I need the 17 series to have MUCH brighter displays, the 16 is identical to the 15 and I compared them at home last year and in some cases the 16 was dimmer.

Pixel 10 pro hits 3300 nits peak, I need at least 3000 from the 17 Pro.
Why? Isn't that a point of diminishing returns? I mean in which situations do we need a phone to get that bright? I'm not starting a fight. I really don't know.

Pixel might have a better. screen... Huawei and Xiomi have better cameras and Samsungs fold, but still people prefer iPhones... iPhone has something the others don't. Status symbol.

In some countries, perhaps. It's not a status symbol in the US, and nearly anyone, at any income level can buy one. Prepaid carriers often have them for less than $200.

The special outdoor brightness ends up being a gimmick because either it will last for a few seconds before significantly dimming the display OR it will rapidly burn through your battery, then most likely overheat and dim anyways.
I will take the gimmick. I frequently attempt captures in bright sun and any improvements will be welcome.

Bigger battery is always welcome. Brighter display will also be beneficial. Currently with my 15 Pro Max, in bright outdoors, device warms up and I feel like the display could be brighter.

Should be a nice upgrade from 14 Pro Max - three years is longest I've owned one model. Never saw reason to upgrade to 15 or 16.
I upgraded from the 14 Pro to the 16 Pro, and the only two differences I noticed or appreciated were the action button (which I set to allow me to screenshot, add to clipboard, and delete, with a single button), and the new camera/photographic styles. Everything else, such as the slightly improved bezels, the slightly longer battery, and the lackluster Camera Control button, have not been noticeable or useful after the first few days of using the device.

Hopefully your jump from the 14 to the 17 gives you more overall than my upgrade did!

Guys, d'you think this will be the best iPhone ever?
We need to wait for the keynote and what the apple dudes will tell us.
Could be an exciting devices, they’re really proud of. Probably the best iPhone they’ve ever made until this point.

More is always better. Higher number = better

Yea but doesn't a higher nits max, increase heat (if you use it regularly), which in turn reduces battery life or makes the phone hotter? I guess what I'm asking (and I know it's a subjective question) - at what point does the max number of nits, become basically useless and counterproductive?

What's Apple's definition of "intense games"? Looking at the Arcade line-up, I don't even know what's their definition of games in general.

It's an option, not like it pushes 1k+ nits all the time for everyone. I guess people on FL beaches will accept that the battery life is reduced.

Status symbol???

I have a 14 Plus and in no way shape or form do i treat it as a status symbol. I actually use the 14 Plus as a (iPod Touch) now that i have a 9 Pro XL.

If you treat a phone like a status symbol....you have issues.

It’s a device without any active cooling and a relatively small design. There won’t be any magical solution for this problem over the upcoming years.
?? Why do you not believe that the heat transfer engineering may improve? Agreed no "magical solution" but things like the rumored vapor chamber cooling are likely to improve heat removal while chip improvements may reduce heat production.

Try actually using the both to turn the camera on and as an improvement in shutter release technique [for some captures]. I consider it to be not at all lackluster.

What needs to be addressed instead of peak brightness is heat dimming... I was in Dubai last year at over 100 degrees and not only I could barely hold my 16 pro max but the screen gets dims to almost total black when hot...
I hope the new aluminum will help with that.
More brightness is always welcome. I don't care if the battery lasts less...
Major issue when using an underwater case too!

Same as the years before. I didn’t wrote that where won’t be an change or improvement, but I wrote that there won’t be a magical solution to totally avoid downclocking with such a small device.

I am not a fan of the 15 and 16 pros with the higher brightness in the sun being readable for about 3 minutes then it does its automatic screen darkening. I get that the phone gets hot and the battery is pushing but I'd like to be able to decide when I need the screen to darken even if it eats through the battery. Now, if there is a setting I have on that I'm too much of a numbskull to change, that's on me.
right on!
