A cheap 9.7"? I think it would be quite realistic to anticipate iPad Air 2 power levels, and in that case, I will snatch one to replace my iPad 2 if it is cheaper than the current iPad Air 2.

My iPad Air 2 is perfect for my needs. No rush for the latest or need to upgrade here.

I have an iPad Air and it is working fine for me. I want to upgrade but no compelling reason to stop using what I currently have. Hopefully the new iPads will give me a reason to upgrade.

I'm wondering what 'friendly price range' will mean for this new 9.7 model.
Friendly relative to the Pro price points. Not actually friendly. It'll probably be $499 and Air2 will continue as the old gen discounted model. If the new 10" Pro truly has the rumored fancy features, even $599 is probably too low. And thus $499 for an Air3 would be even friendlier, relatively.

Not really, it will be like the MacBook Pros where they keep a previous generation model as an entry level of the new.

The 10.5 will be the new Pro, and the 9.7 will probably drop the Pro name, but be the current 9.7 iPad Pro.

Keep the previous generation, but change its name? That would be confusing naming even for Apple.

Seems very odd to me for there to be a 9.7 inch and a 10.5 inch.
The 9.7" iPad is probably the current 9.7" iPad Pro, pitched as the entry level iPad. It's cheaper because you don't have to do anything to change the manufacturering process.

The 10.5" iPad is speculated to sport the same 2732x2048 resolution of the 12.9" iPad Pro, which works out to 326 PPI. Maybe Apple is using the same iPhone / iPad mini display panels for manufacturing efficiencies?

So the new 9.7 iPad is going to be an updated Air? Or no longer have the "Pro" naming? These rumors make no sense. I wish rumor sites would stop reporting crap based on supply chain rumors, especially what comes from DigiTimes. More often than not it's wrong.

Oh bloody hell, please please please just whack 2017 grade specs inside the current 9.7 inch Pro and release it so I can upgrade my iPad 2!

It's hard to fathom a company as rich in resources and revenue like Apple would find it so complicated to work on multiple projects. They should be pumping out the best tablets parallel along side Powerful macs.
I'm sorry when did Apple confirm this rumor?

Damn....was really hoping to replace my Air 2 I've had since launch with the new *rumored* 10+ inch model when it came out...oh well, it's still plenty fast to hold me other another few months.
I'm like you, except iPad Air 1 here.. still OK I guess but will probably be unusable on iOS 11 (aka Apple's evil plan of forcing hardware upgrades)

I guess I'll have to wait a little while longer to update my first gen. iPad mini. Hopefully the wait is worth it. Real Racing 3 is sometimes is pretty laggy lol

A 2 year upgrade cycle for the 12.9" iPad Pro... I guess they really are Macs in Apples view

This also means that we are unlikely to see a new Apple Pencil in Q1, as the 9.7" model looks to be more of an iPad Air 3.
You spelt iPad Air 4 wrong, there already is an iPad Air 3 which they decided to brand Pro so they can make a little more money on a feature that otherwise would have logically trickled down anyways.

I own an original iPad Pro from 1.5 years back, and it has no need of upgrade at this time. The iPads are generally just light-end, mobile computing which focus on browsing, mail, chatting, some video work, and composition. The OS doesn't allow it to go further at this time, the processors need to be a lot snappier to allow it to become something better.

In this case, the 2-year refresh cycle makes perfect sense. A 3-year refresh cycle would even be acceptable.

Their computers, desktops and laptops, on the other hand need speedy updates to the newest processors--even if smaller than a year. Those machines are generally used by people with higher-end needs (not just desires) to get done complex work faster and better. Desktops push boundaries of tech... Apple's tablets merely repackage their phone tech.

If the current 9.7" Pro didn't convince you to upgrade from a dinosaur like the iPad 2 - what is the next Pro going to add to finally make you pull the trigger?

They've done it before. Phone 5 --> iPhone 5C

But the 5C added truly innovative color plastic to create a boldly earth shattering design! Obviously a new model. ;)

What's wrong with the current one? I think it's better to type on than the new MBP keyboard.

The keys themselves are fine, but personally I have some issues. I think there needs to be more space between the top row of the keyboard and the iPad. I'd like keys for dictation on the keyboard and if they can work some sort of magic I'd like a way to move the cursor on the Smart Keyboard since the use of the two-finger drag is lost without using the software keyboard.

It's a good keyboard now, but it can be much better.

The whole "Pro" thing has gotten ridiculous. Just call them the iPad mini, iPad, and the iPad plus. There is nothing truly "pro" about it. The iPads have always had a dumb variety available. Selling old models like the iPad 2 as long as they did was ridiculous and would have been like selling the iPhone 3GS while the 5s was available. They are doing the same thing now with the Mini 2. Apple is all about simplicity, then keep it at 3 models and quit leaving old ones around for far too long.
The Mini 2 is the only iPad with 1GB of RAM that Apple currently sells .

We don't need new ipads until the software catches up with the power of the current models...which it is really not near doing
