Apparently you fail to understand the idea behind a cheap shot. This is not a cheap shot. This is just funny.

Right you are.

Main Entry:
cheap shot
Function:
noun
Date:
1971

1 : an act of deliberate roughness against a defenseless opponent especially in a contact sport <taking cheap shots at the quarterback>
2 : a critical statement that takes unfair advantage of a known weakness of the target
— cheap–shot transitive verb

As has been pointed, it does this with every device that has a SMB share, including those that don't run Windows (Linux, various routers, etc). In that sense, it's highly irritating and just plain incorrect. It's like making funny of Yugos by calling every car a Yugo.

Microsoft take a stab at Apple? No! Never.....ohh wait what was that email I got yesterday from Microsoft......something about making 6pm useful.

Nope Microsoft would NEVER stoop that low! :p

Sorry, maybe I'm a bit slow but I don't see how Microsfot is taking a stab at Apple in that email. Am I missing something?

Date and time doesn't give it away? Just by chance their add would just pick 6pm on the 26th?

It isn't blatant but it isn't too hard to see.

I have to agree with you. Its a computer software Operating System! Its a funny harmless jab at another competing company (who I'm sure get along on a personal level). If this icon causes harm to any one of the company's profits, market share, or integrity then said company was doomed to fail anyways. Besides, average computer users wouldn't even see the reference, let alone know what it meant.

Humor, Sarcasm, and Friendly Jabs are what keep life interesting and fun...,among other things.

Amen. It's quite funny, really, to me. :)

That's about the coolest thing I've ever seen.
I'm buying more Apple stock Monday. End of story. 'Boom!'

Huh, this would be funny if it wasn't used so often. Like others commented, it appears on all smb shares, potentially even with a mac, so it's a bit off.

i think it shows that Apple are still a fun company - there's still a core (ha ha!) there that was present back in late 80s when the mac really took, and was there in the late70s/early80s pre-mac era. apple tried the whole ultra-professional being a serious company in the 90s and look what happened then? mac users think differently, we like having a bit of a laugh. i wonder how many of the people who seem to have been mortally offended by this icon are switchers and how many are long term mac users?

While I do find it amusing, perhaps they should have also included an icon for there own freezing iMacs. :)

sadly, i'm sure many are long term Mac users who for some reason feel this is a "dent" to their image which is sickeningly projected (read: defined) by their computer and OS choices, along with their other little "look at me i'm an individual" gizmos (cell phones, or trashy little media players). that and/or the fact that that their lives are destroyed by a silly tiny little icon showing up where a router icon should be.

on the other hand i'm sure there are plenty of these comments by windows users too.

FWIW i'm a loyal mac user and paying customer and have long put windows behind me BUT, i would find it hilarious if MS did the same thing. maybe a three legged leopard?

c'mon take a breath guys...

Oh, my god, I'm a crotchety old whiner, I live with a stick up my arse and I can not believe that Apple would stoop so low as to make a jab at Microsoft.

I mean come on, it is ok for Ballmer to laugh at the iPhone during a highly watched interview and talk about what a joke Apple is for thinking an average person would spend that kind of money on a cell phone, and how Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform on smart phones has nothing to fear from an over priced toy and how the Zune (big, brown brick) has stollen 20% of iPods market share, which is confusing as most Zune players are collecting dust on the shelves of retailers, but thats ok... Ballmer is God and Apple is childish for such a cheap jab that 99% of the end consumer will never even notice, much-less get the joke.

Get off your moral high horses and enjoy a good laugh... as they say, laughter adds years to your life, while complaining takes them away... besides, that stick up your back-end could cause a bacterial infection that could lead to an uncomfortable demise.

I would not consider that as MS taking a stab at Apple. If I had seen that as a standalone, I would have never guessed that they meant the release time of Apple. To me, it looks like they are advertising that right after you get out of office (6pm) you do not need to sit down with office work at home. Rather make time for yourself.

I really dont see the stab in the picture, and even if they had an intention of doing so, they did a very good job of making it absolutely subtle- unlike the obvious BSOD that Leopard puts out.

Quit whining mate... this is just a joke. if you dont like the Apple OS then you may as well gather up and leave this forum.....

And MS stinks... stop trying to make it look good.

how the hell do you get a PC server to show up with the BSOD icon? i connect to a windows share via "connect to server" (command-k) but i get an apple display icon with m PCs IP address... wtf? thats definitely not what steve had on finder for his 'PC in the addic...' hehe

I never said that I hate Leopard. I am just voicing my opinion that the BSOD icon is not professional for Apple to use for networked machines.

And please keep your opinions to yourself. Please don't tell me what I should try to do and what I should not. I have been using Microsoft's products for the last 15 years- and even though they may not have the friendliness that OSX has, I do not believe it "stinks".

Even if this is a joke, it is in very poor taste.

Pretty stupid and immature of Apple to me. Ive seen more kernel panic on macbook pro then i do on my vista desktop. It would be like Microsoft taking a jab at Apple by insulting what a piece of crap Apple OS is and using OS9 as the basis.

So this is an anti-microsoft forum or a Apple community? Because they are not mutually exclusive in case you didnt get the memo from Steve Jobs.
