Recapping Rumors About Under-Screen Face ID and Touch ID on Future iPhones
Earlier this week, display industry consultant Ross Young claimed that iPhone 14 Pro models will feature both hole-punch and pill-shaped cutouts that replace the notch. If this design proves to be accurate, it rules out Face ID fully under the display this year. In light of this latest rumor...forums.macrumors.com
People forget that the current FaceID is under the screen. 🙂 Under the screen with pixels in front of it would be the novel thing!Leakers have been saying there is going to be under screen Face ID for at least the past three versions of the phone. I guess if you keep saying it's going to happen you'll eventually be right.
Even Android vendors like it. That’s the main reason why I think they’re going to keep unobscured FaceID. They’ve already built the expectation of a black area on the screen in the middle, why change that to a dot on the side which would require a MUCH larger Dynamic Island to “hide”?I like the Dynamic Island though…
💀 Center it all, Apple! Ha. It drives me crazy that in recent versions of iOS, when the volume is at 50% it’s off a little bit to the left, ughThe camera button on the lock screen is off-center, the camera app icon is off-center on the home screen and in Control Center, the Camera Control button is off-center, the rear cameras are off-center… I’d say it’s the front camera that is the outlier here.
Actually, the front camera is already off-center within the Dynamic Island. And it’s not even consistent across models; the Air has it on the left, while other iPhones have it on the right. What are you doing Apple?! 🤪
I know I knowww… haha. It’s not all their fault, though, there are other companies in The Consortium®Apple takes turns with Google chairing the Unicode emoji subcommittee.
Will be odd if it’s in the corner to connect with the camera cutout though. Here’s hoping they find a way to center the cameralike people didn't read the leak
island isn't going anywhere will just be smaller
Generally speaking the rumor has been, for a long time, apple slowing moving towards a screen only phone with no punch outs for the 20th anniversary phone. Which exact phones get which changes has fluxed a bit, from the notch to the current design to what seems to be next, but the overall rumor of their target hasnt changedThe under-screen FaceID that we've been told would be on every phone released in the past 5 years. Right about the time the under-screen TouchID that the same folks claimed would be coming the 5+ years before that.
This ^^^ For me, the dynamic island almost looks like a call-back to the OG iPhone’s speaker cutout. Apple knows how to make things that look iconic for sure. The fact that everybody seems to love the Dynamic Island (despite massive concerns before unveiling it) really shows how good Apple can be at pushing hardware and software to find elegant compromises that turn out to be useful (unlike Camera Control which I hope will be turned into a simple button). I also love it and like its pill-shape more than the circle cutouts on Android. It also makes iPhones look like iPhones, like the notch before, the home button before that. Hopefully Apple will continue to impress us somehow.
The iPhone 17 is 71.5 mm wide. The first gen Galaxy Note, an actual phablet, was 83mm wide, and nowadays they’re ~78mmStill nothing but phablets.
The 17 is the same width as the 11 Pro (which was not a big phone imo), but thinner and weighs less despite a 20% bigger battery 🤷🏼♀️Wake me up when they make something under 70mm wide. 😪
From the notch equipped models forward, iPhones have always been easily recognizable from the front. That's not only because of the components in the notch or the Dynamic Island, but a deliberate styling cue designed by Apple. The relatively new addition of the notch on MacBooks also serves that dual purpose.very curious if they actually do the under-screen face id
If true and it’s offset to one side it’ll be proof positive Apple has lost their way. Once a company that took design seriously has now resorted to grasping at straws. Please no top left camera on the screen. Some of us need all the symmetry we can get
