There is no mac pro update at wwdc, come on lets get real. Next thing there will be an update every 2 months

Seriously?
We haven't had a decent update of the Mac Pro for almost a YEAR.

The 3.0 octo-core wasn't an update, it was an addition of a over-the-top configuration. Nothing else was done except dropping the 160GB as an option

so what do you need a new case for a box that sits on the ground? the Mac pro is an amazing machine with the ability to upgrade just about every single thing you could need.

We could use a better base configuration.

Bigger standard hard drive, 2 gigs of ram standard (come on the MacBook has as much ram as the Mac Pro does!). The video card could be better too.

I'm sure Apple will update the Mac Pros, it is always a nice treat for the developers at WWDC.

Forget about new Xeon machines. Seaburg is not coming until H2.

What could appear is a minitower based on P35.

sometime i think It will be OK to use a single Clovertown CPU rather than dual woodcrest , If apple still want to use a quad configuration

'cause we can buy a second quad cpu for upgrade to 8-core system

I'm not sure why people are hung up on the base hard drive size, there are a huge range of options out there for size, speed and reliability if the stock drive isn't suitable for your use. Is it just getting something for nothing?

More or less. Yes you can upgrade the RAM HD and GPU but that is more money 1) I dont have to spend and 2) Dont feel like I should have to spend on a 2500$ computer! It is a little embarrassing at this point the MP comes ordered with some of these majorly dated specs/parts.

I am the one who want a new Mac Pro, as fast as it can be , but if i spends for $2500 and get a quad workstation that equal with my friend DIY PC next month (core 2 quad DIY PC that over-all cost is under $1000) . I think it is un-reasonable

I'm like your guy that keeping my buck and wait WWDC2007 with a hope.

Plz Steve, announce a new Mac Pro at wwdc

Your friend got a "consumer" chip, your Xeons are "professional" workstation chips.

This is because people are focussed on comparing a Workstation with consumer PCs. I would think there are alot of professional customers who don't need any better graphics nor do they need local storage anywhere near 250gb, paying more for a base config that suites a home user who wants a Mac Pro makes no sense for them. I'm sorry that Apple don't make the perfect system for you, we all have different needs, I doubt most Mac Pro configurations are perfect for most buyers, but that is where it's at with Apple.

As a side note, both Dell and HP who offer similar systems to the Mac Pro both ship their workstations with 80GB 7200RPM drives and low end (low power) GPUs.

iWoot... about your sig... how about...

keep dumb teachers out of schools... use Windows :)

Yeah, but even on a Precision 690 at half the price of a Mac pro, dell offers 2GB as standard memory.

You might say what you want regarding professional users requirements when it comes to graphics and harddrive space...But you can't say that more RAM is something they do not need.

Nope I can't, but the FB-DIMM situation was very different when the Mac Pro was released. The biggest gripe there I guess is that Apple don't change things on their machines before a revision. Hopefully the next Mac Pros will come with 2GB as standard, the MBP and prices of FB-DIMMs are both good indicators they will.

Right... half the price huh? Where are you looking? 1GB is the standard on the 690 I am looking at as well, oh and only one CPU STARTING at $2271...

It is not about paying more or suiting my spefic needs at all.. it is about getting the parts you woudl expect in a 2500$ machine! Simple as that.

A pro machine should come with a pro sized HD, ram and gpu (not top of the line but not bottom of the line as we have now!) You dont buy a PRO machine at 2500$ just to have to add more to it to make it pro.. that doesnt make sense does it?? Is it Pro or not? It seems like at this point the only thing PRO about a Mac Pro is simply the processors and that is all! 100% of pros buying a Mac Pro have to at least upgrade the RAM for more $.. 2GB is min for any pro multimedia work.. easily.

Seriously.. it is the same price as 1 year ago and the RAM, GPU, and Hard Drive prices have dropped CONSIDERABLY in the past year. I realize it is a tough spot for Apple because the processors have not come down in price and Apple likes to make updates with new processors.. that totally makes sense but after a year you need to at least upgrade a few of these things while we wait! Common sense! Throw us dogs a bone =-D

Exactly statikcat. I don't see how this is any different from people whining and waiting for MB, MBP, iMac, Mini, etc updates. Just because it is a Pro machine?

I guess the MBP RAM shouldn't have been bumped since you can upgrade right? The Mac Pro isn't exempt from keeping up with current hardware and prices simply because it is more upgradable.

A better base configuration has nothing to do with suiting anyones needs it has to do with staying competitive with the rest of the market and ensuring new users will get a Mac over a Precision. That is the nature of the industry, if it were done by some of the logic here we would all be running 8086s.

Just a note, CPUs will taking a huge cut soon. There is no reason they can't pull the 3.0Ghz Quad to the baseline with the 2.66 Quad and 3.0 Octo on the lower and high ends respectively.

What defines a pro HD or pro GPU though? For those not doing 3d work requiring a powerful card is a 7300GT not perfectly suitable? It's low power, can support the largest display, or dual displays, can still be used for non-intensive 3D tasks.

Concerning hard drives, what about those who don't create the type of content, or do the type of work that requires alot of hard drive space, or who are connected to external storage anyway and don't need space? 250GB is still alot for most.

I think the fact it's based on a solid expandable workstation platform make it a "Pro" machine.

I dont mind the 250gb Hard drive, if i get a Mac Pro i'd just put in WD Raptor as my bootdrive. Although more room would be nice!

Yep the 8600GT is pretty poor performance wise, not as much as the 7300GT though. 7300GT in a computer that is meant for high end graphics, what a joke.

My guess:

3.0Ghz Single Quad Core Chip
2gb 667 ram ECC
250gb Hard Drive
8600GT/S

My dream:
3.0ghz Single Quad Core Chip
2gb Cosair DDR3 (no chance)
2 WD Raptors (unlikely)
8800GTX in SLI (sarcasm) Maybe a single 8800GTX, heck even an 8800GTS would be a dream.

Yeah, I can agree that if anything is updated, that video card has to be one of them. I am hoping for an update at WWDC or sometime soon after. I wouldn't mind some type of price drop either.
Though that may be unrealistic...

Mac users: Hey, how about a video card not released in January 2006 for the 'flagship' Mac?

*keynote*

Apple: pwnt.

Not to come off sounding rude, but while the Mac Pro may be targeted at Creative Professionals, some people do use the Mac Pro for other things such as simulations that do not require high HP graphic cards. IMHO, Apple did the right thing by having the 7300gt as standard, with the option to upgrade to a better card for those who really need it. Cheers.

Bingo. I do statistical analysis and the 7300 is more than adequate.

cheers.
