I'll be technologically depressed for a couple days if they actually do upgrade the thing right now. I've bought every iPad on day one and have been very satisfied with the new iPad, but the one thing I felt it's been lacking is a better processor. It's actually gotten more noticeable as more apps update with retina graphics. I'd totally be game to upgrade to this again come March, even if all they did was bump up the processor, but if it comes out this month, I'd be worried that I'd be caught in the same bind again come March if they do a more expansive redesign on the normal schedule.

I justify buying every year because the sooner you sell, the better the resale value, and I then also get a new warranty and can thus skip AppleCare, so that makes up some of my loss when I go to sell it and I always have the latest and greatest without having to worry about it malfunctioning. The yearly cycle makes it easy for me to do this without feeling like I'm going to get burnt. So, as much as I really do want an improved processor, I hope they're saving it for March or in some way signal that there will not be an update again in March.

What is the best way to sell your device? Are you using the Apple recycle program? -- I imagine its all a matter of timing as well. Hitting the sweet spot right before a new device is released huh?

Processor from A5x to A6/A6x
It is big change, actually, it is possible to apply on 4th generation. I believe.
But, it is no change to announce the slower iPad version than iphone 5 ?
It is so questionable

Display change to In-cell touch and IGZO
It is so make sense to change for new version,

Connector Change
It is so make sense

By the change of display and processor, they can reduce the thickness also.
More ever, they can improve the compatibility of LTE also,

s...

One of the rumor floating out there is that the reworked Ipad 3 will have new display with much less backlight and new LTE chip (the Qcom chip used in Iphone 5) that use a lot less. The big problem with Ipad 3 is that they were limited by the technology available late last year (when they were in the early production stage). The combination of less back light, new glass, new LTE chip will reduce the power consumption so Apple can cut down the size of the battery. So we will end up with a lighter, thinner, Ipad 3. And Apple also cut down on the manufacturing cost.

I have an Ipad 3 now and I wouldn't mind a new one come along. I can trade mine in for the new one. One of my big problem using Ipad 3 is the weight (holding it on one hand is tough)

This is the chip for the iPad mini, and it makes perfect sense that it would be. The a6 is not powerful enough on the graphics side to handle a retina display so count out any rumors of this going into a refreshed iPad 3, it has one less graphics core so it would be a downgrade to the a6x.

Yes there is the 32nm a5 which has much better power management but hey guess what the latest and greatest A6 chip is even more power efficient than the a5 and costs only a few bucks more to manufacture and can be used in both the iPhone and iPad mini.

This would also help to insure that the iPad mini has a competitive technical advantage over other similar form factor tablets instead of introducing it with 2 year old core architecture.

This!!!

Don't get me wrong I love my ipad but I never understand why more people don't have a problem with the weight....it's. HEAVY!!

It makes perfect sense that this is a new version of the full screen iPad, if the iPad mini rumors are true. The rumors for the mini version, summarized:

  • Smaller form factor.
  • Resolution matching the iPad2 to avoid resolution dillution, and it will look better because of the smaller screen.
  • New Lightning connector.
  • Price point matching the iPad2 or being slightly cheaper
  • Anodized aluminum casing.

It's not just a smaller iPad. It matches the form factor of the iPhone 5, which means that externally it looks one generation ahead of the current iPad. The solution is to update the current full size iPad (which they were going to do anyway because of the Lightning connector) with the anodized aluminum casing and possibly the Izgo displays that have been gracing the iPhone 5. This way, the choice between a Mini and the more expensive full size iPad becomes much more difficult, as both are competitive products. The A6 chip is now in full production, so if we're going with a complete external overhaul anyway, might as well give it the final bump that will put it on par with the new iPhone generation.

To summarize, this will happen because:

  • It puts the new full size iPad in a strong position opposite the rumored Mini.
  • It avoids the problem of the iPad looking outdated compared to the Mini and the iPhone.
  • This is the strongest reason for a quick refresh: right now, iPads always lag behind iPhones, which means that people know where the iPad is heading technology wise, because the iPhone indicates the roadmap. This includes the competition: everyone knows what an iPad will look like far ahead of it being released, including Samsung. The solution will be to release iPhones and iPads relatively close to each other featuring the same technology.

The iPad mini could easily sport the A6 chip.

From design perspective and from cost perspective.

Apple holding back on A6 on the iPad mini would (will?) be a non-technical issue.

The ONLY reason iPad mini's chip will be less than an A6 is for the purpose of the full sized iPad not looking outdated/old technology, until its updated.

Edit: Or production reasons.

If the iPad mini is 7.85", has a A6 processor, 512-1GB RAM, 16&32GB storage and a reasonable price (£300ish), it would sell like... a very, very fast selling thing.

then it will priced at $499, you want that?

I don't see then because then what would the 10" be priced at, 599? No. If they come out with a 7.85 retina iPad 3 with A6, it would be 449 or 399. Apple hasn't change the price of the wifi 16gb top of the line iPad since inception.

