how about using your computer not looking at the screen from many different angles in dark room to see what you dont want to see...

c'mon its OK. Not all panels have it but its acceptable and you have no guaranty that 3rd one will be better...

If you have an Apple store near you, just call them and set up an appointment and they can replace the LCD panel.
Before I ordered my custom 27" iMac, I went to the Apple Store and asked if I could return to the store if the display was defective or had a dead pixel. They said that they couldn't return a online ordered custom system at the store, but they could replace the LCD panel if there were any issues.

Yes this is a custom. But it seems like there would be more chance of dust getting in or other issues if they replaced the LCD, and I'm not sure if the 15-day evaluation period resets.

----------

I had a few screen issues (dead pixels, yellowing) with the first couple iMacs that I got. So when I went in to get my 3rd iMac I asked them to open it up before I take it home. It didn't have any of the previous issues, but it did have a similar band. The tech told me that it was normal and would go away over time (so I decided to give it a chance). I've had it for over a month now and so far so good. I think it has gradually disappeared and I don't really notice it now.

So I would give it a few weeks before you send it back. For me the only real show stoppers are the dead pixels and yellowing...

That's the first I've read of the shadow disappearing. I thought it was caused by a misalignment of the LEDs or something static.

The shadow isn't that bad on the second one. Like I said, my parents are leaning towards keeping it. But now with the comment about the light bleed I'm not sure. I was just hoping someone could tell me based on those photos whether everything is within spec.

I bought mine in May and had to bring it in 3 times for them to replace the screen. The 4th time they ordered me a new one, and it still has the same problem... I've given up for now...

Isn't there something we can do to get some sort of resolution to this problem, other than going to the Apple Store? Maybe a more direct connection to Apple itself... Will they ever recognize that this is a recurring problem?

So you had it replaced all 4 times for the same problem (shadow along the bottom)? Did any of them seem better than the others and do you regret not hanging on to one of the earlier ones?

The second one we got definitely has less of a shadow, although it's still there. Not sure whether we should risk getting one like the first one. Also a bit worried about the black smudge problem discussed here:
There is Hope for iMac 27" Display - Black Spots/Smudges/Dust in the display FIXED!

I'm not clear how prevalent it is or whether they fixed it in the Sandy Bridge model.

Yeah, same problem every time. The one I ended up with seems like the better one, otherwise I would've sent it back right away (I learned to turn on and test the computer at the Apple Store as soon as I get it, so that I don't have to bring it home and back to the store if the problem hasn't actually been fixed).

So, the problem is still there, but I got tired of going to the store and I've made myself be okay with it for now. Although the dark area bugs me every time I use my iMac...

I'm a designer, these iMac are supposed to be the best quality machines out there for design, yet the screen quality is uneven! sigh....

So we kept the second one and ordered a third for comparison. I've collected the thumbnails for all 3 below. I think the shadow is least noticeable on the second one, but I'd be interested in anyone's opinion.

On a black background, the light leak for all of them looks the same (like post #23). And the same as the 27" displays at my local Apple store. Reddish on the lower left and bluish on the lower right. Which is weird, but since they're all the same that's a wash.
