As a matter of fact, it's the 802.11g/Bluetooth combo chip that also has an FM tuner (and possibly a transmitter) built-in.

However, there has been no evidence to date to suggest that the necessary internal antenna connections have been made in the iPhone which would be needed to allow that hardware to actually work.

They actually went with the BCM4325 which only has a FM receiver on it. It was rumor before hand that they would put the 4329 in it. As lines in code referenced it.

Hiya guys, I know this thread is old but I thought I'd chime in with my 2 cents.
I had a Nokia n900 before my iPhone and it did exactly what the OP is on about without the need for external hardware. There was even an app that found empty radio space so you didn't get any hissing etc.
That was about 5 years ago now, so it's not that unbelievable to think that it could be integrated onto the iPhone considering how fast technology is moving at the mo and that it has already been done.

That's because the hardware was internal....Which doesn't exist in iPhones.

Ah, ok. That's me told! hehe
I would of thought that seeing as it can play the radio that there would be some sort of FM frequency in there that they could tweak a bit.
I am stabbing in the dark tho, I have no knowledge on the subject of FM frequencies at all. It was only because I was looking for the FM transmitter app that I came across this thread. The exclamation points did get my hopes up a bit, but meh, watcha gonna do. ;)

The thread is also 4 years old, but yes, transmitting an FM frequency requires hardware, not software.
