So what does AT&T/Verizon/Sprint pay for an iPhone? Do they pay the same amount as a regular customer?

I ask since there are many articles out there that state that the carriers suffer more if they sell more iPhones (due to higher subsidies). Many of those articles cite an iPhone subsidy at $450 ($650 - $200).

I just wonder how one would calculate a subsidy on a flagship Android phone.

I don't have any sources atm, but I've read that most carriers pay pretty close to retail for the phones. Something like $25 off MSRP.

Hmm, I thought the Galaxy Note was in that $800 range unlocked... people will still buy it =)

MUST we have to go through this for every launch? Weren't people saying the iPad 3 was going to get jacked up in price just a few months ago? And didn't we find out how completely wrong that was?

In this competitive environment, no company is stupid enough to raise their prices.

I get asked this a lot at work;

Its always been £499, £599, £699.

This year it will be £499, £599, £699.

Just because something has "always" been a certain price, doesn't mean that it can never change. Gas used to "always" be 99 cents per gallon too.

Why?

An 800 iPhone has either got to be a larger capacity iPhone or one that can transform into an iPad or something.

There is nothing they can put into the iPhone (other than larger capacity) that could possibly make it worth 800$.

And even if there was, Apple would never jam-pack everything into one device. An 800 iPhone (not counting capacity) would have to have like an A6 hexa-core processor, 4GB RAM, LTE+ (whatever the next step after LTE is), and a battery life that will last until the next iPhone comes out.

Ok that's all hyperbole but still :p

I pay around £500 on pay as you go in the Uk which is approx the same as $800 you quote, so no shock for me there.

iphone 5.... $800?

dont flame me but im not up to date with this stuff but obviously people talk and are saying its gonna be $800 with a new contract.

where did this rumor start? cant possibly be true obviously.

For a new unlocked iPhone with 32Gb or higher, $800 isn't higher than normal if you don't have a service contract. All new versions of smart phones are very expensive without a contract. I would imagine the low end version will cost around $200 for an iPhone 5 with a new contract.

that's insane. Apple will lose so much business if they did that. A phone that costs as much, if not more, than a computer? phones are already too expensive as it is. :(

The unlocked top end iPhone already costs that much. The $199 you pay at the store is a carrier subsidized price.

The next iPhone will be $199-$299 on contract for sure.
