CNet claims that the next iPad that is due to be announced on Wednesday will be named "iPad HD".
A developer who's previously provided reliable information with respect to things Apple and otherwise tells us the next iPad uses the HD moniker instead of going with "iPad 3."
The next generation iPad has been referenced as the "iPad 3" in most reports as a natural successor to the iPad 2 which was released last year.

Some case-makers have already started referencing the new device as the "iPad HD" though we were skeptical about their knowledge of Apple's plans. However, CNet's report and a similar report from VentureBeat suggests that iPad HD may well be the name.

The name was first predicted in a rumor from July, 2011. In that report by This Is My Next (now TheVerge), the author claimed the "iPad HD" would be a high-end device aimed more at professionals. The most recent rumors, however, have suggested the new device will arrive at the same price points as the current iPad 2.

Apple will be holding their media event on Wed, March 7th.

But Apple already designates "HD" for iPhone apps modified for iPad.

This wouldn't bode well for continuity's sake.

Saying something differently always sounds weird at first, especially when you've called it something else for so long. If it is iPad HD I'm sure we'll hear it so much in the news over the next few weeks that it'll sound strange without the HD.

Remember the 3GS ... Everyone was like wha??

It makes a lot of sense.
Apple won't want to keep naming their products by numbers, what if they get to something like the iPad 14. Just sounds silly.

At iPad 10, they just call all models after as iPad X and then tag them with the species name of different primates.

And maybe ATV HD? Just to keep the HD thing rolling and let everyone know Apple caught up to 2006?

I don't mind HD one bit. 3, HD, Pro, Mini, Plus, SE, it's just another moniker. More interested in what the thing can do.

iPad 3 or iPad HD... makes no difference to me. Just hurry up and release it so I can give Apple my money for it! :D

Apple sells 720p as HD ;)
I hope this does not relate to the new iPad (3, hopefully)
(Counting down in my head ...)

Why not just drop the numbering scheme on all of the iOS devices? How dumb would macbook pro 4 sound? Just make it the iPad and iPhone.

For native speakers, iPad had already a name on its own I think. However, for me, a non native speaker, adding HD rather than follow the numbering conventions or perhaps, iPad third generation, sounds silly and misleading.

I wish this is only a rumor

Calling the new iPad "HD" would be technically dishonest, considering their current iPad is technically HD. But IMO it sounds cool because they're implying that you will see a difference in clarity. It would only be a marketing gimmick though. But we all know Apple does not get too technical with their product descriptions.

Naming it 'iPad HD' would make sense since that sets it apart from the "old" iPad hardware (and other tablets in general). Additionally, they can now continue with iPad HD 2, iPad HD 3, etc.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

They should just call it the iPad RD. RD= Retina display. :p

The iPad 3 will be called the iPad Anal's Android and Microsoft Magic Tablet.

It does have a nice sounding roles off your tongue sound. :D
