Apple would know how many were shipped from their own online store purchases, as well as how many were sold in their own bricks-and-mortar Apple Stores.

My guess is that their channel sales partners also provide aggregate consumer sales data (depletions) on a daily basis, partly for channel shipment forecasting.

Apple probably doesn't need to know/really care how many white 32GB iPads were sold at the AT&T store in Salina, KS on Sunday, but they would need to know overall how many were sold nationwide by AT&T so they could accurately schedule production run quantities. How AT&T allocates quantities to their individual bricks-and-mortars shops is AT&T's responsibility, not Apple's.

Since some purchases are probably gifts that haven't yet been presented to the recipient, the activations wouldn't be accurate (although it would be fairly close). Also, an iPad that is sitting on a UPS or FedEx truck is a sale, even if the final delivery hasn't been made.
Ok so basically if Best Buy has stock on the shelves that hasn't been sold yet that's not included in the 3M?

----------

What makes this statement so frustrating is that it's almost true. Apple doesn't ever report how many of its products that it "ships" like many companies do. And that is because retailers have to buy Apple's products and then "resell" them. Hence they are, as you said, resellers.

Those iPads on the selves in Wal-Mart are counted as sold, because they are. The ones on selves in Apple's own stores are not counted, until they leave the store.

The numbers are sound, they sold 3 million. And while not all of them have made it into the end users hands, history proves they will not be gathering dust on selves next to Xooms and Playbooks.
Do you have a source for this? Wouldn't it be quite easy for Wal Mart or Best Buy to provide Apple sales figures?

I hope you're being sarcastic. The iPad 2 is an amazing device, just like the iPad 1 was, and if you purchased one of these models, you might have some remorse since you probably want the "new" iPad now, eh? So you're trying to justify in your mind by saying that the 3 is a "barely enhanced" 2? Nice try... the 3 is significantly improved. Wait until you get your hands on one. Enjoy your 2 in the meantime, though.
I got a 2, long ago. I was just curious, but couldn't possibly find a meaningful usage for it. Sold.

So, the "iPad 3" has:
- more RAM
- more GPU / CPU power.
- Retina display
- better camera.
- mostly un-usable 4G chip (luckily 3G+EDGE-compatible)

Since one could not possibly take an iPad as more than an occasional camera and that 4G isn't deployed except in a few cities (even 3G is far from common), these changes are mostly invisible to the user. Or, what more does an "iPad 3" do that an iPad 2 can't? I call it "barely enhanced" for a reason.

I don't know about Canada, but TD Ameritrade is owned by a Canadian bank, so perhaps they have a brokerage there, as well. (I assume "up north" means Canada). Apple's shares are traded on a lot of exchanges, including Toronto.
Correct assumption, as I assume this forum is mostly populated by Americans. But twice I had to deal with the TD, twice they were unhelpful. Just being wary now.

Even if it was a "barely enhanced iPad 2" (many disagree), there was probably plenty of pent-up demand from customers who really wanted a new iPad, but didn't want to buy the soon-to-be-old-model 2 because of the widespread rumors and general knowledge of Apple's product intro cycles. Maybe even a million or two out of that 3 million. People want iPads. Lots.
Lots? I guess living in a relatively poor city isn't necessarily representative of a country as a whole, but I have yet to see much people actively using iPads where they could, i.e. in coffee shops, libraries, metro, bus. I guess such settings are simply too dangerous for the device's integrity.

Voice is dead. Text is dead. The next device will be data only (1/2 the cost for premium buyers) and will under the data plan, do IM, text, voice, and every other protocol as well.

Virgin has it right now for $35 a month unlimited.

The future is now.

Rocketman
It may be now, but it's not here yet!

Well they certainly have that info, I'm not sure why they would provide it though? I'm not a business major. I do know that when third parties do report the do it all cagey. Like AT&T today saying they sold a record number of iPads.

As far as a souce goes, here is a link. I have seen this is several places but this is basically it:

I hope they don't have any distribution issues.

I'm arriving in the USA on March 28th... And I plan on buying the New Ipad. So, STOP buying and wait until I get mine!

:D

Apple's Store within a Store is still operated by Apple employees, last time I checked. I could be wrong. At any rate, that stock, if not sold will ship back to Apple, so no they don't consider it part of the 3 million unless it's actually sold to a consumer.

Where are all those who were claiming that demand had died off for iPads now?

Yeah, like this guy on CNBC the other day:
“We have to assume that the hype that follows the release of each new iPad will dissipate incrementally faster than the one before,” said Jim Iuorio, managing director at TJM Institutional Services.

Stop Whining!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, not being sarcastic. I'm really depressed by that number. It should be in the 5m range. Sure there are 50 million iPads out there now but there are over 500 million people combined in the launch countries. In the U.S. alone only 2 in 10 own an iPad. So plenty of room for growth right there alone. Then you have to consider the millions of Apple fans like you and me that filp our iPads every year to have the latest and greatest.

