What the hell? The MBA now starts at 1.049€ in Europe. Up until now it was only 949€. 100€ more for a new CPU, more RAM and USB3? Ugh. And I thought the price would stay the same.

I'm actually really pleased with these updates.. I was teetering between a 13" MBP or MBA and I was having a really hard time deciding. As of now I have a 15" computer and I'm sick of the large footprint so I knew no matter what they did to the new 15" MBP, it wasn't going to sway me. Seeing Apple neglect the 13" MBP and add the option for 8GB of ram (even if it costs 100 bucks, but I need it because I'm going to need to run win7 and OS X side by side) settled my decision.

OK, I thought I was wrong, but they indeed increased the price for a minor update! That really makes no sense. 1149 euros here int the Netherlands to get a 128GB/4GB, roughly the same price of the 13" until 3 hours ago... I am very disappointed!

I really think that I will go for an ultrabook or for an old 13" (if it drops in price).

I was surprised over the price increase as well. The 13" 256 GB one costs 2 109 USD here in Sweden, compared to 1499 USD in the US. There's usually a pretty big difference in price, but this must be a record.

But why still only one external display?

According to the tech specs, the new Airs, despite having the Intel HD Graphics 4000, still only support one external display (and the internal one):

"Intel HD Graphics 4000
Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors"

I thought that the former Intel graphics just could not handle 3 displays, but I know the new one can, so I wonder why Apple decided to maintain this limitation. Artificial differentiation between the Pro line? Seems unnecessary.

Please report back if you know / hear differently.

Thanks!

I think the new Macbook Air is great. It's exactly what I was looking for half a year ago when I initially bought the Air. 8GB RAM option, along with much faster graphics built into Ivy Bridge.

But it's tough to justify taking the loss and the hassle to upgrade from last year's MBA to this year's. Will try to hold out for one with Retina graphics, perhaps 2013.

Looks like I'll end up getting an 13" Air now vs the Pro since the 13 was neglected once again by Apple  . Was there any mention of increased battery life/size for the 13" Air like was rumored?

Intel HD 2500/4000 support three display outputs in a select variety of configurations on desktops. The output is still done over the PCH so it could be a mobile limitation, outputs, or pathing on the logic board for output.

Torn between the 11" MBA and the 13" I get two more hours of battery life at the cost of 1/2 lb. and a few hundred dollars. Work is paying for it. I commute by bicycle, so the smaller form factor of the 11" is tempting but I'm wondering if I'll miss that battery life. The SSD upgrade is so expensive. /rambling.

RAM is soldered to the motherboard, meaning it can't be upgraded.
SSD (from my understanding) can be upgraded, though I don't know how personally.

Thanks. I just found this out. Then I was thinking I'd just max out at 8GB ram for $100 more but now I realize the MBP 13" can handle 16GB. Doh.

I hate disagreeing from a position of intellectual weakness, but I can't find anywhere that the 3 independent display functionality of the HD 4000 is limited to desktops. In fact, this demo was done with a lappy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOHBkFOyckY

Perhaps it's because the Euro has dropped. The base stayed the same here and the other models dropped $100.

I want the 11" MBA! But I'm concerned about the screen size and my eyes - I noticed in store the previous model kind of bothered my eyes. Given that this one has the same screen I imagine it will be the same deal.

I had the first model 11" and it was easily the best laptop I've ever owned. I bought a 13" July 2011 model and have regretted it since. I have since gazelled that 13" and am going back to the new 11"

----------

anyone know the breakdown between the 1.7 and 1.8 i5? Is it really just GHz?

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if adjusting the colours, etc. would help. I'll have to check it out in store again. I hope stores carry the 128/8GB models!

Wait ... hold on ... let's see if I can ...

So the macbook airs have *smaller* screens than the new pro, but somehow they can't get the retina display onto the air ?

That's not how it works.

The smaller the screen, the easier it is to make the retina display, and the longer they have had to tool the production for it.

It is incorrect to refresh/relaunch/reissue the macbook air, in 2012, in ANY FASHION without retina display.

In fact, it is so clueless and mind boggling that we MUST ASSUME these are either omissions, or errors in the press release(s).

The other alternative - that someone, or some group of people at apple are *so amazingly incompetent* as to reissue the air without retina, is difficult to believe.

What a load of nonsense, are you for real???

Retina simply consumes more additional battery than can be stuffed into the current chassis.

I'd also wager that retina would require a dedicated graphics card, which isn't possible in the current generation of MBA. Give it a year or two.
