Which manufacturer is making a 1.5mm thick 1080p camera module ?
I think everyone would like a better camera on their 1000+ dollar laptop.

You're stuck on resolution. Replace "720p camera" with "dumpster fire" ... it's not so much the resolution at it is the fact that it looks like a grainy sandstorm, even in good lighting.

You are making assumptions based on a camera no-one has seen in action yet. Optics, processing and sensor size are FAR more important to image quality than the pixel count.

99% of your run of the mill 1080p webcams look worse than a really good 720p image.

those performance #s don't look like phoning it in to me.

There's no comparative data to back any of it up, so those numbers could mean or say anything they like tbh. We got no indication of what real-life comparisons you can make against Intel or AMD. Literally means nothing to say "3x faster than the most popular selling PC" if you don't know how fast that PC is, and I bet it's not a fast one.

Read anandtechs article if you want a good analysis using the A14.
Given all we have now is the slides if true it’s earth shattering.

It's an Intel i7 Surface Pro 7, according to the text, and according to Microsoft's website ... that makes it a Quad-core 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 Processor.

I always thought the only reason Apple favors updating camera technology on iPhone/iPad's is more favorable customers use the more "on the go" than Ma hardware who needs Facetme etc.. Most would use an iPhone for that i would have thought no?

I reckon after all these years, the tech "could" be there if Apple allowed in MBA but their choosing to hold it back.

Perhaps Apple just reckons there is no point is updating tech, where software would improve... but that changes in iPhone's where more would use. 720p is still good anyway

Thereis no way after two or three years you cannot still say the tech is not there, when you had plenty of time.

And then realise that no video conference service is streaming in 1080p ;)
Except I don't think that even matters. I use a Fuji XT2 for video conferences and it makes a world of different, even tho the actual stream is way less than 4k. With Mac cameras, it's both a low resolution and crappy optics. Just because speeds on the highway max at 60mph, doesn't mean I want scooter.

Better quality camera is just that. Better quality.

Absolutely agree. And I use my Fuji, SJcam, Logitech or even iPhone if I want a better quality for streams.

Fact is they don't make "better" cameras currently that will fit in that 1.5mm thick space and they should have considered that before introducing stupid thin displays. Built in cameras though are a convenience, anyone serious about their streaming is going to use an external camera

As we've been promised better image quality via NE processing though (which they made a deal of and spent some time on during the presentation) everyone should just wait for the reviews before jumping on the "Same ****** Quality as before" bandwagon.

They obviously know people were not happy, if it's still ****** I'll be the first to piss on the parade.

Right now everyone is simply speculating.

You can invest in a Mac Pro now, leverage 28 cores, add an Afterburner card and GPGPUs and have up to $50k or third party OWC RAM still a pretty penny and amortize it over the next five years only to come back in five years and discover Apple has phased out the professional lines they said five years earlier they're all in on
Are you 100% sure about that?

We got nothing but a large infomercial for the casual computer user. A+ on that. Professionals are left wondering what their future options will be.
They shouldn’t. Apple explicitly stated they’re the entire Mac lineup to Apple Silicon in two years. That means pro Macs powered by Apple Silicon are coming. Be patient.

Just watching the webcam from an M1-equipped MacBook Air streamed and displayed on a 4K LG OLED.

I've got to say that the image looks pretty damn good, even with fast hand gestures. It is in a different league to what we have had to put up with previously from the notorious 720P camera.

I'm genuinely impressed!

The actual footage looks better than the screen-grabs above and is remarkably fluid.

Amesome. I was just about to mention the Tech Chap’s interview with Bob Borchers via an M1 MBA,

It looks very good for 720p

Customers: Please add better camera

Apple: Better not spend $.50 on a camera and create a new processor instead, designed for nothing but ML. Then optimize the hell out of it and improve camera quality by 2-5% depending on conditions.
They did not upgrade camera now because this model will be refreshed Mid 2021 or on September 2021 and will get a new MiniLED bezeless LCD panel with Face ID module. New upgraded models possibly are during last validation test and even first initial batch production launch.

Let's wait for some more reviews from owners once they get their laptops. The issue isn't the resolution but the light capture.

My early-2020 MBA's camera is crap. Unless I'm well lit, it's very grainy. Apple say they've done "stuff" to make the video better in the new Air, so fingers crossed.

@arianlondon: The same awful camera video quality on early MBP 2020.

One of the reasons why I’m still holding onto my 2012 MacBook Pro, which also has a 720p camera......
Still on 15 in mid2012 MBP here. SSD keeps this thing fast enough for me. Maybe I'll upgrade when they upgrade the web cam and add some ports.
