Wow, did you really just edit my quoted reply to set up your little gotcha post?

Part of my reply (which you deleted) provided context to my maths:

“the battery is not a whole lot upwards of half the size”.

In your example, one phone’s battery isn’t nearly twice the size of the other.

Nice job altering the quote without even the courtesy of a “snip” and deleting relevant context 🙄 There’s nothing I like more than having someone attempt to weaponize my words pulled out of context.
You're right. I did. Apologies. But I didn't do it weaponize your comment. I only actually paid attention to the portion about bigger, bigger, longer. ←phrasing or are we not doing phrasing anymore- I basically ignored the rest because it had nothing really to do with my response to your earlier comment. I was disagreeing with your opinion that the run times were almost as good (they aren't imo) as the 11. Your reply to that was suggesting that if someone needed the longer run time they should get the 11... not sure what that had to do with the original opinion so I ignored it. Regardless, in parsing your quote I missed the intent. Again, apologies.

No worries. I’ve had a bad morning, a few hours ago I learned my cousin died (not COVID-19, an aneurysm they think). It hasn’t really hit me and I’ve been trying to distract myself. Going ballistic on you was a welcome diversion and easier than dealing with my feelings. My apologies to you as well.

Looks like nothing more than an updated iPhone 8. Apple could probably sell these for $199 and still make a profit. I'll hang on to my old SE.

It's all good. Sorry for your loss.

I'll add my little anecdote. I pulled out/charged my old black 5 last night just to reminisce. I'm 6'3" with pretty big hands, and I have to say that I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, at this point.

I currently use the XS, and while the deep blacks and almost-full-screen are really nice to view, I wouldn't mind going back to a smaller phone (SE1 or 2) for just the reasons everyone else has said (easier one-handed use, form factor). Even if the upcoming 5.4" iPhone 12 doesn't have squared-off edges, I'm now fully on-board to going back to a smaller form factor and would absolutely get that one over the 6.1" Pro.

Maybe we'll get lucky and the non-Pro will be squared-off as well, but even if it isn't, the size makes the style of the edges a non-issue (imo).

This was the issue I had when deciding on whether to buy or not.

I currently have the old SE, and the battery life is shocking, so the one thing I want from a new phone is better battery life than that.

Apple says "lasts about the same as an iPhone 8" - well, what's that supposed to mean? I don't have an iPhone 8, so it's a meaningless statement. It would be helpful to know how long the battery lasts in the new phone, not how it compares to some arbitrary predecessor.

In the end I purchased anyway because I'm never going to be able to afford any other iPhone, so it's this one or nothing. But it would have been helpful to have a battery life information that's actually meaningful.
If true, then I would say honesty is a good selling point.

They could, but if people buy it at $399 then that is a smart business model. Can you blame them?

That would be $1 per phone. Not enough for R&D, salaries and stuff.

Wow, that's dedication! Which color 5c did you have? (my favorite iPhone!)

White. Still does everything I need it to do, had to change batteries once.

You definitely got your money's worth.

I just saw the price for the base iPhone SE in New Zealand which is $NZ799, when it is only $US399. That puts the exchange rate around $NZ2 to $1US to buy this iPhone. The real exchange rate is currently $NZ1.66 to $US1. Our NZ dollar doesn't fluctuate that much and this is continued price gouging on Apple products in New Zealand. Love Apple products - hate the price disparity.

I ordered mine the moment it went up (no biggie, I'm up at that time anyway), and my confirmation email says "Delivers April 24". Is that the same as "Ships 4/24"? Does "Delivers" means the delivery process starts, or to expect it to arrive on that day, I wonder.
My confirmation email says "Deliver by 4/24." My fingers are crossed.

This topic seems to popup anytime a new product rolls out. And does not apply solely to NZ...

US price does not include taxes, NZ does.

So base USD price works out to 661 NZD before GST added (15%), which gets you to 760 NZD.

Bought one myself this morning, 432 USD after sales tax (8.375%), which is 716 NZD. You have areas of the US where sales tax is quite a bit more, 9.5-11% (about 733 NZD for highest tax districts), after local taxes added to state rates. But some places have zero sales tax, hence people wanting to go to those areas to get their new devices.

Add in probably more consumer-friendly warranty processing costs to account for in NZ, and not having to yoyo price with every change in $ conversion, Apple set the the price where it is. And that basically boils down to a 24 USD difference.

I’m surprised the base is 600 Canadian- I’ve got no interest in this phone but 256 is 809.00
That’s a big difference - larger than I see with other products

As an example (like 99% if things) the new keyboard+trackpad for the iPad Pro 12.9 is 349 American and 449 Canadian. Quite the difference but more what I’d expect

Ordered black 64. Was hoping for the original design with edge-to-edge display, but tired of waiting. Will miss the 11 though, but not the size.

What makes you so sure?

Devil's Advocate for poster "JosephAW", this is a Rumour site ;)

SE has always been Apple's answer for a budget small form factor iPhone. When it introduced iPhone 6 with a 4.7" and 5.5" screen the 4" screen on the 5S was deemed small. Since Apple has moved to 5.8", 6.1" and 6.5" screens the 4.7" is now the new small.

Like others I like the physical dimensions of the old (2016) SE, but would have preferred an edge-to-edge screen. I suspect the present notch size may've had something to do with it. This seems to change if the rumours are any indication. I personally prefer a phone that fits in my pocket with the best cameras that Apple has to offer, if that is the 6.1" screen or 5.4" screen.

Like the specs and price, of the nSE, never been a fan of the design. If Apple had kept the square design in a 4.7" screen size it would be perfect but that would ruin the surprise for a redesign on the iPhone 11 and Pro's for 2020.

If I didn't already have an iPhone 8 as my backup phone, I would be all over this. An iPhone 8 with the same processor as their flagship phone? And at a vastly reduced price? Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

And if this iPhone 8 SE + is going to be a real thing, I will definitely get one.

Apple re-released the SE ?

I always liked the small size.

Edit: This seems to be a re-release of the iPhone 8 ?

It's because the original SE was a success and iPhone 8 is not in anyway related as it is not being the same form factor.

It's not a true SE successor in any way.

It depends, price wise it’s the most affordable brand new iPhone you can get today with an A13 chip, 3GB RAM, 64GB base storage, stereo speakers, etc. The physical dimensions is larger in comparison to the 2016 SE, but it would be odd if Apple stuck with the same design since iPhone 4 (it’s been a decade) and then release the 2020 iPhone with similar design language. It would seem either a step back or the 2020 SE was first to adopt this revised look.

Plus it would be strange to have a 2020 SE with a 4” screen, an iPhone 12/ Pro with a 5.4”, 6.1” and 6.7” screen.

Hopefully once everything catches up and Apple move TouchID from the front bezel and to the power button the design language stays the same there will be no SE and just three screen sizes with a 0.6-0.7” upsize difference and FaceID can either be shrunken more or optional.

1) You’re forgetting about your GST, NZD104 for the $799 SE. Subtract that out and you’re paying USD421, so USD22 more.

2) Your dollar does fluctuate that much, at least lately (against the US dollar). A month ago, the exchange rate was 1.78, which would have made the price US390, $9 less than what we pay here in the States.

So at $421, Apple’s hedging against the weakening of your dollar by 5.5%. (It was down 8% a month ago.)

The keyboard is selling at about a USD30 discount over what we pay here in the US. The SE is about USD27 more expensive 🤷‍♂️

Buy both and you’re saving USD3 from what you’d pay here 🙂
