Actually Blue Velvet is a girl, and no, I wouldn't go so far as to say you jumped all over her when she gave her opinion. :D

Actually, I was referring to toughboy, as the person who was being 'jumped on' for giving his opinion.

Exactly, it's just Blue Velvet's opinion - I'm glad you now see that there was no need for you to even comment on it.

Now that's ironic...........

You, telling me, not to comment on someone else's opinion.

Now I know, but in the future, take some of your own advice, and 'keep it movin'.

The phrase "one more thing" is gold for Apple - and they know it. To have an announcement with only this phrase has raised a lot of hype and speculation and I believe Apple is going to want it to be worth it. What I would really like to see is Steve J going on stage and brushing off the rumors first:

(snip)

Steve J knows that Wall Street is watching this announcement as much as Apple die hard fans and he is going to want to get both excited. He's also going to want to come out with something that will have us reaching for our credit cards. Since I have iPods for every one in the family and our Macs are only just over a year old I look for something that I am going to want to buy.

My guess? Like the original iPod or iSight it will be something very new and different. My credit card is ready - just in case.

Exactly.

Apple play this game so well now. They know people are ranting and raving about this. I hope it is something different than what everyone's expecting. I can't wait to see what happens.

Glad you found the humor in my reply - it was all intentional. Thanks for being a good sport, I can be a bastard at times... :D

'I can dig it!'

And I appreciate it - some people can get so uptight and defensive on these Forums at times - I find it quite hilarious myself. ;)

Alrighty, moving on, back on topic - sounds like these new iPods will indeed be announced, but only with larger capacities, nothing major. Nonetheless, larger capacities will lend themselves quite nicely to the video iPods once they are announced, so you can look at this as a stepping stone of sorts. It's inevitable.

That's completely untrue. Music and video decoding in these devices isn't done by a general-purpose CPU, it's done by specialized hardware chips. PortalPlayer already has such controllers that will do video, and I believe the recent color iPods actually use 1 such chip. The technical requirements are quite low.
The first sentence isn't really backed up by the second. I didn't anywhere mention a "general purpose CPU".

The fact, undenyably, is that MPEG4 decoding requires much, much, much, faster, more complicated, more power-sucking, hardware than AAC decoding. It's doing more. Right now, a highly optimized dedicated chip is used on iPods to decode audio. So we're talking about, at best, a straight replacement of hardware of complexity X with hardware of complexity many X.

Maybe they'll be updating all their hard drive-based iPods so that they have video functionality. So there wouldn't be an actual iPod video release. Just new iPods with that function built in.

Okay, I'm just hungry. Forget it. :D

Uhh yeah, or not :p

This is interesting... No bluetooth in the iPod, and no video playback.. What are they planning on doing to make it worth an update?

Okay, so it was a lucky guess. I really didn't know what they'd do. ;)

Same here, but then again no one knew. I looked back at my first couple of posts on this thread (#178 and #222), and realized my comments were almost prophetic (unfortunately, I didn't go through all the previous posts to see who else made the same points, though). :)

I do think it's interesting, however, that some people in this discussion were very adamant about there not being a video ipod in this announcement. I personally think it was a long time coming.

I was one and I still think it's a silly, half-arsed middle step on the way to a proper, usable product, for what I do not know. The iMac is where the real innovation is happening anyway as it move closer to being the MediaMac.

Apple was right in not introducing a video iPod, but merely updating the iPods to include meager video ability. A separate video iPod would have sold like turd cakes.
