My main complaint is that you can't swap out the "cards" to upgrade. It seems that they will probably keep the design the same, and just upgrade the internals. If you could just swap GPU's, or swap the CPU/motherboard without having to replace the whole system it would be a lot nicer.

No reason you can't do any of that....

This computer will be great to do live shows. As a JV, I will be able to manage many video feeds at high definition in real time. But that is just me.

This ALMOST feels like a computer built like a games console.

A small custom box, mostly soldered together, running the company who makes the console/computer's own OS and running the software fine tuned for the box also.

Would love to have a new Mac Pro, but Activity Monitor would be flat-lined 99 percent of the time.
Compiling and running apps in the iOS simulator would barely even budge the needle.

Yes there is, Apple love to glue and solder down everything.

So you believe the CPU is soldered to the motherboard and the video cards are glued in?

How do people come up with this stuff.

Man these comments keep getting more and more original. How do you all think of such novel things to say?

Cos its the truth*. I wanna replace my hardware. Its a shame you can no longer do this in Apple hardware. But the Mac Pro is a really lovely machine none the less.

*In my humble option.

Impressive. It really is a neato machine, but unfortunately the lack of expandability in the long tern ruins it for me.

But I wouldn't say no if someone were to buy it me. I could use it as an ashtray too.

When you are trying to win an argument, try to be more specific. It doesn't have "internal" expandability.... it has external. That doesn't make it any less expandable, just not the way you want because you need to complain about something so pointless just to be heard. Guess that is supposed to make you sound intelligent or something, eh? :p

The trolls have nothing but the usual drivel.....
Third parties demonstrate mind numbing FCPX speed, so obviously FCPX is completely irrelevant.

In your humble "option"? Yes, you are right. You have options and you choosing not to exercise them so that you can complain about something pointless?

Keep playing with FCPX, but when you really need to edit something do it on a real editing software (Avid Media Composer anyone?)

Apple are trying to convince us that the Mac Pro is a Pro, although we all know it's just a Mac...

Right, just like a Ferrari is just a car.

Man I'd love to buy one of those to edit family videos on but I know that would be such a waste on powerful machine. I'd be embarrassed to use iMovie on it :) lol!

I wonder if the 6 core model is even overkill for a professional photographer...

It's expendable, though with a hefty price tag and less elegant way than in the past.

Hmm... if you're wife is driving the kids to soccer practice in a Cadillac Escalade, you are already in the habit of buying exponentially more capability than what you need.

The new Mac Pro starts out at 1/15th of the price of what you would pay for a cheapo Escalade. So you know, should be an easy sell to the wife.

Avid say Apple are 5+ years late to the game. Hello Symphony Nitris!
Well I work with one of the largest Avid intalls in California. It is a pain in the behind. The main thing Avid has over FCP and other competitors is the networked workflow.
If I was a small post house or an indie videographer I'd stick to FCP. Much cheaper, not as steep a learning curve.
All that matters is the output.
AFAIK, both platforms output quality video.

You can swap out the GPU's and CPU's its called buying a new computer.

So what are you saving by swapping out those critical components? The case?

No. You just have to get something like this or this. Plus just wait for hard drive replacements probably coming in the near future .

For pro audio application I would need a unit that offers 12 USB ports (or 3 PciE slots) and room to install 4 SATA 3,5" drives, so I can transition from current MP.

Yes, the big box (whether you needed that size or not) that eats up tons of space was way more elegant.

This is a workstation. Most people do not replace hardware in the machine, the machine gets replaced. You stick with the turnkey system for stability.

What hardware do you want to replace, or perhaps install, in the machine if you could?

Premiere guy here. Not religiously, but as a student I started on the Creative Suite and it made no sense at the time to spend additional money on a different NLE when I already had one. Now it's inertia and I don't have a compelling reason to switch and climb the learning curve.

Wow, the ignorance and naivety of fanbois.

Might be time to switch to decaf. You made some unsupported statements that may very well be untrue, and they questioned them, that's all.

Is it sad that I keep checking my order to see if maybe.. just maybe Apple might ship my BTO a bit early? January seems so far away. Can't wait to check out how grading just 2.5k raw in Resolve is on this thing.

Got my pegasus2 r4 today… not bad while its initializing raid5 was able to get 500MB/s read and 640MB/s write on my rMBP according to the BMD test. Going to be a real nice change from the 270MB/s read/write I've been getting on the internal ssd's on my 2010 Mac Pro.

I for one, won't miss the lack internal storage. Or the ability to add pcie cards and winding up with a system that isn't as stable as it was when I first got it. Or spending a lot of money on a new graphics card that is a bit better then the previous one but can't quite run at full speed due to lack of power or capable bus :p

LOL! Nope she drives a Toyota . :)

Heh. If so, I'll wear my sad face in solidarity. :( I've logged into my Apple account three times today, just on the chance there might be a difference in the status. Even just a better estimate than "Available to ship in January." Silly, but there it is.
