I am serious and I have owned and touched used and played with hundreds of macs. If I ever bought a laptop that made squeaky sounds at me I would take it back. I recently bought a blackberry torch and it had a faulty button. I exchanged it. No need to start an entire thread that say NEW MACBOOK AIR CREAKING!!! its silly.

I have been apart of this forum for a few years. I post here and there but I think this is the 2nd thread I have started since my joining.

This place is supposed to be for informational purposes. I posted this because I dont have the ability to read everyones minds or touch every MBA. I wanted to know if this thing that was bothering me was actually a fault or just the way they are. I dont need your smart a** comments about how my thread is silly. If you dont like it, get the F*@k out. The next time I want to start a thread I'll check with you first (rolling eyes)

For the rest of you that were helpful.....thanks. Apple replaced my machine and "captured" the old one to send to engineering for analysis. The new one is much better and feels more solid. It honestly sounded like metal fatigue.

Oh well.

which 2009 MBA did you have? and what do you like better about the new model? I have the 2009 2.13 & 128SSD MBA and I am thinking of just keeping what I have since I don't want to give up the backlit keyboard and IR sensor, although 4GB would be nice. interested to hear your thoughts.

oops, sorry.. just realized that you had a MBP not Air

I did have the original MBA when released. I liked its form but the functionality left much to be desired. I had looked at every refresh of the MBA thinking I would one day buy another. I can say this. compared to all the Previous gen MBA I have seen, the display on this one is beautiful. the old one looked washed out to me and seed like it was very bright at the top but dim at the bottom.
This one is evenly backlit and beautiful, especially with the higher res. Also, the trackpad was another reason I could not go back to the MBA before. once you get used to the glass it is difficult to give up.

only you can decide if it is worth it, but I can say I am glad I waited instead of buying the last gen.

Im not trying to make it personal. I am sure you are a good person that has a problem. Other people screw it up though.

Interesting. Did you run the Apple hardware test first? Just curious, I'm getting an error reported although I'm not seeing any problem.

I was going to apologize to the thread starter with a private chat, but I want to do it so everyone can see it. He is right for posting his problem, and I am sorry for screwing up his thread. The iphone release freaks just got my underwear all bunched up. PEACE!

Thank you for your apology, I understand your frustration. I have been frustrated with the useless threads that get started by a noob the same day they join.

I accept your apology.

My click is coming from the upper right hand corner. I also did a hardware test and got the following error:

4SNS/1/40000001: ID0R-0.040

I would go to the apple store but I bought the MBA at Best Buy and I was contemplating returning it. BB only had the 2GB version and I don't think that will be enough in the long run...

Let me know if this is the same error code that you're getting.

When I bought my PowerMac G4, the mirrored drive doors edition, evertime I would pull open the drive doors with my finger and then press the superdrive release button the tray would get caught and hung on the mirror latch. I knew this to be a defect on my unit, but I decided to let it go.

This was back when burning CD's with mp3's was still big, well bigger then now I suppose. Anyway after anout 7 or 8 months of the tray getting hung up finally one day a piece of the hinge broke off and fell inside the computer tower. It got lodged in an area behind the right track roller and from that point forward the tray would never fully close and would make a vibrating noise that became really obnoxious.

So I agree, if you have an issue that bothers you, as the consumer no matter how minor the issue may seem, you should take it back. If it is sopkething that detracts from the user experience I definitely believe getting a replacement is a good idea. I wish that is what I had done with my old G4.

This looks like the exact same error I got. They didn't have any data on what it means but offered to exchange. I asked if they had gotten any 4GB units yet and they had. So I got an exchange for a new 13" 4GB 256GB SSD for the $200 difference that I paid. Transferring to data to the new machine. I did run the hardware test first on this new machine and it didn't report any errors. So it's not an error all machines are seeing

In addition to no error message, the new machine also doesn't have the click on the side I heard on the first machine, and the base just feels a lot more solid. I suspect one of the screws was not fully tightened but with the weird screws they are using there was no way to check this.

Does the Hardware Test come on the USB stick for the new MBA or do you need to use a CD from a different mac?

It's both on the USB stick and installed on the flash drive. Just reboot and hold the "D" key. You will get a blank screen for several seconds then it will boot into the hardware test. The short test takes about three minutes, the extended test about an hour. The error I got on the first machine was found even by the short test and it showed up every time I ran the test.

WTF... mine is creaking and the period button key is not accurate.

11.6 model here

does the cracking sound hurt your computer in any way ? if it doesnt, i wont get it changed.. cuz its not THAT bad... its like small and sometimes i cant even replicate it. but if it eventually will hurt your computer in the long run... then i guess ill go get it replaced.

also how do u check your hardware? can someone post a step by step so i can see if my air has any hardware problems or not

Yea, there's some flexing in mine.. I think i'm going to try and get my hands on Apples proprietary screw driver and tighten it up a bit..

I have the 'creak' on the left palm rest. I would describe it as the sound a loose floorboard makes when you step on it. It didn't happen until three weeks after I received it which is what concerned me. I took it to the Genius Bar. The guy said they had no information on it. But he thought since I ordered mine on the first day that I'd be better off switching it out. I had to call the on-line store (since mine was a BTO 13") and they are sending out a new one.

The engineers in my family say that it's to be expected - no matter how good your controls are in the factory, no matter how much testing, no matter what you do - there can be failures that just happen. The issue is whether the manufacturer owns up and backs up the customer. Apple has and so I'm happy.

I do thank the thread starter and the others who brought up this issue, better to know.

hey guys,

I've had my 13" air for about 3 weeks now. Just started to notice the creaking thing. I'm not sure if I'm being anal though. If I take it into the genius bar I'm not sure they could replicate it on the shop floor, they would have to go somewhere quiet. Mine is specifically when I pick it up with one hand on the front left or right. For those people who don't have a creaking Macbook air, if you do the same and wobble it with one hand, does it really not creak at all?

For those with a creak, is it noticeable all the time? Thanks

Bring it in. Replace it. Do not take no for an answer. Get a full refund if they will not replace it and just buy another.

Are you sure it isn't just the bottom plate that needs to be unscrewed and refitted (maybe slightly loose)? I just got my initinal MBA replaced (wobble), no wobble now but the new unit runs noticably hotter than the first one... If your unit is otherwise fine, I'd spend some time to see if it works itself out, or ask some Apple store clerck to refit the bottom plate. Avoid asking for a replacement until you know there IS a *real* defect..

Actually I had that done before having it replaced...It helped only a very little bit. Not enough to make it bearable. It went from very creaky to just creaky. And my replacement without creaks seems to run hotter now also. Weird.

I probably shouldn't be worrying but, little things like this annoy me and i just ordered my MBA a few days back... Can anyone describe where it is? How to replicate it? and possibly if any daily movement would cause it to happen. I tried a display model in a quiet store, both 13 and 11 inch don't creak for me.

I've noticed this a couple times, I just assumed it was due to the tight fit of the bottom plate in the body and when it shifts slightly it emits a "creak", especially if the MBA is warm or in a hot environment (thermal expansion).
It isn't noticeable unless you're looking for it and it's certainly not a big deal.
