Doesn't look incredibly difficult to get to the hard drive.
It looks like a false bottom to those hide-a-key containers. (Or a cookie jar).

I wanted a Mac with Firewire 800 and a user-upgradeable 8GB RAM capacity.

Until today, my cheapest option was the £1000 2.4GHz MacBook Pro 13".

So this has made my day - unlike all the gripers (that probably never would have purchased whatever the update) this has actually made my next Mac purchase cheaper. And I get HDMI, SD and integrated PSU thrown in - that's just dandy!

If it ran on SSD that would be the icing on the cake. Ah well.

With iPhone 4 and this Mac Mini, Christmas has come early for me. :)

It's better quality than iTunes.
It's often cheaper than iTunes.
It's quicker to go to a store and buy a BR, than wait for iTunes to download semi-HD.
You can watch it on any number of hundreds of models of PC Laptops with BR drives.
And your PS3.
And take it round to a friends house and watch it there.
And watch the extras, and subtitles, and directors commentary.
And lend it to a colleague for a weekend.
And your ISP will not cut you off for buying 10 of them in a month.

Infact, your statement is so wrong, it's ironic. There's nothing good about movies on the iTunes store. I see no redeeming quality about buying TV or Movies on iTunes at all. More DRM infested than anything else out there, poor quality, high priced. Where's the up side? I don't see a damn thing. Who's actually been hoodwinked here?

And if another person says 'Oh - but in the future it'll all be downloads'

That's great. In the future all our cars will be flying. We should close all the gas stations and demolish the freeways now, right? Because in the future, our cars will fly so we don't need them.

Pure blinkered idiocy - nothing else.

Here's a crazy idea... how about Jobs stops lying about the 'world of hurt', and gives his customers A DAMN CHOICE.

Put $100 on the price tag for a BR drive - and I'll buy it.

I'll never spend $100 on iTunes movies. Ever.

Love the way you put this, my sentiments exactly. Thinking about the future may be a nice exercise in speculation, but people generally buy computers to use them in the here and now. Think Zen, Stevie, here and now!

I too have a growing collection of Blu-rays, including not a few Pixar movies that look absolutely beautiful on my HDTV. I've tried out 720p sources on it and they are only okay, a bit soft, so why would I ever buy them? So we are still waiting for a real Mac HTPC.

WHY?! it is so expensive outside the us and canada...it is priced at 699 in the us which is the same as a 64gb ipad wifi, in france the 64 gb ipad wifi has a price of 699 euros and the mac mini which should be priced similarly has a price of 799 euros...why? this has happened in all other countries I've looked, they have extremely high prices...is there such a huge demand for mac minis?

I'm curious, for everyone asking for BluRay, have you tried playing a BluRay on a PC?

The current options are utter rubbish. Especially within Windows Media Center, they just don't work like they should. PowerDVD is complete crap, and it costs $100.

I've got an HTPC running Windows 7 w/ a BluRay drive in it, and its a complete waste. I'd rather take the extra 30 seconds and switch over to the PS3 or a stand alone player than put up with it on the PC.

Until Microsoft integrates bluray playback into Windows 7, and this is presuming that they do it well enough to match a $150 off the shelf player, there's just no need for it.

New Mini is still a nice jump from the old one, the 100 extra bucks is for foxcon employees. New case, twice the gpu:)CPU bump, HDTV with no stupid adapters:)Power brick gone these are all great featues and with a great OS ? $100 bucks more you can count me in. Next step a HDTV on sale of course to make up for Mini's new price. Purfect office set up or Living room set up. Piss on windows.:p

No Apple Stores, dodgy and slow support, little to no advertising. .

If Apple intends to spend substantial amounts correcting that perhaps that is where part of the 16% is going to. Buy/Lease stores , buyout/displace distributors , etc. They'd use SEK to pay more SEK based expenses.

If it is add 16% so that can make the $40B of cash hoard bigger then is bigger problem.

Yeah, sure it's going right into their pockets.

up to twice the GPU they say. This is under very specific conditions.