That doesn't really leave them with much left to update next year's ipad with. If we go with true global LTE, improved screen and smaller dock, that leaves just more ram, unless Apple also plans to include an improved processor.

Also, you typically want to spread out your releases over the year so people don't feel like they are blowing a hole in their wallet buying a new iphone and iPad both at the same time.

Don't get me wrong - I am not bitter about my new ipad possibly becoming old news 6 months from the day I bought it - it just seems unprecedented that Apple would update its product line so soon, and with such incremental (albeit meaningful) changes. Not to mention that many people base their buying decisions off the assumption that Apple update their offerings just once a year like clockwork.

Just hope Tim knows what he is doing...

Yes, I know. You're right. But Tim and the rest of his team probably know what they are doing. Now, we can only speculate and wait.

What are the rumors about a new iPad (iPad mini, iPad 4) release date? I am thinking of buying an iPad this year. Can I aspect a new iPad coming in october/november?

Considering the bottleneck in iphone production is the screen, this can mean excess a6 chips, which would be a natural fit in the ipad mini/refreshed ipad3.

I am liking the blocky shape of the ipad mini (quite reminiscent of the 1st gen iPad). What are the chances this will be the new form factor for the ipad4?

Just a test

It certainly may be an updated iPad 3, but it doesn't mean production is just around the corner.

For me, going to the iPad 3 from the iPad 2 made no sense. It would make sense with the A6 chip.

It could also mean the iPad mini comes in A5 and A6 flavors.

10 to 1 odds they have an a7 and a8 CPU in development and ready for next year
these things are planned out years in advance. its not like they only start the next product only after the current one starts shipping

early this year samsung's 32nm process was still not ready which is why we got the crappy A5X. now that 32nm production is done in volume we can expect great things next year

I just sold my iPad 3 AT&T cell model because I switched to Verizon when I got the new iPhone. All the rumors pointed to the Mini and a refresh of the "full size" so I'm patiently waiting now for mid October to arrive... If the Mini has a Retina display I could be interested, but I can't go back to non-retina. If they don't release an updated iPad 3 I'll probably just get one of the current models... I don't think I can wait another 6 months without an iPad... I've been using my old Dell Mini 9 netbook in place of one - blehhhh.

Some people pay zero attention attention to history. No new (full sized) iPad till March-April 2013.

No new iPhone til 3/4 quarter 2013.

The only unknown is the mini.

The end.

The thing you have to take into account when trying to predict the likely refresh cycle is this: what are the business drivers?

To put it another way, why does any company release a new version of any given line? The main reasons are to a) remain competitive with the competing devices on the market and b) encourage people to upgrade.

If the above is true, would you release a new iPad now? Is the iPad under any major pressure from competitors? Nope. Are current iPad users waiting to upgrade to a new new iPad? I don't think so. What I'm basically saying here is that there's no good reason from a business perspective to launch a new iPad right now. The current model remains untouchable and there're plenty of people still buying them. An iPad Mini makes sense for the Christmas market alongside the new iPods but the iPad 3rd Gen is still extremely strong. Releasing a new model now wouldn't do much to boost sales but would cost extra in R&D while cutting short the current generation while sales are still strong.

I don't doubt that Apple is already well into testing the next gen iPad with an A6 chip. We'll see the result in March or April of next year.

There is a huge problem with this line of reasoning. You said it yourself: the Mini. If the Mini does come out later this month, and all products keep following a yearly cycle, then the Mini will always be newer than the "normal" sized iPad. This simply will not do. This is why I believe they will be updating both, although after this they will resume their yearly release pattern.

Whilst true, until it materialises and proves otherwise I refuse to believe it'll be anything other than a cheaper, smaller, slightly gimped, lower specced iPad. As such, it matters not that it's newer as it'd be plain to see on price and display that newer =! better in this case.

Also, Apple like to spread their big releases to milk every last drop of marketing and media coverage, not to mention profit/growth, throughout the year. All new iPads in this quarter, assuming they don't follow it up with a quick successor in March/April would mean a looong expanse of time till late next year with no media frenzy. Similarly, why share media time with the new iPhone for their flagship tablet line?

Granted, I suppose it'd not be too much of a stretch to see a lightning equipped iPad sooner, ala that slightly tweaked iPad2 that appeared, but with an all new processor? Hmm, I'm hugely skeptical.

Point is, we've heard these cycle breaking rumours for years now, and they've rarely (never? I can only thing of longer cycles eg 4S) been even remotely accurate. Yes, I appreciate the irony of me saying this on MacRumors, I'm not criticising the discussion of such things, but I'm genuinely surprised a certain contingent fall for it every single time.

There's not much more they can do with it. It'll probably be a iPad 3S sort of release. It's great the way it is, so they'll just update the processor, connector, etc.
