Well the store is up and no updates on this Tuesday

I still think this week is highly unlikely because of its proximity to the iPad launch. Mainstream media is still doing stories on the iPad. Why would Apple want to dilute that kind of free publicity and advertising? The news coverage has been overwhelmingly positive.

IMHO it will either be next week; if not the 13th or 14th of April it will be pushed back into May.

WWDC is too late. I think it's in late June, early July this year.

The MacBook Air is sure to get an update out very soon...
And it better be in the next 7 days.

I just got one for my birthday!

Steve Jobs: "And, so those are all of the new features we can expect out of the iPhone OS 4, which will also drive the iPads and be applied via software update. This concludes our presentation of the iPhone OS 4. Thank you all very much for coming, and thank you for your attention.

Oh, and one more thing..."

Yeah, I was there briefly. But really, I can't see the refresh to the MBP line being a "one more thing," unless it isn't really all that much of a refresh. If it is as big as many here want it to be then it'll be an announcement unto itself.

I'd still place money on WWDC. Everyone says "that's too late," but again, if it is a really big refresh, then we can expect to wait a bit longer.

Fortunately I haven't spilled anything on my MBP lately, so I can wait.

And we can already rule out today, the store is up and running just fine. So not this Tuesday. Besides, with a special announcement coming this Friday, I'd say Apple's no longer exclusively using Tuesdays for announcements. No point in hinging all your hopes on this Tuesday, no wait, next Tuesday, no wait, the following Tuesday, no wait...

2 of the 15 inch MacBooks were changed shipped times to 2 business days on the UK store...

I only see one (the 15-inch with 2.66GHz) with 2 days shipping time and unfortunately there is nothing similar in the apple-stores in other countries (like es,it,fr,de)

I see your point, and it is somewhat sensible. However, no matter how you paint it, updates to the MacBook Pro are just part of the evolutionary progression of the computer. It is highly unlikely that they will bring any kind of new revolution to the computer industry. In short, though they are a big deal to those of us desperately waiting for updates because we don't want to buy 2 year old technology but would rather have something a little more future-proof, they certainly aren't the Next Big Thing™ and certainly don't seem to merit a big event or keynote for them alone.

Again, though, this may still be wishful thinking on my part, because I have been waiting for about 4 months now, ready to hand Apple my money the moment they are released. My computer has been slowly failing bit by bit, and "the old cripple" is ready to be replaced by something new. ;)

I agree. Jobs has hinted of major changes in the Macintosh line in 2010, but that doesn't mean that they'll revolutionize the computer industry. Just that it'll be something more than a processor speed bump. I don't know if new processors count as major or not. Heck, with Apple it could just be a new look, a new case material... "Major" is in the eye of the Jobs. :)

I think the big thing that is going to be happening around WWDC is the new iPhone not the new MBP. I also think that between now and WWDC the new MBPs are also going to be released. Not sure if it will be in april or may or what not, but just hoping that they will be release before WWDC.

The i7 desktop with a good SSD is scary fast. The first clue is when you log in - and it's just a few seconds. Second clue is when you drag and drop a 100 MB file - and it happens so quickly that there's no "Copying..." dialogue.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see increased cache levels for later iterations of this architecture.
Sandy Bridge will actually have less L3 cache per core…at least for low-end and mainstream CPUs (high-end will have more). That cache is (I think) significantly lower latency than Nehalem/Westmere L3 though.

I've been saving for a Mac ever since OSX first came out. I now finally have the money (other things took precedence!) and have decided to wait for the refresh. My question is, how long after a hardware refresh does it usually take for the h/w (and s/w I guess) to stabilise and become a safe buy? Assuming there will be a refresh "soon" I don't want to buy in if the initial hardware refresh is historically buggy and unstable.

I think you're spot on here. The release cycle for the iPhone is typically in line with the WWDC. The iPhone 3G S was hardly a compelling reason to upgrade from my 3G.

I think that Apple will release the new MB and MBPs well before the WWDC (at lease I hope they will).

I don't know what "WWDC" stands for, but when is it?

* I'll move my non-essential files to the external drive (e.g., various installers that I currently keep on the hard drive).

I do this too - but unfortunately my "non-essential" drive has to be connected a lot more than I like. I was just on a holiday and took 24 GB of photos - no space for photos and music on the 128 GB SSD. Etc.

The kind matters though, check out anandtech's review of them for more details.

Yes, surprisingly there are slow SSDs on the market. Check especially the ones that look like a good deal, some are barely faster than a spinning drive at writing.

Also, be sure to format the SSD with a tool that is SSD aware - a bad format can cut write speeds in half. (Read this comment (search for "savvy") for more info.)

Think larger 5400 RPM hard drive, e.g. 500GB or 640GB.:)

I'd like that, too :)

Why keep the SD card slot? There is a new SD standard coming and then this slot will be outdated. The ExpressCard slot allows the user to upgrade the card reader and even use non-SD cards, e.g., CF cards. An ExpressCard slot offers a lot more flexibility for pros(umers).

For one thing, it'll be awhile before the new SD standard catches on. Next time Apple releases new MBs, maybe go to the new standard. Besides, when Apple replaced the ExpressCard slot w/ an SD slot in the MBPs, didn't Steve say that only like 1% of people use it? While I use mine, I'm sure the average user doesn't use theirs.

No thanks, I prefer not to squint.
Have you ever used one? The text on a 1900 x 1200 on a 15" screen strains my eyes. A higher resolution is not necessarily better.

Then use Command-= (equal/plus sign). That'll make the text bigger. Besides, all displays I've used for over a decade can support multiple resolutions. We could have the option of 1900 x 1200 and still be able to go lower for those with bad eyes.

This is a great setup - but what I would love is for some consideration be paid to the thousands of deejays who are using laptops now. Black cases, clean hi-rez audio, long batteries, fast processing, low latency, back-lit keys. CLEAN AUDIO!

Does the optical output not give a clean audio signal? I've never used the one on my laptop.
