TLDR; same rumors we have been reading for the last year except they needed to post a new article about the same information but coming from someone new.

And the first comment on that post is complaining about it being repetitive 🤣

Leakers have been saying there is going to be under screen Face ID for at least the past three versions of the phone. I guess if you keep saying it's going to happen you'll eventually be right.
People forget that the current FaceID is under the screen. 🙂 Under the screen with pixels in front of it would be the novel thing!

I like the Dynamic Island though…
Even Android vendors like it. That’s the main reason why I think they’re going to keep unobscured FaceID. They’ve already built the expectation of a black area on the screen in the middle, why change that to a dot on the side which would require a MUCH larger Dynamic Island to “hide”?

The camera button on the lock screen is off-center, the camera app icon is off-center on the home screen and in Control Center, the Camera Control button is off-center, the rear cameras are off-center… I’d say it’s the front camera that is the outlier here.

Actually, the front camera is already off-center within the Dynamic Island. And it’s not even consistent across models; the Air has it on the left, while other iPhones have it on the right. What are you doing Apple?! 🤪
💀 Center it all, Apple! Ha. It drives me crazy that in recent versions of iOS, when the volume is at 50% it’s off a little bit to the left, ugh

At least the front camera is hidden in the island currently, I don’t have to look at the back very often lol

The under-screen FaceID that we've been told would be on every phone released in the past 5 years. Right about the time the under-screen TouchID that the same folks claimed would be coming the 5+ years before that.

The fact that everybody seems to love the Dynamic Island (despite massive concerns before unveiling it) really shows how good Apple can be at pushing hardware and software to find elegant compromises that turn out to be useful (unlike Camera Control which I hope will be turned into a simple button). I also love it and like its pill-shape more than the circle cutouts on Android. It also makes iPhones look like iPhones, like the notch before, the home button before that. Hopefully Apple will continue to impress us somehow.

like people didn't read the leak

island isn't going anywhere will just be smaller
Will be odd if it’s in the corner to connect with the camera cutout though. Here’s hoping they find a way to center the camera

I’d prefer if they just shrink the island if it ends up looking like the under-display cameras on other products (the screen area covering the camera is noticeably lower-resolution, like 1/16 lol, and the pics still look bad), but maybe just for faceID the resolution of the infrared cam is low enough that they can do a retina display over it and still have it be accurate enough

Generally speaking the rumor has been, for a long time, apple slowing moving towards a screen only phone with no punch outs for the 20th anniversary phone. Which exact phones get which changes has fluxed a bit, from the notch to the current design to what seems to be next, but the overall rumor of their target hasnt changed

This ^^^ For me, the dynamic island almost looks like a call-back to the OG iPhone’s speaker cutout. Apple knows how to make things that look iconic for sure.

I guarantee this is why they’ve kept the iMac chin, when they could have made the design a few mm thicker and eliminated it. It’s what makes it look like an iMac and not a generic display!

Still nothing but phablets.
The iPhone 17 is 71.5 mm wide. The first gen Galaxy Note, an actual phablet, was 83mm wide, and nowadays they’re ~78mm

It’s much closer to the size of an iPhone 6 (67mm), than to an actual phablet

They’re not going to make an iPhone for 5% of people that want a very small one, for the same reason I can’t buy a manual VW GTI anymore: there’s likely no ROI for them

Wake me up when they make something under 70mm wide. 😪
The 17 is the same width as the 11 Pro (which was not a big phone imo), but thinner and weighs less despite a 20% bigger battery 🤷🏼‍♀️

While I think it would be nice if they brought the mini back with a 5.8” display, which would probably sell a lot better than 5.4”, I just don’t think it’s going to happen

very curious if they actually do the under-screen face id
From the notch equipped models forward, iPhones have always been easily recognizable from the front. That's not only because of the components in the notch or the Dynamic Island, but a deliberate styling cue designed by Apple. The relatively new addition of the notch on MacBooks also serves that dual purpose.

Although the idea of eliminating the Dynamic Island is very popular among Apple users, it's hard to imagine the company would give up the clever styling cue. Years ago many other smartphones have hid the camera and various sensors behind the display, proving Apple has simply been procrastinating.

Good to hear this news as this is a step towards achieving the all screen iPhone for 20th anniversary. Waiting to see whether the hole cut out for the camera is at the center or on the left/right corner. Also will be interesting to see the changes to dynamic island.

I honestly don't mind the current dynamic island - in fact, I quite like it.
What does get to me, for some strange reason, is that camera hole being in one corner and not centered on the screen - maybe I'm being a bit OCD, but that lack of symmetry on the front panel get's me.....
