Apple's iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models will feature a number of significant display, thermal, and battery improvements, according to new late-stage rumors.

According to the Weibo leaker known as "Instant Digital," the iPhone 17 Pro models will feature displays with higher brightness, making it more suitable for use in direct sunlight for prolonged periods. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have a typical maximum brightness of 1,000 nits, but can boost to a peak of 2,000 nits for a brief period when outdoors.

Moreover, the frame rate of intense games will be more stable thanks to the device's redesigned thermal architecture. Frame-drops and lag will occur much less frequently. Similarly, performance when shooting 4K video at 60 frames-per-second in warm outdoor conditions, such as under direct sunlight in the summer, will be improved.

The two devices are apparently set to become the longest-battery life iPhones to date, thanks to both increased capacity and improved efficiency across the device. Previous rumors suggested that the iPhone 17 Pro Max could have a battery over 5,000 mAh in capacity.

The entire iPhone 17 lineup is expected to be announced at Apple's "Awe dropping" event next week on Tuesday, September 9.

What needs to be addressed instead of peak brightness is heat dimming... I was in Dubai last year at over 100 degrees and not only I could barely hold my 16 pro max but the screen gets dims to almost total black when hot...
I hope the new aluminum will help with that.
More brightness is always welcome. I don't care if the battery lasts less...

So not having auto brightness on means still max brightness will be low, compare to pixel 10 it’s like double the brightness and better whites on display, I don’t want brighter in the sun as I never have auto brightness on, let us have a brighter max brightness

I was on the sun last yesterday and I couldn't charge my phone because for some reason it was "too hot" for that.

You don't even have to be in the sun.. Earlier this summer, on a 95F and extremely humid day, I was trail running and I needed to stop to check the maps (I took a wrong turn and was lost) and pulled my 16 Pro out my backpack, in the shade of a forest, and then screen was dimmed almost to the point of not being able to see it. The screen was off and in my backpack and I was in the shade the entire time...no idea why it was needed to be dimmed. It was borderline useless.

MacRumors should always link to the actual Weibo post.

Regarding brightness levels, that's not what the post says, if you translate it.

"The screen brightness can maintain high levels longer in summer sunlight."

While I do expect a brighter screen this year, the post does not say that, at least according to Google Translate.

I tried for a little while to use my phone to fly drones. A few times I could not see the phone enough to see anything at all. Had to move on to a dedicated remote that worked great. It had a fan in it.

I am not a fan of the 15 and 16 pros with the higher brightness in the sun being readable for about 3 minutes then it does its automatic screen darkening. I get that the phone gets hot and the battery is pushing but I'd like to be able to decide when I need the screen to darken even if it eats through the battery. Now, if there is a setting I have on that I'm too much of a numbskull to change, that's on me.

I should have read this before I posted my comment :/

The new cooling system is going to enable iPhone to achieve a lot more in the future. Like more advanced on device Apple Intelligence. Makes a lot of sense for me to upgrade eventually since I live on the tropical tropical side of the equator :D

the new cooling system if its good enough can make apple stand still on their SoC...place the same as last year and still see improvements without doing anything but that

How do you turn off auto brightness?

A long time ago, I had that option. But now with my 13 mini I don’t see that option anywhere.

It’s truly infuriating to have the brightness go up and down (a) nearly randomly, like the idiotic automatic windscreen wiper setting on a car, and (b) to a higher max than I might ever want to use.
