’t used my pencil in awhile but it does seem to be the only thing that doesn’t give me any grief. I might try using that when the touch screen is being a PITA.

This iPad has been something of a curse from day one. First the smart keyboard went to the someone else’s house, who then decided to keep it. My experience with Apple customer service was pretty good, but with FedEx was terrible! After that, I got hit with the unresponsive keyboard issue. Finally got that replaced after living with it for 2 years only for the unresponsive screen to start showing up. The pencil is the only thing that has been nearly flawless the entire time!

I will likely upgrade as well even though I have no need to with mine. I know I said to you was thinking of going to the 11 inch version but I've started using the magic keyboard again and love using it. I use my M1 air for work and my iPad for everything else. think this works quite well as no matter how much I like using my iPad as an iPad I like using it with the keyboard more and least I can use it as a tablet if needed by just taking it off after all.

I know exactly what you mean. I really enjoy using mine as a laptop, but also as a tablet. I think the beauty of the iPad Pro plus Magic Keyboard is just that. Excellent tablet, and nearly as excellent laptop style experience for my needs. Apple knocked it out of the park with the Magic Keyboard, which is why I’m really hoping for the 2021 to be compatible with it.

I would think it will be but maybe giving people an option to get a newer version

The current generation of MacBook Pro is approximately 226 PPI (2012-2021). The Smartphones are approximately 428-458 PPI by 2021.

It's a significant amount of difference in pixel density and Apple want to fix that problem by improving the PPI on the next generation of 2021 MacBook Pro.

You can see why Apple Laptop market share is less than 7% and it's shockingly bad.
Intel integrated graphics can't drive anything higher than what's already in the Macs.

I’ve used an iMac as my home office computer for years and it has been fantastic at that. I don’t care for the lack of expandability (something I think iMacs are perfectly capable of with good engineering) but it does well and lasts a long time.

Unfortunately, I now need to make room for my work setup so the iMac will have to go and I’ll need to create a new setup that my work laptop and my future MBP 16” will share.
