Plus it also has double the RAM which evidently dings battery life a bit as well.

I'd really like to know what the power impact of 2GB of RAM vs. 1GB of RAM is (battery and heat).
Accessing data in the flash has got to use power (and affect processing) too.
And then what is the co$t to add the extra memory.

It's SO not my area of expertise but it seems like the benefits would outweigh the minuses.

When's the last time you heard someone say, "Nope, you're not putting 16GB in that laptop, you'll totally kill my battery life!!!"

As an Apple technician, repairing iOS devices and Retina Macs yourself is basically pointless. It's ineligible for any future service, including paid, and you're left stuck with having to purchase a whole new device.

I understand enthusiasts will always want to have a go, and let them by all means. But for 99% of people, the exchange price isn't too bad.

(As a disclaimer, I am by no means an "expect" nor formally trained in electrical/computer engineering :))

At a high level, you have the issue of first attempting to check RAM, followed by the non-volatile storage (flash memory in this case), assuming a cache miss. Each one of these checks are not free - there are extra CPU cycles involved, which unlike RAM is one of the most power hungry components (of a phone, laptop, etc.). This is just the simplest case. The type of data being accessed is another. Using a Safari page as an example (since the tab reload is mentioned here often), then there is also the extra power used by the radio (either Wi-Fi or GSM) in order to reload the page. Using an online game as an example, now you have both the radio and additional GPU cycles running, both of which are also among the highest power consumers - not to mention CPU, again.

Once again, the issue is much more nuanced than the assumption of a linear increase of power consumption by doubling, tripling, etc. the amount of RAM modules in a device, because all of these components are not simply working by themselves, and changes to one will introduce a cascade of effects to the others.

This is almost everything I was hoping for - A8 chip, 4inch Retina display, and Bluetooth 4.1. However, the deal breaker for me is lack of GPS, and thus navigation apps.

you can use third-party bluetooth GPSs with the iPod Touch. I've never tried it, but apparently they work - with limitations.

What a tiny battery, no wonder the battery life is the same! Where did the A8's efficiency go?

this is delusional.
this has 6x performance of the 5th gen. - with SAME battery life.
if you don't call that efficiency, you might want to get your logic checked.

It should have had gps and touch ID. Even the ability to dual pair with the Apple watch for excersize.

With all those turtles surly battery life will suffer and just make the UX sluggish, or turtle-ish.

Those aren't tortoises. They're turtles. And since the average sea turtle is about 5 feet long, it appears the new iPod Touch has an impressive 140" screen.

This could be the first time I’ll have had to take the side of my house off and put in some extra jack posts just to take delivery of a piece of Apple gear.

Q. What’s in the box?
A. 300 gallons of sea water,,,,

So it must come in a really big OtterBox? Nice!

Just realized my iPhone 6 was running on A8...for some reason thought it was like A6 or A7.

Guess it just runs so good I stopped caring about what specs it had. Before the 6, I had the iPhone 4 (easy to remember that it also had the A4 chip).

Even the iPhone 5/5S had a bigger battery with the same size display. Apple must have done some hardware magic with the A8/uwotM8 in order to get the same battery life. Like, it has 500 mAh less than the iPhone 5/5S had.

5 and 5S were about 1.5 MM THICKER than this iPod
This iPod is as thin as the iPad Air 2.
Or I should say the iPad Air 2 is as thin as this iPod since this design was out since 2012

I'm curious whether his actually impacts regular use or if it's all just meaningless. I personally would think 6x the performance of the last iPod is worth a minor cut in battery life, anyway.

No, I don't need to get my logic checked. I need to be more specific with my posts so people won't eat me alive.

I was referring to the fact that (according to Apple) the A8 only draws 50% of the power of the A7 and uses that to compensate for the bigger screen in the iPhone 6 (would an iPhone 5s with an A8 not have better battery life?).

Now, the iPhones 4s, 5, and 5s all have batteries with roughly the same mAh (only increased 10% in size from the 4s to the 5s), so that proves that the A6's and A7's extra performance did not require much larger batteries, since battery life actually improved a bit with each model. In other words, the A6 and A7 are power efficient, even if they are each twice as powerful as their predecessors.

Therefore, had the iPod touch been equipped with an A6 or A7, battery life would have stayed the same. But, since the iPod touch has an A8 and does not have a bigger screen like the iPhone 6, then battery life should have improved by at least one hour of video. That is the missing efficiency that I was referring to.
