what would be awesome if apple surprised us with a 4 or 5 megapixel camera but that probably wouldn't happen.

i think the ipod touch will have a 3.2 megapixel camera
microphone
3gs ram, speed, and graphics. but the speed will be a little higher because 3gs is underclocked.
double memory
same prices
i dont think gps will be in it this year. i think this year will be all about the camera. i think next year will be the year when gps comes.

I'm thinking the same thing...along with a mic and a better battery life ;) I think the GPS module still has some R&D to be done, so in can be an actual dedicated GPS, and not a location-aware device(like in the iPhone 3G & 3Gs)...

The prices... I assume will be bumped up a little bit.

CrackBookPro:cool:

What i am saying is a ipod touch that highly equipped may prevent some people from switching to iphone, which is hardly what apple wants.

Which is why I won't be the least bit suprised if September comes and goes and the touch we all know and love stays exactly the same.

GPS is useful

GPS is useful even without 3G - for example, you could geotag photos automatically. I also wonder how difficult it is to do route-planning with Google maps -- depending on what's contained on the Map data, wouldn't it be possible to enter a destination at home, get the directions, and the gps can then do the rest of the work of telling you where to go and all that? It's not like the iPhone pulls data consistently with its 3G connection while you are driving around along a planned route, right? (or is it?)

Now there's something I haven't thought of, it would make sense (to work with iPhoto) if they did somehow make the camera geotag photos.

camera

I think they will add a camera and a mic.
Since the iPhones camera was improved
then this year ipod touch will add camera.
Its the year of the camera. And some apps that i want
need a mic. like Shazam. :):apple:

I'm very interested to see what comes for the Touch in the future. I haven't really been using the phone and data features of my iPhone enough to justify the ongoing cost, but still have almost a year of contract left and would probably lose out by trying to end it early, just because that's how the phone companies roll.

'Tradition' has seen the Touch come with a faster processor than the current iPhone, and I would expect that to be the same again. I don't know about doubling capacity again just yet, but I am expecting a camera and better mic & speaker. It will probably be next year's update that gets me more interested :).

I've seen the rumours, and the cases that include space for a camera, but apart from the added mic and camera, does anyone know what else will come to the new Touch? More memory, a mic and a camera? Is that it?

Wouldn't that give the opportunity for people to hack it and turn it into a cheap(er) iphone?

Yeah, I think that the iPods will get cameras to get people to keep buying them (conference call did say they are finally starting to wane in sales) but I don't see GPS, 3G, or anything that might further encroach on iPhone territory. Only when they add substantially more hardware to the iPhone will the iPod touch get GPS, etcetera so that there's always the up-sell. The faster processor that's in the 3Gs is a given I'd think.

If it does get a mic, it'll be on the headphones, not built into the unit. I would prefer if it went to an aluminum back and bucked the SS trend that all iPods have had.

I wouldn't be surprised if the introduction of the 64GB touch kills the classic, either.

One thing most people have overlooked is a redesign of the Touch. Will Apple do the impossible and make it even thinner, and more streamlined? Or perhaps release different colour. Certainly, a faster processor would be nice, as would a camera and a mic. I think if Apple did release a 64GB model it would kill off the Classic. I'm planning on selling my 80GB Classic for the new Touch, mainly because I don't use half of its HUGE capacity, and because the Touch does everything the Classic does, then adds Apps.
