What a tiny battery, no wonder the battery life is the same! Where did the A8's efficiency go?

The CPU/GPU in this is gigantic compared with the iPad 2's innards.

At least it's got 1GB of RAM. It would have been nuts had it only been using 512MB, but this is Apple...

Those aren't tortoises. They're turtles. And since the average sea turtle is about 5 feet long, it appears the new iPod Touch has an impressive 140" screen.
And the battery life should be able to support monthly music playback without one charge. ;)

Look like a touch nut....

So, users want a GPS while not being a phone ? Who would have ever thought of that... I doubt Apple even does.

What is it with all these repairability scores. I've never had to repair any Apple device in my life, and if you do drop or damage your device in some way which damages it this much, you should bebanned from owning Apple devices. This is more like abuse.

Just make it fatter Apple. I prefer a device that I can use all day instead of an ultra thin design. There is such a thing as too thin.

So the new ipod touch has around half the battery capacity of the new iphone (1043mAH ipod6 vs 1810mAH iphone6) and almost a third that of the iphone 6 plus (2915mAH)?

I will likely buy one in the next few months to replace my dying touch 4, but it will be a minimal upgrade. It will be faster, better camera, and won't crash as much, but the only real new feature will be Siri. The iphone6 is plenty lightweight and thin with 1810 mAH battery. I would have loved a beefier battery in this, or if they released a "touch" for $199 and "touch plus" for $299 or so with big battery and a GPS.

I will just be buying a protective case with extra battery built in (and possibly gps but these are ~$100!) which kind of ruins the asthetics, but Apple refuses to ship decent batteries in the ipod line.

(Also, people are missing the picture on battery life.. its not the CPU that eats power, its typically the display, whether you are talking about laptops, phones, tablets.. Hence why the 6plus has a ~50% larger battery than the 6 but gets only 1 more hour of wifi internet browsing (12 vs 11 hours).) The specs are identical except for the screen, it just needs all that juice to run the larger screen for the same amount of time.

As an Apple technician, repairing iOS devices and Retina Macs yourself is basically pointless. It's ineligible for any future service, including paid, and you're left stuck with having to purchase a whole new device.

I understand enthusiasts will always want to have a go, and let them by all means. But for 99% of people, the exchange price isn't too bad.

That's what iFixit doesn't want people to know: Once your iOS device is out of warranty, you get an "out of warranty repair" which basically means you swap your device for a refurbished or new one, for about half the price of a current new one with lowest memory capacity (so to replace a 4s with 16, 32 or 64 GB, you pay the same money, and you get the original memory back). It depends on the product, but my wife got a brand new 4s very cheaply that way; I suppose at some point Apple doesn't have refurbished items anymore.

The add on GPS units are around $100. At that point, you'd be much better off taking your $300 and putting it towards a used iphone 5 or 6. You'd have the same basic specs, plus a much larger battery and integrated GPS. The 6s will be out soon, and you can typically buy the last model for $200-$300 used.

Unfortunately, since there is no real competition to the ipod touch (other than a used iphone), Apple can probably get me to buy this, and then in a few years sell me one with a GPS, getting me to spend $600 on 3 ipods by slowly adding features one at a time.

And Apple choose not to run their iOS on native 1080p resolution but constantly downscale it to a lower resolution. This drains power a lot as well.

And such downscale theory could perfectly explain why all my screenshot made on iPhone 6 plus is not native 1080p but a resolution rarely see.

I feel really confused why Apple choose this way to support other resolution, rather than supporting it natively.

What I really need is a 128GB iPod WITHOUT the fancy touch screen.
What you need is one of these. Best iPod I have ever owned. Still goes with me everyday, everywhere.

Yeah, you get 7 years of OOW repair coverage before the device is considered obsolete/vintage. It's good how they don't charge extra for larger storage capacity models, but it's a (further) little bit of a kicker for those who still buy 16GB devices.

The refurbs are always bang-on in terms of quality, too - I've never been able to tell the difference between them and a new one. Plus, all exchanged devices come with either 90-days warranty minimum.

Even the iPhone 5/5S had a bigger battery with the same size display. Apple must have done some hardware magic with the A8/uwotM8 in order to get the same battery life. Like, it has 500 mAh less than the iPhone 5/5S had.

Apple's obsession with thin is killing battery life.

True, but this should just put an emphasis on how puny the iPhone's battery has been for a few generations.
its no thinner yhan before. Ge

Maybe because having a larger screen users more battery. Also, from a dev side that way of doing thing is easier (I think as of IOS 9, it doesn't make a difference anymore for devellopers).

i think you will feel the slow loading speed annoying. ;)
That way doing it is easier? So developer only need to prepare for high resolution resources, and Apple will "intelligently" downscale it to fit smaller screen?

I am not a developer. But from user point, I don't think this is a good way to drive 1080p screen.

EDIT: The main selling point of the A8 was that it was 50% more power efficient than the A7, and the iPhone 6 used that efficiency to compensate for the increase in display size. Since the iPod touch's screen size remained the same, shouldn't battery have improved a bit?

Well more efficient doesn't necessarily mean less overall power. It means the same work at less power.

You'd have to look at the total power output of the A5 vs A8.

You're right. I wish we had more specific information on the A-chips :(
