This is the laptop I've been waiting or to replace my old (2014) Air...

I've been getting tempted by the base 14" Pro, but even the binned model has far more power than I need. But I do like the better display, webcam & speakers...

I'm in the same boat, early 2014 Air. I've replaced the SSD and the battery, but it's still showing it's age. I've been very tempted to get an MBP or the 2020 Air. But i'm trying to hold out.

It will have an M1 Air and M1 Min chip options. M1 Air will have 1 GPU core less than M1 Pro and M1 Min will have 1 GPU core less than M1 Max.

I am waiting... to make a choice between that or quickly getting a maxed out M1 MacBook Air if the new thing looks like a child's toy with white bezels etc.
I just got a MacBook Air M1 with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD this week. I'm pretty sure it will more than meet my needs for years to come. I don't listen to the rumors, especially those from people like Gurman who are more often wrong than right. I suspect the MacBook Air M1 2022 (if it materializes) will be an incremental update.

It would be nice if these came out in time for back to school season, but that's also why I don't expect it to happen in the summer (though I know they have done it before and excluded the new machine from the back to school sales)

This all looks good but if these rumours on how it'll look are true, Apple has to let the Air name go now. It wouldn't make sense any more, and it doesn't make sense on the iPad line either. IMO we should have MacBook and MacBook Pro, and iPad SE (current iPad), iPad (current iPad Air), and iPad Pro.
The longevity of the base-level iPad suggests that there's room for a base model, Air model, and Pro model on the tablet lineup, probably the Mac and iPhone too. The problem with base/Pro only is that too many people complain about not getting what they want ("pro" users want more power and features, the general public want cool designs, good cameras, and/or lower prices, people looking for the cheapest option want decent tech at a low price).

"Air" has always been a premium version of a product, distinct from the Pro with a balance tipped more toward design than power.

OK, I've made this same post several times and this will be the last: white bezels do not look white when you're looking at the screen. Here's a photo of an M1 iMac in a normally lit room, screen around 2/3 brightness. I've turned the exposure up a bit, even, so the brightness of the mic and the bezel look how they look in the room. See how much brighter the screen is than the bezel? Does the bezel look glaringly white to you? No, it doesn't. (But I guess if you want to turn the screen off and fume about the white bezels against the black display, you still could do that.)

ooo spooky. when I first glanced at this picture my brain saw a white edge on the MR wall and a painted sheetrock wall that looks yellow, almost like it had no bezel. then a few seconds later the bezel registered in my brain. oh me

Early descriptions described this new Air as being lighter than the current version. I haven't heard much about that recently. Has anybody else? For those of us who loved the 11" MacBook Air, the current Air is a better machine but it is light as a brick.

I could live with white bezels. It's been on past iMacs over the decades as well as light silver on past MBA's.

However, that protruding white notch...that just looks jarringly ugly. Unlike the MBP, that won't disappear into any menu bar.

Hope it's not heavier than the current MBA because of the tiny increase in screen size. Also hope they do something with the screen coating and/or software to make it easier on the eyes.

I'm ready for white bezels. And colors. Silver will likely still be available, as it is with the 24" iMac.

Besides, this isn't new. Just the current design cycle reading one of its extremes again.

My (more than) 2 cents:

1. Complaining about colors is ridiculous, when Apple always offers the "base" silver as well.

2. I love the white bezels. It clearly defines the end of the screen, matches the keyboard, and adds a bit of nostalgia for a long-term user like myself. But I would understand raging against the potential) lack of choice here.

3. I hate the notch, but can live with it same as the iPhone. Hopefully, it will not impinge on real estate, same as MBPs.

4. I believe the "M2" will be here when I see it. I think it'll still be M1; that chip is still bomb.

5. Sadly I needed to replace my ancient 2011 iMac and 2 MBPs sooner than this release, so a nice refurb base MBA fit the bill as a NICE upgrade. Such an old design, how can it still be so SEXY??

My daily driver is an Pad Pro though. Habit-changing/forming device that is.

When is the 13 inch MacBook Pro coming? Looking to replace my 2017 MacBook Air with that. I was looking at the 14 inch MacBook Pro but i don't need that much power.

Would have upgraded to the 2020 MacBook Pro 13 Inch but the webcam is a mess lol.

It's new actually. They never used white bezels on aluminium unibody products up until M1 iMac.

Here's a good explanation (time stamped)

so H2 22 sounds right.
Apple doing a modified M1 version (other than Pro, Max, Ultra) is nonsense, why would they introduce another "entry" level?

I would be really satisfied if it includes:
- Full Function Keys
- Same notch and camera as MBPro
- iPad-like flat sides

Would also like to have (but not compulsory):
- Brand new SoC
- MagSafe
- 500 nits

Don't really care about:
- Colors (as long as it has more options than MBPro)
- White bezels

Hope it avoids:
- 7-core M1 GPU
- More than $100 price increase (if redesigned)
- Any kind of price increase if keeping M1

100% agree, and this is why I decided I wasn't going to play the waiting game and bought a 16GB/1TB space gray refurb last fall. The current MBA design still looks so freaking sexy in spite of its age and will continue to do so for years to come. These light and colorful MacBooks might look cool when the first come out but they won't hold up like the current aluminum machines do. Heck, even my 2013 Retina MBP still looks beautiful compared to some of the crap being sold today by other manufacturers.