It is the exact same CPU available as an option in the previous model :(
base model before was a 2.26 new one 2.4 and lets be real is there any benchmark where the 9400m beats the new 320M? not that I have seen. We have the original Mini and the power Brick sucks.

Apple Wank Inc.

Any European buying this is dead from the collar bone up! Die Apple Die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

I've been waiting for a Pro machine for about 8 months and have just given in an bought an octo 2.26 Ghz. Having made the decision I've studiously avoided MR in case a great replacement machine came along and soured my joy. After a couple of weeks .. I've given in & had a look .. what is Apple releasing now? .. I'll face the humiliation of having made the wrong decision .. but no ... there's still no new Pro. TFFT! I got the Pro for 500€ less than the quad too!! That's why I jumped. Apple ... everything you do is based on greed and I hate you for that. Having bought this machine ... I can forget about your corporate sh*tting for at least 3 years. I hope you've changed if and when I come back to you.

So long ex MR-ites.

Just do a quick search and it shows that the nvidia 9400m gets 1800 3dmark06 while the 320m gets 4600. Now thats a huge difference in speed and I can attest because I have the 13" 2.4GHz macbook pro with the nvidia 320m (sold my 2.26GHz mac mini with the nvidia 9400).

320m is SO MUCH FASTER! I really feel like it has the same performance as the 9600m gt of last generation macbook pros! I know its an integrated GPU but it really feels like a dedicated one. Especially getting 9 and a half hours of battery life on my 13" and very cool to touch even stressing it, its amazing.

Can't believe they put a crappy core 2 duo in it instead of an i3. No way would I buy this. Damn, was hoping to replace my apple tv with this since HDMI was included. Guess I will have to wait until the next update. :(

If you do some research the i3 performs on par with a core 2 duo, in some cases the higher clocked core 2 duo outperforms the i3.

If Apple chose the i3 + the intel IGP, it would have been a HUGE step backwards from the core 2 duo + 9400m as the intels integrated GPU with the i3 chipset is MUCH slower than the 9400m. I can also attest to this as I had the 17" i7 2.66GHz model and while using only the intel IGP it was DOG SLOW.

Pretty much the mac mini now has the same specs as the previous generation 15" and 17" macbook pro with the faster core 2 duo + 9600m gt performance from the 320m! I dont see how this is disappointing.

To sum it up in layman's terms, the mac mini and 13" macbook pro base models got the hand me down performance from last generation's macbook pro 15" and 17". THATS a huge hand me down and increase in performance imo especially for the price.

The only real handicap was the graphics, sure a 330m option would be great but...........Its a complete machine and hooked up to any HDTV? No crying about blue ray...dont need it, It really is a nice option over iMac and by the way im typing this on the original 2.4 Aluminum job. TV & Computer merging and Mini fits great. Hey I can even play Halflife2 on a new Mini if I choose to, download a itunes movie or better yet Net flix:D Thanks for the comparison of the 9400m vs 320m. The new integrated graphics is finally worth something. I would hate a i3 and then have Intel crapographics crippling the machine.

BEAUTIFUL, beautiful update!!! Now about that $100.00 price increase... :( I think it is bound to happen unfortunately, this isn't the first to have a price increase. I think Apple is padding the margins again after having made cuts due to the economy. They were nice while they lasted I guess.

Yes I do.

As mentioned before. My HTPC is inches from my HDTV, I have Blu Ray drive and I use PowerDVD and it works perfectly.

Next.

Generally speaking, the price of computers have been going down over the years. Yet the price of Macs is going up. Back when the Mac Mini was released, it was $499. Then it was $599. Now its $699. This is no longer a "value" computer, even for a mac. The whole point of the mac Mini was to get windows users to switch over to the mac on the cheap. But now, for a PC user, this price would seem outrageous.

Well the price of the mac mini has surely gone up and that goes for the mac pro desktop as well but it seems that the macbook/macbook pros, iMacs have gone down in price with the performance going up. Maybe its just the most popular macs going down in price?

I agree. It's going to be harder to talk people into spending $799 if they are unsure. $499 is much easier
