No the most wasteful, idiotic and backwards thing to do would be to consider your comments of any authority on the matter.

Having the glass on the side could easily supplement space that would otherwise not be used (i.e.: to close to the edge for human fingers to comfortably operate). One edge could represent power level, the other volume level just to name a few uses of the side curve. It would most certainly be more comfortable to hold as well opposed to sharp edges.

My comment was about them distorting actual displayed content it has nothing to do with them possibly only using that space for power/vol meters. If it actually isn't for something like that and we have to deal with having the edges of photos and videos curved then yes it will be a huge step backwards.

It was an R&D mockup of what can be done with the flexible displays (not that doesn't mean the device is flexible, just the display which is encased and kept in a static position) Samsung (and many others) are developing.

In engineering, a mockup is a non-working model. As vomhorizon said, you'd usually refer to the working device as a prototype, even if it's not of a planned product. (E.g. Apple no doubt had working prototype iPhones that never came out.)

You can see the Samsung wraparound demo around 1:30 here:

Curving photos and videos on it seems really unlikely, don't you agree?

As shown above, it'd be more likely used for notifications, virtual volume controls, etc.

That particular device was never intended to be an actual product (though given the way Samsung throws so much at the wall, it may become one).

A prototype will be a better term to describe this product. A mockup is something that is non-working only intended to show what a form factor looks like, sort of like a dummy phone.. A prototype on the other hand is an experimental product that actually works but isnt mass produced therefore a one of a kind product made in the lab rather than a factory..

Edit: Kdarling beat me to it..

I had to register just so I could rant on this stupidity. Why would I want to have an iPhone that looks like a gen1 and the curved glass is a joke. What function would curved glass serve? So people really think Apple is going to add a monumental hardship to the manufacturing process just for a cool factor? Why does anyone really care what the edges look like. Anyone who rocks a naked iPhone is looking for trouble. 99.9999% of people I have seen with the iPhone have at least a bumper case on their precious. this whole "curved" thing? In an industry that holds thousandths of a millimeter as sacred, why would we want curves? You can't fill a curve with parts. It's wasted space. What I want is a screen that is edge to edge in the current (5, 5S) form but waterproof and a battery that lasts 24 hours no matter what.

You really believe that the 5C was designed for third world countries? Lets not be naive here, the 5C was created so Apple could have higher margins on a lower cost phone.

Apple makes more per unit on the 5S... so your point is in error. And having traveled to many third world/poorer countries... I feel comfortable saying that a $100 price difference, while not making much difference to you, makes a big difference to many people. Average income in india is $500-800. Not per paycheck, not per month. Per YEAR. Tell me $100 don't matter. And you say I'm naive.

This could be a really nice 'comfortable' design, but it is ruined by the distorted top/bottom. If Apple made this they would keep it uniform.

He meant that the 5C had higher margins than if Apple had sold the iPhone 5 as the second level phone.

You're changing my point. They make a better margin on the 5c than they did would have selling the 5 at the same price point, which they would have done had they not released the 5c. I never $100 doesn't make a difference, I said that Apple didn't release it specifically for third world countries, but rather released it so they could have a NEW phone (rather than year-old phone) at the desired price point with HIGHER margins than if they offered the iPhone 5 in that slot.

Quit putting words in my mouth, you don't know how much money I make and its unwise to assume.

I'll have to disagree with you on that one. We really don't know what is going on in Apple, but we do know that sapphire has come down in price. $50-60 on this kickstarted can get you a sapphire screen protector. If a small group can do it, then what is stopping Apple?

Oh wow, didn't see that coming. However, that is still $60+ dollars in production costs, which converts to $100+ rise, as they would want profit. So I would say it could happen, but not iPhone 6, I would, however, LOVE TO SEE IT HAPPEN!

Yes, it will be nice if apple finally hits that design mark as nearly every other new phone for the past year and half or longer has done.

Um......WHAT?!
The iPhone has the one of the biggest bezels of any high end:
screen-infographic.png

So where are you getting this from? As you can see from this, the iPhone 5S has more bezel than the Galaxy S2...which launched in 2011.

Gross.
Although the design of the iPad Mini Retina shrunk down to the size of a 4.7" iPhone would be nice. :D

Wait, I'm confused. Is there anyone that doesn't understand flexible/curved is how we get MORE screen on a SMALLER device? We've only been waiting for a device to hit the market with one for about 5 years!

doubtful the edges of the glass would probably be the color of the phone just a design feature at this point but if some correctly could be beautiful

shouldn't have a bearing on performance other than giving a rounded edge instead of a squared off one maybe make swiping transitions easier

And to promote this thing Apple can borrow a phrase from Samsung ad: "The next big thing is here". Samsung probably means it figuratively (at least in part) but Apple clearly can own the literal meaning ;)

I keep hearing people say this, but if that screen technology was available to incorporate Finger print id you don't think apple would have done it already?

Touch screens do not have the sensitive capability to read finger prints, at least not yet, and probably not for quite some time to come.

The technology may exist, but it is not ready for prime time yet. Apple is known for waiting until the time is right before it builds new features into its products. So I do believe that Apple is working on a touch screen that is sensitive enough to act as a fingerprint sensor, but it will take just a little bit more time before it is released.

New iPhone 6 Renderings Highlight Curved Display, Rounded Corners

Yuck! Please don't take away the elegant box design. All I want is a bigger 5S with 4K video recording.
