Ordered mine today, black, 256 GB, 18W charger. My first iPhone, actually. Never cared much for smartphones, but my "feature" phone is now beyond repair, so I have to bite the bullet. The crazy thing is: as with Macs I would be willing to buy the top model, pay €2,000 for a great Apple smartphone, if those things were actually real computers, but you have no control, you don't have complete access, no privileges, not even temporary, it's a dumbed-down-prison version of a computer. No way I'm giving Apple that much money for something I can barely use (like real computer usage). So the SE is actually a good thing, mainly because of the price, but also for the Apple Watch that I'll probably buy down the road—that's a product I'm really interested in. As for smartphones, I'll closely watch the development of Purism's Librem 5. That might actually become my daily driver, because that's a real computer for a change.

That's not really a good counter argument though. Within the context of smartphone battery life, 4 hours of additional playback and 2 hours of additional streaming are huge differences in run time. To say that the run times are almost as good is just not true when judged from the perspective of smartphone usage.

People naturally assumed, considering all the similarities to the 8, with a new more efficient processor the battery life would be better. No one was expecting Apple to nebulously state "Lasts about the same as iPhone 8". That's not a ringing endorsement since the 8 wasn't generally known for great battery life.

Is it a legit criticism? Idk, everybody's got different opinions. Battery life isn't a static statistic. Use cases are going to determine how good or bad the battery life is for the new SE. From a purely marketing perspective, "Lasts about the same as iPhone 8" isn't the best bullet point.
Anyone who needs 17 vs 13 hours of video playback, or 10 vs 8 hours of video streaming, should probably buy the iPhone 11. The $400 SE might not be the best choice, because the battery is not a whole lot upwards of half the size.

Bigger phone, larger battery, longer run time. Maths and all.

I don't understand the objection. You make a philosophical point (free software etc), but then you say that there is an acceptable price to pay. If you buy the SE, even for $1, you already accept the premise that proprietary software is acceptable.

I wasn't talking about free vs. proprietary software. I was talking about having a real computer in my hand that I have full control over. For that I'd be willing to pay a lot, and whether it's running free or proprietary software doesn't really matter. I use Macs with loads of proprietary stuff, but I still have control over those machines. You don't get that with big tech smartphones, so I'm only willing to buy the entry model. I mean, I do need a phone, too, so it had to happen at some point. And that point was today.

To do what exactly?

You can have this today (e.g. an Android with alternative firmware). Personally I have a Pixel with GrapheneOS, and it is an interesting gadget to play with. But be aware that you'll have to live with a severely limited selection of apps. You'll probably discover soon that this is far more important for a daily driver phone than "complete access".

E.g. to install and run any software I want, including root processes, run shell scripts etc. pp.

As for hacked Android: I looked into it, and it wasn't convincing, and some of my friends strongly argued against it. So it's either Apple or a Linux phone. (Or both.)

An Android (AOSP) phone is a Linux phone. With the right firmware you can do whatever you want with it, including the things you mention.

Y'all who are ordering, are you going to disinfect your new iPhone when you unbox it? 😷

Just like you’d disinfect anything coming from the USA, right? Since the US has the most cases these days, items coming from the US must be crawling with coronavirus?

I don't think it is such a big upgrade from the 7, I am happy with my 7, the only bad thing is the battery life.

If my uncle sells me his iPhone 11 pro next year for $500 then I will get it immediately otherwise I will just save money for the iPhone 2022 which I would buy in 2023.
Damn, pre-planning to keep your iPhone 7 for 7 years is about as frugal as it gets!

iPhone 11 - bigger phone 6.1", bigger battery 3110 mAh, run time 17hrs video playback, 10hrs video stream.
iPhone 11 Pro - smaller phone 5.8", smaller battery 3046 mAh, run time 18hrs video playback, 11hrs video stream.
Maths and all notwithstanding.

This looks like a great little phone, since I may be upgrading from my 6s in a few months.

One thing bugs me, though. What's the point in the different color choices (across the entire iPhone lineup) if the front face now is always black? Since I (and I presume most others) put their phone in some sort of a case, you might as well just purchase the black color option anyway.

Just a thought from someone who's always enjoyed the sleek look of Apple's silver/white color options.

Of course, my current 8+ is freaking out hard, so I pre-ordered an SE 128gb Red with Project Red case. I am hoping it has a Qualcomm chip, but if not, I'll have to deal as the 8+ is just saying screw this.

The Covid-19 donations are a bonus.

I'll have to talk to Verizon about removing the activation fee since they recently saw a big chunk of change from me with a cellular iPad Pro and an unlimited line for that.

Now I need a Mac. < Thankfully, I can write off the phone and the iPad Pro as business expenses on my 2020 taxes. Not sure about the useless Lenovo Yoga. >

I find it strange that the white iPhone SE 2020 has a black front when the white iPhone 7 had a white front. They ran out of parts?

My new white iPhone SE 128GB is going to replace my old 16GB iPhone 4.

In fact, this is my first-ever iPhone purchase since both my 3GS and 4 were given to me. The only other iOS purchase I ever made was the first iPod touch.

When I first started reading Apple's site, I did naively think that the colours would mean "all black", "all white", and "all red" with the front bezels matching the back. I get that, for economy of price, they've just gone for the same front on them all, but it is at least a little disappointing stylistically.

I used a transparent case on my original SE, otherwise I'd be hiding the only bit that was gold colour. I'll no doubt get a transparent one for the new SE, too, so I don't hide the red.

Some cases are clear, so there's that. Also on many cases there are openings where the back color is visible, like around the camera, say, or on the sides.

The case I'll be using is covered in a real baseball covering, with stitches and all. Here and there the phone's color will peek through, so I ordered the red, to match the stitching. #firstworldproblem

Wow, did you really just edit my quoted reply to set up your little gotcha post?

Part of my reply (which you deleted) provided context to my maths:

“the battery is not a whole lot upwards of half the size”.

In your example, one phone’s battery isn’t nearly twice the size of the other.

Nice job altering the quote without even the courtesy of a “snip” and deleting relevant context 🙄 There’s nothing I like more than having someone attempt to weaponize my words pulled out of context.

Just ordered a Black 256. First new phone since 2015. Says ships 4/24.
I ordered mine the moment it went up (no biggie, I'm up at that time anyway), and my confirmation email says "Delivers April 24". Is that the same as "Ships 4/24"? Does "Delivers" means the delivery process starts, or to expect it to arrive on that day, I wonder.
