I may end up doing a MacBook Pro if the Mini isn’t updated. I need some coding tools so the Mini may suffice but not if the internals are way old.

I seriously doubt there will be a new Mini, but of course nobody knows. I felt the same way a year ago and bought a used 2012 2.6ghz i7 quad core Mini Server and have been happily using it with Final Cut Pro X ever since. I considered getting a top spec 2014 Mini at that time, but it was more expensive and my 2012 quad is about 50% faster.

Don't know if I would buy a used 2012 Mini today in 2017, but I'm happy that I did it last year and it should suit my needs for another year at least.

I think I'm set on the MacBook Pro, unless the Air is updated before next year March time. After using the MacBook I just got yesterday, it's great. It's not huge, its portable. I am running Sierra using the patch. The only thing that's really slow is the hard drive. It's the original 160GB, but I have a 500GB that has Sierra on it already. I just need to get the right screw driver for the torx screws. =)

Let's say MBP unless air is updated sooner (so it sounds like the MBP haha)

They are not going to update the MacBook Air, it's just waiting to die. But they are great machines, I still use a 2013 11"/i7/8gb/512gb as my primary computer and love it. Very little was improved on the MBA since 2013 so if you can find a nice used one that is the most bang for your buck IMO. :)

I'm surprised at how well this MB is doing even with a patch to install Sierra (not sure I'm going to do High Sierra, seems like the hardware doesn't have any capabilities to make it work any better + the features are moderate at best). We shall see how next year goes. I'd like to get a new new Mac, but maybe another used one wouldn't be so bad.

That's good to know about the air. For some reason, the sturdiness of the MacBook is exactly what I'm looking for. The screen isn't too small or too large (like a 17" laptop I've had or the 15.4"). I thought about a MacBook, but for the price, why not a Pro? We'll see.
