The only time I use portrait mode, is when an app that functions better in portrait mode, and not landscape mode. Other than that, I use landscape mode exclusively. When the prices on the current iPad Pros tank I may get a iPad Pro M4 13 inch to go with my M4 11 inch iPad Pro.

I never upgraded my 2018 iPad but have been setting up new, top end models for others. This has also involved adding keyboards for users hoping to replace their laptops.
As others have mentioned, the lack of shortcuts can be a big negative when, like me, you’re used to a laptop. For me at least, only having Airprint means an inability to use ICC profiles when printing, added to which I believe it’s not possible to use 3rd party driver installations.
This makes top-end iPad a complete non-starter. My wife and I went camping with 13” MacBook Airs this year and we didn’t miss the iPads!

If it's just for FaceID, then it only needs a dual IR sensor, not the whole camera. One glitch in the OS is enough to make it choose the wrong front camera.

Apple is completely lost! Why not just keep the M4 iPad Pro in the cycle longer? Adding a second front facing camera is exactly what people need….not!
Companies go under when they listen to complacency. Why faster? Why thinner? Why features I personally never use. As long as Apple doesn't listen to complacency with products like the iPad Pro, they'll be ok.

I don't know anyone who uses an iPad in portrait. At least not since Apple finally implemented app scaling for iPhone apps.

Since you mentioned your Apple Watch, have you tried it for Apple Pay? Having to remove an iPhone from my pocket to use Apple Pay meant I may as well just use my wallet. But Apple Watch means I can leave both my iPhone and wallet in my pocket, or at home, which I do daily for exercise.
At least for me, I usually use Face ID for payment when I’m paying something online and have the iPad or iPhone in my hands anyway. In that situation, Touch ID is faster and more convenient than Face ID with the double-press. I still experience the difference whenever I use my iPad mini 5 for payment or even just authentication.

It seems to be for the camera, not for Face ID. And the Face ID components are more expensive than the front camera.

Reading in general, and reviewing documents, are important use cases for iPads, and most people do that in portrait. At least on the 11”, I also prefer web browsing in portrait.

I hope the top camera has Face ID. The way I hold and use my iPad, I'm always blocking the side camera.

The bigger upgrade would be to have base 16 GB RAM. (Or at least base 12 GB.)

It would be great if Apple made 12GB and 24GB the standard DRAM tiers on the M5 iPad Pros instead of 8GB and 16GB.

I wonder if they’re all gonna have 16gb RAM (not only 1tb option)
thank you....I'm growing very concerned as there are *zero* rumors of a RAM bump for this....even on the leaked roadmap that shows RAM increases in other devices coming, it only stated "optimized for multitasking" for the M5 iPad Pro......like....what?!?

iPhones need much less RAM than iPad Pros for several reasons. The poverty spec iPhone 16e has 8gb of ram.
Every M4 device has 16gb of RAM
People have talked about running into refreshes/reloads on 8gb of RAM without the heaviest of workflows
the biggest thing- it's now getting "real" multitasking with 4 apps open at once
With all the AI/LLM things they are adding in the future combined with Apple wanting to do everything on device...
RAM is cheap
iPad refreshes are only 18+ months
Apparently they are/were using 12gb of physical RAM, binned down to 8gb in iPad Pro

ZERO reason it shouldn't have 16gb, but ffs at least put 12gb standard in it with iPadOS26.

If they ship the base with 8gb it will be the dumbest biggest hardware mistake they've made since..????

now this is true innovation
Courage. It takes courage to make a processor in the iPad faster then the M4 as probably .0000001% of people that own an M4 iPad Pro have issues with the iPad pros speed. Why would you want a car that can go 400MPH when you can have a brand new car that can go 440mph. 440 is higher than 400, simple as that. Therefore the new iPad will be innovative.

This is going to come as a shock, but a circular lens makes a circular image. How Apple or others haven’t developed a square sensor to take advantage of the full lens is beyond me. Stereo square camera sensors, even if the focal lengths were different, would give you a lot of advantages.
