This camera... what an embarrassment. I have a $4200 laptop and a camera in it that came with the iPhone 4S it feels like!
You don’t understand it, do you? There is not enough space to add a better camera given how paper thin is the chassis for th e display on the MacBooks. Compare it to the iPad and iPhone thickness and see why it’s much better in those devices.

Typical Apple - Instead of simply putting a 1080p camera in there, they’ll use 720p and then upscale and process the image using the 16-core Neural Engine.

Their supplier must have given them an once in a century discount on 720p webcam assemblies. I’m guessing we have about 5 more years before inventory runs out.
Omg. Why don’t you see that 1080p camera requires a thicker display on the MacBooks? Everything nowadays is a conspiracy theory. The MacBook displays are ridiculously thin! And that’s why we have a physical limitation on the camera.

I understand it - but surely some improvements could be made apart from software - its been like this for 5+ years. If you look inside an iPad or iPhones FaceTime camera, it is deeper than the chassis but not by a lot. I’m not saying it should be 4k, but less grainy less grainy and perhaps 1080p would be nice.

Anyone knows or can guess whether the “M1 camera improvements” will be available in ALL video apps, or just in the ones Apple writes (i.e. FaceTime)? I wouldn’t be surprised if Hangouts/Teams/Zoom look just as ****** with the new Air as with the old one.

Lol, so you actually don’t believe camera technology has improved the last +5 years? No one is expecting an 8K camera, but it would be nice with something where I wasn’t more pixelated than a 90s Nintendo character under low light.

you're ignoring the facts. a 1080p sensor of the same size would do *WORSE* than a 720p of the same size indoors. please educate yourself on this subject. you're being brainwashed by pixel count.
I'm not being brain washed by anything. MacBook webcams have been the worst webcams I've ever used in the last decade. I'm on a new MacBook Pro and it still looks like trash. It couldn't look any worse than it already does. The point being made is they badly need to change it, whatever that takes. I'd rather they just remove it entirely and include a free attachable webcam or something because it's unusably bad. Also, you're making it sound like you're convinced that Apple is incapable of including a better webcam. Give me a break.

It reminds me of 90s internet webcams.

adding a better sensor and lens would make the display much thicker/add weight. most customers wouldn't like the added bulk just for a better camera. that's why Apple hasn't improved the camera because it's physically impossible to do it without compromises.

look at the thickness of the display. any improvement to the camera would mean a thicker display or at least a camera protruding out from behind the display.

go ahead, show me a laptop that has a camera in the same position with the same thickness of the display that has a much better camera.

and just because it's 1080p doesn't automatically make it better than a 720p camera.

I think everyone would like a better camera on their 1000+ dollar laptop.

You're stuck on resolution. Replace "720p camera" with "dumpster fire" ... it's not so much the resolution at it is the fact that it looks like a grainy sandstorm, even in good lighting.

Not if it compromises the weight or the thickness. Nope.

You're ignoring the design of the laptop. Not everyone would give up weight or the thickness for a better camera.

Given the thinness of the display, the camera is good enough and cannot be made much better without a display redesign.

No the camera is not good enough and it hasn't been for a decade. Do you have eyes?

What a big don't care... its a webcam... how much res do you need to FaceTime anyway....??
Agree, not a deal for me/us. Looking forward to upgrading our 2013 Airs so it’ll be a big step up. Not power users but do plenty of the usual stuff, including photo/video editing, garage band, video viewing, etc. Confident enough about the performance that we picked up a couple with the base config/no memory bump.

I feel like we’ve been saying “Hopefully Apple will add a 1080p in the next MacBook Pro” every year for the last 8-10 years.

Dang, Apple. Just embarrassing.

Logic Pro 10.6.0 is coming soon (I think) . Found this remark in the Apple M1 chip footnote : https://www.apple.com/mac/m1/#footnote-11

Ahhhh so they are comparing the new M1 to an i3, no wonder they touted all those crazy performance numbers. In real world usage I doubt the M1 will be much (if any) of an improvement over an intel based Mac on anything other than Appples own heavily optimised apps.

All aboard the hype train... Chooo choooo.

When a beefy Apple Silicon comes along with a modern webcam and gets put into a 16" wake me up.

And only 2 TB3 Ports for either model too. What's up with that? I would have expected 4 ports on the MacBook Pro 13". That's a no for me...
I made the mistake of buying my MacBook Pro 13” without the Touchbar back in 2017, and completely forgot it only came with 2 TB3 ports...it still haunts me. Never again will I buy a MacBoon Pro with 2 TB ports.

That's actually OK at best. I am docked with my macbook(s) - but I have a monitor that has a dock that has multiple ports and so forth. Most of the time a laptop is meant to be undocked. So having 2 ports isn't that bad most of the time... When you serious about working with peripherals you'd have some kind of expansion dock anyway. But yes, silly to include JUST 2 ports. The other side of the laptop is just bare with open space.
You described the exact point, most of the time a laptop is meant to be undocked. I haven't got experience with a 2016+ MB but I imagine it would be quite difficult on the 2 port models hence I've only ever been interested in 4 port models. It's definitely an artificial limitation (yes not due to space) but to get people to get the more expensive model. Yet no Apple SoC model was announced with 4 ports... proving the Intel model to be much superior