It's estimated that Apple sold 1m iPad 2s in the U.S. at launch. So, yes the 3m seems like a lot but when you match it against 10 of the richest countries in the world w/ approx 90% of those populations not owning an iPad yet it's not fantastic. It's just not.

That's very " UGLY " of YOU!!!!!!!!!

Your Face, Your Comments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's valid. It's not 45% of the tablet market. It's 45% of shipments for the tablet market. That's a more accurate statement. People are going to point out flaws in your statements because they aren't accurate. Apple reports on what has sold not in shipments. Go back and re read apples press releases carefully and notice the difference in the wording. Also one has to consider what is in people's hands ie install base.

Apple's wording is different because they are a retailer (mostly - judging by the number of people employed by them in retail). As a retailer they have to report SALES (although they still have shipments too). Regular manufacturers (like Samsung) can only report shipments. However, when it comes to IDC, they use the same methodology for Apple and everybody else. Live with it. Just like people did not believe that Android phones were selling... until they overtook iPhones by a large margin.

New iPad observations

:( I just bought a 32GB new ipad and here are my impressions.

Internet browsing is STUNNINGLY good.
Text like expected is crazy perfection.

Problem for me is when comparing it to my macbook pro w/ matt screen
to the new ipad, some clear differences emerge.

Colors on the main CNN website main were deeper on the macbook pro.
Streaming video also on CNN streamed much better on the macbook pro
then my brand new ipad! I then went to YouTube and played Radiohead's
House Of Cards computer generated video.
Yes... once again the video playing both at the same time it was very
transparent that the macbook pro has superior video graphics to that of the
new ipad!
I am fully aware one cost me over $2k and one only $650.
Thing is.. it is $650 (not $250) and touted as the most cutting edge screen portable display, but colors are good not great and video is not up to par compared with other mac products!

And finally the FaceTime camera on this new ipad only has VGA quality video. So when you broadcast video to your friends or family it simply is
not as great as the HD FaceTime camera on the new macbook pro's!
This was left out it seems to, contrast it from the macbook pro models prices. 720 lines @ 30 'Progressive' (complete frames) per second.

(I would love to see the macbook pro have a 13" model with the Matt screen
(no glass) option. As I had to purchase the 15" to get this the best of what Apple offers!)

So while yes this new ipad in so many ways is -profoundly cutting edge & visionary-... leaving out the HD FaceTime camera and putting in inferior
video playback what I already have is a not good enough for me.
Waited too long for it for this let down.
Goes back to the apple store to be returned!

I will always be an apple person for life, I just expect more from them then this 2012 product!

IDC specifically says they are talking about shipments, not sales. We already know that Android tablets aren't selling, which is why Google said they're getting aggressive on the tablet market this year. It should be interesting to see what they plan (cheap Nexus tablet, for one).

Also, Samsung doesn't even report tablet shipments, nor do any other companies, excluding RIM, as far as I know. The reason being is that they aren't nearly as impressive as Apple's numbers. Hell, Samsung even openly admitted they weren't doing well in the tablet segment.

Do you think it's BAD that Apple saturated the market with new iPads? It seems like people are perceiving the launch as a failure not because of the number of iPads sold, but that perhaps not EVERY one was sold.

Open up a brokerage account. There are plenty of online brokers (E-Trade, Scottrade, TD Ameritrade etc.).

Remember it took 3 decades to get PC ownership levels to where they are today. Mobile phone adoption was more rapid (it's over 100% in many developed countries). I think tablet adoption will be somewhere in between.

I totally agree. We may be a decade away from total tablet adoption. Certainly weight and price need to come down. Functionality needs to increase as well as ease of use. Siri is on top of the ease of use stuff (i.e., non-spoken interaction with a computer will someday be the exception). iPad 3 is pretty darn useful, but its ability to interact with the rest of the world is still limited to internet and a handful of internet appliances.

If you listen very carefully you can hear Samsung crying in the corner :p

Samsung's launches are a non-event. No one bothers, no one cares. I certainly don't. If they want to survive, they should just continue to focus on supplying screens to Apple. That's what they do best. My two cents worth.

A lot of hype re: past two launches of the iPad and lack of supply. There was even talk that Apple wouldn't be able to meet demand with the new iPad. I'm guessing many people pre-ordered in hopes that they would definitely get one instead of waiting or the feeling of being "left out" on Day 1.

Or perhaps it's more convenient to order online and have it delivered than to stand around waiting in lines on a weekday.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (Android 2.3.6; Linux; Opera Mobi/ADR-1203051631; U; en) Presto/2.10.254 Version/12.00)

Very impressive numbers. But they could have sold at least 3.000.001 if it was available here in Hong Kong. Sold out straight away, can't even order online :-(

Just played with at the Apple Store here. Silky smooth. Makes my Galaxy Note to look and feel sluggish and really laggy.

Great job, Apple.

A perfect launch. You can still walk in to an Apple Store and get any configuration of the new iPad. No lines, no sell out. Three million sold in three days and you can still get walk in availability. Very impressive. I hope the next iPhone launch goes just as good. Well done Apple. Two big thumbs up!!
