I use this forum all the time for troubleshooting on my iPhone and MBP, so I figured I may as well sign up now that I have an iPad as well.

I actually bought the dark grey synthetic smart cover at the time of purchase of my iPad 3 because I didn't think the leather ones were worth the money. I found the tan leather one (my first preference) on ebay for under $50 so I bought one a few weeks later, but was a little disappointed with the way it looked once it was on the device. Google turned up this article where some guy used coffee to stain his smart cover, and I loved the way it looked. I actually achieved the end result by rubbing in motor oil of all things (another article described using olive oil but I imagine it would go rancid after a week or so) then topping it off with leather conditioner.

Congrats on getting the desired look you wanted! Does the smart cover have a noticeable odor now though?

No, just smells of leather. No kids handling the device to the poster a few posts above.

Used oil is a carcinogen, new oil is not (unless you live in California where everything including alcohol is a possible carcinogen :S)

Nice work! Not exactly my type of color but looks great anyhow.

In regards to the price, you should search online. I got my leather one (OEM) for $35 brand new on Amazon.

Congrats on the iPad.
Mine never leaves my side.

I have a grey smart cover, and it does
lack that Apple style.

The old leather look is nice...just remember to keep
it away from the fire. :)

The cover is starting to get some nice wear marks in it from carrying it in my uni bag.

How dent-resistant is the aluminum back? I currently have an icarbons brushed aluminum skin on the back to protect it from scratches, but I really don't want to crush the device out of shape (i use it mostly at home on my bed/on the couch in front of the tv so it's not really getting a rough treatment).

My MBP was in mint condition after 2 years of use due to having a snap cover on the top and bottom which I recently took off, and within a week I had dented the lid by dropping my iPhone on it accidentally from a height of about 2 feet...I don't want anything similar to happen to the iPad!
