I keep going back and forth. When I initially saw it I liked it... Then I started hating it.... Now as I read through that article... I'm starting to see the benefit again. It would especially help with those apps that have several menu bars, and ads, and then the content ends up smashed in the middle of the screen. If apple went to 4" and kept the same resolution, it would add zero screen space, so what's the point? It would help people with poor vision by adding larger buttons and larger print... video's wouldn't be much larger because they would still be restricted by the aspect ratio. It would kind of feel like a cop out to make a larger screen "just because" or to fit a larger battery.

can someone post mockups of how content would look in landscape?

Been trying to find some but can't seem to see any!

yeah, I think landscape mode would be weird in a lot of the apps. Things like twitter. Also the keyboard would be very stretched; I would like to see that.

I would like to see the option for devs to keep landscape aspect ratio the same as it is now, move the screen all the way to the right, and then on the left add some sort of panel/widget/etc. I could see that being benefitial for some apps.

Honestly, I never use landscape anyway. I have my screen locked in portrait. I change it every once in a while to look at a picture or something.

I'm not against a bigger screen OR a larger phone. I'm against fragmentation, and the fact that a change in aspect ratio and resolution to something that is in 0 iOS devices to date means that none of the apps in the app store are going to be properly designed to the phone.

Yeah... and devs will certainly need more than the (typical) 2 week lead time from when the iPhone is announced till launched. So it'd like for Apple to announce at WWDC with iOS 6 if the future aspect ratio will change. Most of the apps will be simple enough, the main issue will be with games, or things like GPS apps.

I guess nobody here remembers how these larger screen rumors were running rampant last year. Everyone read it time and time again on so many rumor sites it just HAD to be true.

Then the iPhone 4S got released :p

Not a chance in hell I'd believe the larger screen rumors this year after getting my hopes up last year.

If they do go with a 16:9 iPhone, I hope they never touch the iPads 4:3 design. I'd be fine with it on my phone, but I love the iPads ratio compared to the Android tablets. Much rather use it in portrait than landscape.

Yup I totally agree. I think the iPhone would work so narrow, but the iPad is good as is. videos are sometimes kind of annoying... but not a deal breaker.

There will be no fragmentation. Apps will be updated. The apps that run in the former resolution can just have black bars on the side until they update their apps. No big deal.

Well it is a bigger deal than you are making it out to be. Not saying they shouldn't do it... but it is fragmentation.

Not only will all former apps need to be redesigned, but all new apps will need to be designed to work not only with the current two resolutions, but now also two aspect ratios. I would imagine for games that would be annoying.

Does this mean current iPhone 4 users won't be able to update to iOS 6?

no

I'm thoroughly against this idea. I think it'll be too tall in portrait and too short in landscape, and then there's the fact that you're breaking perfect compatibility with over 600,000 apps. Better to go to 1440x960 and increase the size of the smartphone diagonally.

+1

I'm not a big fan of the taller screen. Don't think it's a good idea for a phone. Would much rather have the new iPhone taller (actual phone and not just screen) and slightly stretched out wider.

No, they will have different builds available for both the 4, 4s and whatever the new iPhone is.

Same way they do with the ipod, ipad, and iPhone. It all gets released at the same time and your iDevice will pick up whichever version it needs to.

Perfect size ;) As long as its still using the same form factor. Really dislike the wider cell phones out there. Easy to hold and use with one hand. I'll take a 3.5 / 3.7 / or even a 4 incher with the same form factor as well.

You must be great at adapting to change.
I'm not upset about it changing. I'm upset at the number of apps that would have to update to match the new ratio and resolution. All of them. It's going to take forever, and that does bother me a bit. What's the point of having a 4" screen if all your apps only fit a 3.5" screen? I know that eventually, they would update but this kind of fragmentation is bad for developers, and therefore the consumer of apps.

Agreed. If they change the aspect ratio, I want developers to know of it way ahead of time.

People who are against a design like this and/or an aspect ratio change must love watching VCR movies on their 25 inch tube TVs and playing Oregon trail on their 15 inch CRT monitors.

No.

EDIT: Several people beat me to the punch. :S

Not exactly. People like myself were hoping that the iPhone would keep its 5:4 aspect ratio as it is a sweet spot for me as is the 4:3 on the iPad. But its too soon to judge.

So is this any indication of a touch sensitive home button? Or maybe hybrid?

Cause a longer screen might make it to small for some to push easily. A hybrid would be nice with home button settings toggles... off/on for "Push" and "Touch"

The difference last year (at least we can hope so) is that it was a mid-cycle phone and wasn't to be a complete re-design. This year it is. If Apple doesn't throw in a 4"+ screen at this late date, what the hell else have they got to sell us and what would be the point of yet another redesign that keeps the small 3.5" screen?

With all the other great 4"+ phones out on the market, why would you get another 3.5" phone from Apple? Especially when you could just keep your 4 or 4S. Yes, I know the faithful will buy it even if it's a turd with an apple logo on it (look at the 4S sales with Siri... oooo), but Apple is going to have to compete with these other phones whether they like it or not. 3.5", these days, is an embarrassment.
