very good news

I'm pleased to see the Mini driving sales too.

While I am not in the market for a new machine, I'm keeping tabs on both machines. If I were to buy now, probably would go with a Mini and continue to use my iPad as a portable where I can (for school).

Should I need a computer (post Uni), I do hope the Mini will continue to drive sales. I look forward to seeing how much more wonderful these little power houses will be in two years.

It's always good to see Apple computers driving sales and swell to see the desktop still coming on strong.

Sarcasm or not, I laugh at the people who argued so vehemently about Apple ditching the optical drives, going so far as to citing this as among one of the worst mistakes Apple could ever do.

Yea, right... Look at the sales numbers. Again, I'll reiterate: people who constantly b*tch and whine on these forums have no idea how to run a company like Apple. Numbers show the truth. Not a handful of whiny complaints on an internet forum.

Come on Apple. Take out the ODD in the iMac next. I'm ready!

I have no use for an optical drive in any of my Macs. I can't wait for my whole line up to be optical drive free. The way things are going that should not be too far off.

I think it's great that Apple is selling so many Macs. It wasn't long ago that they were selling just a couple hundred thousand a quarter, less than a million a year. It's been a fairly meteoric rise since the iPhone, too. Exciting times.

Agreed. I'm seriously considering a second HD for my MB Pro, with a conversion kit from OWC. They give you a slim external USB case for your optical drive, and a mounting bracket for a laptop HD. I have a fast 256GB SSD as my main drive, and want to put in a new 1TB spinner where the optical was.

I use my optical drive probably fewer than 10 times a year. I'd use a second HD for pictures and movie storage.

A quick search shows that Apple sold 1.3 million Macs in the last quarter of 1999, and 4.5 million total in 1995. So when was "not long ago" when they sold less than a million a year?

I know that statements ilke "best XY ever" are a bit lame and overly used, but FOR ME, the MacBook Air 13" 2011 is the best laptop I ever owned and, well, ever produced. A perfect balance between performance, mobility and design.
I even guess the best technical product I ever bought, and I used to own quite a few...

Brilliant

Suprised about Mac Mini but love Macbook Air so not suprised with them driving sales. Looking forward to Macbook Pro updates now and the phenomenal sales success the iPhone 5 will have :)

The MBA is to laptops what the iPad is to tablets. Simply the best. Optical is dead.

You're saying that the cracks are there intentionally, that they are not defects.

Many Cube buyers refused to drink that Kool-Aid. They thought that cracked cases were defects.

...it's called sarcasm, dude. i mean come on. really?

New Mac Book Air and Mac Mini are the best every day computer

Mac has come a long way from being a distant almost non competitive player to a heavy weight champ that is slowly wining over people the world over.

What makes the mac is realy the OS and not so much the hardware. Even with that said, Apple does not and never will use cheap components on their products. Dell and HP are known to use cheap components.

Why no Optical Disk drive? Apple knows the numbers. More people buy things online than the store. Itunes, iOS app store, and now Mac App store. With flash media and hdd drive becoming cheaper, optical media is loosing it's relivance. Besides you can buy a 3rd party portable optical drive for much less than the apple branded one.

Graphics have never been kind to Computer users. My i7, 6GB ram, Geforce GTX 260 was a high end gaming PC rig for a few months. PC hardware changes every few months. If you want to spend thousands of dollars to keep current then you probably don't play games. There are very few games for Mac or PC. It those pretty score and bar graphs generated from performance benchmarks your crazy mind likes. You can play even the most current Mac games decently even with the Intel HD 3000. Try it. Just add more ram to your mac first.

With the new Windows 8 being based on the flopped Window phone 7 platform. Apple can see even more people switching.

word

It makes me sick to my stomach to go into a best buy, target or a walmart and see half the store filled with optical media. Disgusting. The Mac Pro also lacks space for optical so its needs to go. Also we should open camps, led by Apple where we put people who still use optical media and keep them there in horrid living conditions. Then have Apple take over all the worlds governments so they can rid the world of that useless plastic.

Have to break some eggs to make an omelet.

Anyway, the Mac Cube never went away really. What do you guys think the Mac Mini is ?

The Mini doesn't really equate to the Cube in either (proportional) capabilities or market positioning.

It's a small form factor Mac. That's about the only thing it has in common with the Cube.

Just ordered my first mac

I have an ipad 2 and iphone, I have a bunch of pc's but macs never appealed to me until i say the 13'' MB air and its not too wallet stabbing price. Cant wait to get it, will be delivered just one day before school starts, way to end my summer :):D

Why do I keep getting this feeling that Mac-fanatics are supporters of tyranny?

It's so sad, isn't it? I can't believe that some people still think that there is a purpose for optical media. What are they thinking?
