The concept that someone would spend that much for a computer and stick 20+ year old hard drive tech in it instead of now much more reliable now far more inexpensive than when introduced SSD's was overlooked.

Understandably.

They'll fix it. They need dinosaur users too, ya know.
Nothing necessarily wrong with 20+ year old tech, especially considering the first SSD was actually introduced over 30 years ago.

I have yet to see 18-20tb ssd available where as 18-20tb HDD via satas are plentiful. Can't move to new technology when there is none. Just like the courage apple had to remove every freaking port on the pro. Way to go Joonny.
WHO needs 18-20 TB ANYTHING? The backups take forever, and God help you if you don't have one (or better, two) when it fails. And don't get me started on shingled hard drives.

I have about 10 TB of data, and I would NEVER have it on one drive. As far as my iMac sitting here with its new SSD and my new SSD backup drive and mind boggling backup speeds, I will never go back to hard drives once my new Mac Pro arrives and replaces my pre-trashcan Pro (kudos to Apple for making a top specc'ed one I could finally afford!) I have had a ton of hard drives over the years, and never once got anything approaching data recovery after a crash. Backup, backup, backup.

I'm probably soured on hard drives because my iMac was a uesless brick for two years until I had OWC put an SSD in it. And useless data recovery.

Good for you. I do have lots of data that I move around. So I do need that space. "just because I don't need it, NOBODY does".... Oh,as for backup, I have my NAS with 4 18tb drives in a raid config so I have plenty of back up etc. Just' sayin.

It should be able to address the SoC memory and also additional memory added via expansion.
Rumors had it Apple was looking into putting expansion memory and an M3 into the new Mac Pro.

To me, it looks like they gave up on the Mac Pro and want to phase it out. They must have thought that they would never recoup the design / development cost.

Apple will probably try to fix the hard drive issue with a software update.

and maybe waitting an other year for M3 is to long and they needed to put something out now.
to get rid of the Intel systems and to get at least some kind of mac pro out.

Congratulations!! All the MORE reason for you to have it and your backups on SSD's to backup, oh, I don't know, at least 100 times faster?

My pro photog friend said exactly that before his hard drive crash. With no backup.
? Your friend had no backup. If your friend would have had HD backups, it would have been fine.

As long as people have multiple backups, it's fine, whether it's SSD or HD or cloud or other or all of the above. However, for most people with large amounts of data, SSD is just not practical for this purpose.

My point was SSD's backups are faster. And save TONS of time. And time is money.

There. Now it's all spelled out, again, for the dinos.

You know there is that wonderful thing called human sleep?
During human sleep you can set your computer to move data to another data medium!
When you wake up it's done! Wow!

Wow, and just think, it only takes what, 3-4 WEEKS of all-nighters to backup the massive terrabytes you can't get with the new Mac Pro.

And burning up physical hard drives and taxing the system while you do it. I can still remember turning off Time Machine for increased performance in audio and video.

Why, sign me up right now! Wow!

I've got a bunch of old HDDs with tons of storage space that I've turned into Time Machine backups. They all work great, regardless of the time of day they're backing up (hourly). I'm honestly not sure what problems you're referring to.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There were all sorts of utilities (one was Spotless) to turn off spotlight and it was essential at the time for editing audio and video because of the constant taxing of the drives. And many people wouldn't turn on Time Machine either for the same reason. That's been resolved.

My pro photog friend said exactly that before his hard drive crash. With no backup.
Technically, better chance of getting data off of an HD with HFS+ than an SSD when they have died. My SSD failures seem to have been dead with no chance of ever getting anything off of it, one way or another while the HD's that have died, or about to die, I was able to get all or almost all data off. HD's give you clues they are dying most of the time but SSDs and flash drives seem to just give up the ghost all of a sudden, in my experience. SSDs are limited with the amount of data that can be written, while HD's can last over a decade if properly cared for.

Rule 1: If you don't have a backup, you have no data at all.

I learned that the hard way and will always backup as much as physically possible. Sounds like your friend just learned a lesson he will never forget. Backup, backup, backup...
