Is the scrolling smoother now?

I was playing w/ a 160GB demo yesterday and was really put off by the unpredictable and inaccurate scrolling, especially in the menu section. If I tried to scroll to the next option it would skip two options ahead. Also the scrolling in the artist, etc sections was a noticable and annoyingly lagly, unlike the smoothness of previous generations. It was a total turn off to me so I decided to postpone buying. Has this firmware fixed these issues? I could care less about coverflow. It's great on a big screen like iTunes, or iPhone/Touch, but entirely useless on 2.5" screen.

Had my classic last week (black).

Loving the new UI and aluminum design, but I too have the "P" present when I sync in iTunes.. present BEFORE and AFTER the 1.01 update :(

Does seem a bit quicker, so not too bothered.

for people talking about the unresponsiveness of the classic -

i has read/watched a review of the classic and said if it's acting slow to navigate through as many menus possible and hang out in cover flow for a while. doing so will force the iPod to start caching the album art so it doesn't need to constantly load it during the floating pictures on the menus.

I have an 80gb classic and I keep having iTunes issues. Everytime I plug my iPod in to charge/sync I get the beachball for a few minutes. The same thing happens when I eject. It is just taking an unusually long time to mount and eject, much longer than my 5G.

I am running the latest version of iTunes on a iMac 2ghz Core 2 Duo with 2gb of RAM.

Anyone else noticing how long it takes for iTunes to react to the iPod?

I havn't used an iPod in years, last one was a Mini so I was unsure if this was how they are now. After getting this update last night my classic is so much more responsive and easier to use!!

Are the menus just as fast as they were on the mini? I'm coming from a 3rd gen iPod, and I need to upgrade to something bigger then 10 gigs, but I don't wanna upgrade to 160gigs if the UI is going to be as sluggish as the 5G iPods were..

I read some where the "P" issue when syncing is due to the clock being abled in the menu bar. If you turn it off you'll have "iPod" instead of the "P". Not a fix I know and hopefully Apple will iron out all the bugs with another update because I'm not resetting my iPod with almost 30GB of music and videos on it.

I have the exact same config except a Core Duo (not Core 2) iMac - I get exactly the same thing.

I guess this is what we get for being early adopters...

I've just upgraded from a 20 gig 3G iPod, and some things are slower whilst others are faster. For example, when in Now Playing you can literally keep hitting next as fast as you possibly can and it'll keep throwing up new tunes and play them very quickly, as opposed to the 3G which would go 5 tunes, stop, think, do another 5, stop, think, etc...

I'm happy with my purchase, it was a much needed upgrade - and I know that in time all of these bugs will get ironed out!

I have the 160Gb and it does the same when connected to my MacBook. The beachball appears intermittently even when the ipod is not actually syncing. Locks up the computer for about 30s each time. Hopefully they can fix this as its very annoying.

EDIT: Still happens on 1.01 firmware.

I finally got my second iPod (and the third, I got a Shuffle now too), I have been using the 5GB 1G iPod since 2001 now :)

Before this update I had the problem that some wide-screen movies displayed white borders on top and bottom instead the usual black ones. This seems to be fixed now.

I don't really notice any speed differences in the menu / coverflow.

I'm having some problems with my 8 gb Nano.

Takes aaaages to eject (beachball for ~30 seconds)
Displays 'P' in the title bar whilst connected to my MBP
CoverFlow arranges by Artist, and not Artist by Album (as it should, I have the same album 40 times over because it's a compilation)
*Occasionally* it locks up for a few seconds after the song has been playing for ~8 seconds, then continues fine as if nothing has happened. I rip all my music at 256 kbps, so it may well be that it has issues loading the information into the cache quick enough or something
CoverFlow can be a *tad* choppy at times...

Just updated my 3G (8GB) Nano, and the only 'bug' that I'd noticed before is still there... Enhanced podcast artwork doesn't change with chapters...

Other problem maybe ?

Is anyone else's Classic having trouble syncing up to iTunes ? I notice when I connect it that it takes forever and sometimes I have to click on EJECT just to get a response.

downloaded the update and did a restore. The iPod does feel more responsive and the clickwheel works better but when I tried to use the iSkin cover for my Gen 5 iPod, it won't recognize the finger movements at all. I hope iSkin creates a good iPod skin for the classic.:)

Oh dear, am I the only one getting an error after the update has finished downloading?

It reads:

There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "iPod". And unknown error occurred (-48).

Make sure your network settings are active, etc. etc.

Presumably my network settings are fine otherwise the thing wouldn't have downloaded at all.

So, anyone familiar with a "-48"?

It's a 80GB Classic, a 1.83GHz Core Duo Macbook and iTunes 7.4.2 btw.

iPod Update Fails to Install

I have the same problem as Bogey...I get a message with an error number (1462) when trying to update an 80GB Classic on a MacBook Pro (2.16GHz). This appears after the Extracting Software progress bar gets to the end.

That didn't last long. It is back to white now

First post

So I just got my black nano G3 8gb yesterday, and an update today? whoopie!

Anyway, this is what I have problems with:

  • Cover Flow is by ARTIST... I have many multi-artist compilations and this creates a ton of clutter
  • Locks up a lot on the main/music menu
  • I get the "P" while connected issue
  • No ability to remove the "podcasts" link from the main menu, as i dont listen to any podcasts...
I can't really think of anything else right now...

Other than these issues i am very happy with my first apple purchase :D

I suffered through the same problem with my iPod Classic and wasted a lot of time because of the iPods ponderously slow processing.

After installing the iTunes 7.4.2 update, the problem of the iPod ejecting before the 1.01 update can be applied is solved - iTunes wil now automatically mount or reconnect the iPod after the 1.01 update has been downloaded and extracted.
