Apple should give you a no-questions-asked replacement. 1 dead pixel on an iPhone is pretty much guaranteed replacement.

I had 5 iPhones replaced due to dead pixels and the last replacement had a dead pixel and they wouldn't replace it! I mean it was after my phone kept putting itself in recovery mode and wouldn't let me restore it at all

I'm really not sure if its a dead pixel or a piece of dust, I'm leaning toward dead pixel. It doesn't really bother me, I can only see it if I look for it. Regardless, I will probably get it fixed. Either way, Apple should cover it if it's dust or a dead pixel, right?

@2jzgze

Congrats! the units they were replacing your phone with, was it the original boxed packaging? or the slim white box with just the phone in it? :)

Brand new black boxes with original sealed wrap. No slim white boxes here.

I'm pretty sure they will replace it, if not, go see another apple store genius

When you swapped yours with a new one in an original box, did you have to give them your old box with the cord, charger, etc or did you just swap the phones themselves?

I think they would have preferred the old box, but no you don't need it

My black 32gb preorder iPhone had a dead pixel on it that I noticed after my friend said his had a dead pixel. I took it back to the Apple store and found out that they didnt have any more 32gb black but instead only had 2 64gb black.

Unfortunately, both of those had dust under the screen but I decided to keep one of them since I didnt want to be without a phone.

Now I am still wondering if I should return the phone to get one with a perfect screen, although it will be annoying to go down again as the nearest Store is 2 hours away. The sad thing is all of these phones were perfect in terms of having any scratches on them.

Just called Apple about my screen and they agreed to send a new phone, have me send mine back out, but wanted to charge me 30 bucks for that service. He then said I could send my phone back and they would get it back to me in the mail for free. Right, like I want to be without my phone I just bought for >1 week. There really isn't a price difference for them, they pay the shipping both ways anyways... Don't know why I should pay to have a defective screen replaced 3 days after I received it.

Edit: Called back, talked to someone else (actually went through 3 people) and they said, "we will take care of you and sort this out within 24 hours." Fingers crossed...

Had to do this with my 4 over 2 years ago, just activated 5 today and noticed a small dead pixel only visible at certain angles on a lighter background. I have an appt with my local apple store on Sunday (earliest I could go in), from past experience...they will see the small dead pixel and give me a brand new phone.

Hmm, seems it's a common issue.
Aren't screen assemblies supposed to be assembled in clean rooms?

I understand dead pixels, there is a certain defect rate when making LCDs.
Dust in the display assembly is simply poor environmental control.

Thanks for the update. I hope they have some more ip5 by the time I get there for my appointment!

They have a replacement stock that they don't sell to the public. So you'll be fine. Unless everyone turns in their phones for Scuffgate tomorrow.

How do you know if they have a replacement stock? Just curious as I have an appt on Sunday

Well I have a replacement phone coming in tomorrow am via FedEx. Hoping that it is as good of condition as mine (flawless except for a pixel)...

Back when the 4 came out and the steel band wasn't coated (and bumpers scratched the heck out of it), I managed to get my scratched up phone replaced in an Apple store due to a tiny speck of dust under the glass of the front camera.

The Genius was really apologetic ... "it's a sealed unit it just shouldn't happen"

New phone.

Made an appointment at the Genius Bar, got it swapped out, and the replacement had a dead pixel and scuff in the same place as the first one. Had to make another appointment that I'm waiting for now, but the head genius said that he won't keep opening up iPhones to find one free of scuffs and dead pixels. He said that he couldn't see it until I pointed it out and that some people are just "pixel people".

I bought a Korean monitor for $300 with 5x as many pixels as the iPhone 5 and no dead ones (or scuffs for that matter). Shouldn't be that much to expect the same from a $750 phone. I guess I'll see how the next one is and just return it if it's more of the same and buy a new one when the next batch comes out if the full production units are better as said.

Try going to a different apple store

I had my appointment yesterday to replace my iPhone 5 due to two stuck pixels. I decided to bring along my ipad too, since I recently noticed some dust under the glass on it. The guy said he had to check with someone about what the threshold was for number of stuck pixels before replacement, but came back saying he would replace them both. Both had flawless screens and the new iPhone was flawless outside, unlike my original which had a few dings out of the box.

^^^^^

Pixel policy? I was informed it was zero pixel defects, that is why they replaced my 4 within a few days of me having it more than 2 days ago.

So most apple stores have iphones in stock they will replace if you come in with an issue? I am just worried when I go in on Sunday if they agree to exchange it but are out of stock.

They should have replacement stock. The one they gave me was brand new, but was in a plain white box and not a retail box. I think when he mentioned the threshold to me, he was probably talking more about the iPad since it only had two small specks of dust under the screen and I had bought it way back in March on launch day.

I am assuming the plain box is for them to tell the difference between a retail box they can sell and a replacement?

My appointment at apple is today, I can really only see the pixel on a white background at an angle, hopefully they just humor me if they can't see it and just replace it.

The replacement has a scuff with the paint missing on the side and I see a small pixel or dust issue on the same side, going back in real quick tomorrow.

I got it replaced but the manager said if it needs to be done again, call apple.

Sigh, I will never get a perfect phone. This one is flawless until a micro particle resembling a dead pixel on the bottom of the left side appeared with a flashlight to it and wouldn't come off. This was is not noticeable unless you are looking for it and even then you have to give it another look so your eyes focus properly. Maybe I am paranoid, I never saw any dead pixels on my 4 replacement 2 years ago. Then again, I never went with a flashlight to it lol.

Apple trying to get rid of old faulty returned phones for warranty replacements

So here is your answer for what is inside the small white box and how is it different to the original complete Iphone box.

When you go to apple for faulty item replacement under warranty. They call it parts replacement. And that means only the faulty part is replaced. Which in this case is Iphone 5. And they will only change iphone 5. I.e. they will not change any of the other items in box i.e. Charger, Hands free etc.

In my situation I found two dead pixels in my brand new 3 days old Iphone 5. As my Iphone was on contract I went to the network provider. They told me that Apple should be able to replace it as they havn't got any in stock.

I went to Apple store. The store manager tried to convince me that I should not go for parts exchange and told me to do an exchange with the new one with the netwrok provider once they get some stock. She did not explained me the original reason.

I asked them to show me the product. A guy from Apple tech support came in with just an Iphone sealed in a white box (but not the original iphone retial box).
He opened the WHITE box and we both got shocked to find that this unit is having a cosmatic damage on the edges. I refused to accept that. He opened another and same sort cosmatic damages.
I refused to accept any of them.
Now what apple trying to do is this:
If Some person Mr X buys a new Iphone 5. They notice some cosmatic damages. Since there is a 14 days return policy. If Mr X returns it back to apple and go for refund. Instead of disposing that (cosmatically damaged) returned Iphone hand set they try to exchange these units when you go for warranty.
Its totally unacceptable.
And really Apple should be exchanging them with brand new Iphone. As this what people have paid for. And this is what they deserve after paying the full price. If Apple is still intrested to get rid of their (cosmatically damaged) returned IPhones stock. They should sell them on low prices explaining the fault.
