Um yea I think this pretty much points to an update on the 16th, unless Macmall does this frequently.

Does any more experienced apple user remember if macmall has done this before a mbp update in the past?

The sale was there before they went down.

that doesnt change this argument. But what does is the fact that macmall would not know of an update ahead of time

Wasn't trying to 'change the argument'.

So could macmall know the release date and have a sale up to the 15th to be ready for new stock coming Tuesday 16th?

I'd be shocked if MacMall had some inside information about when the new MBPs will be released. They know exactly what we do:

* Apple has updated their MacBook Pros every 8 months since Oct-2006
* Apple usually releases products on Tuesdays
* Intel announced new Arrandale processors at CES in January
* HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc. already have Arrandale notebook models available
* Developer builds of OS X have referenced previously unreleased MacBook Pro 6,1 and 6,2 since October
* Intel announced a promo in mid-January for its sale reps with the prize being a Core i5 MacBook Pro - Intel quickly pulled the promo claiming it was an error
* Yesterday a benchmark was posted indicating that the result came from a new MacBook Pro although this could be a fake
* NVidia is set to introduce their new Optimus GPU technology on Feb. 9
* MacWorld starts Feb. 9 although this year Apple is not attending the event

If I forgot any facts please let me know, but I'm pretty sure this is the evidence we have right now - it's left as an exercise for the reader to figure out what it means. ;)

I agree with the Optimus release date, it helps with sales, why not release your new product with another new product.

I don't agree.
Even if new MBPs have Optimus, Apple won't make a big deal of it and it will not be regarded as something important for sales. Don't expect an "Optimus Inside" badge.

I wouldn't want an i7 in my MacBook; currently they only work when tethered to a power outlet, unless you're fine with a 1 hour battery life. (e.g. there is no mobile version of the i7 yet)

I don't think Apple would release an MBP with a battery life of 1 hour, do you? I wouldn't be surprised if they managed to keep the battery life close to what it is now.

More on Optimus from Xbitlabs - its set to launch Feb 9, maybe we see MBPs Wednesday?

Why would someone use this in a i3/i5/i7 set-up? Looks useful for CoreDuo architecture. However, IGP would seem to imply that graphics controller is integrated with the memory controller. Since the memory controller is integrated into the chip being benchmarked here, that doesn't make sense.

One of the things mentioned is a reference to having two different drivers (Intel+Nvidia) in Windows 7,

Why isn't two different drivers: Nvidia GPU1 and Nvidia GPU2? It just says two. Not two completely different vendors.
Or should to substantively different Nvidia GPUs use exactly the same driver?

The previous versions of the Nvidia technology ( Hybrid Graphcs , Hybrid SLI were all Nvidia to Nvidia combinations). Seems like a much bigger leap for a technology that the vendor doesn't control ( or at very least likely to have early access too. Intel has been shipping pre-productions versions of Arrandale GPUs so Nvidia can figure them out.... Really? ).

I had heard a lot of OEM griping about making sure the Intel GPU in the Arrandale was switchable because they didn't believe in Intel's ability to create a quality GPU.

I can imagine some folks want to be able to turn off the Arrandale IGP if they are not using it; just going to use the discrete chip on the PCI-e link. That may not lead to "seemless" switch though. More like the current MacBookPro switch and reboot.

It really depends on how different the Optimus will be from the current hybrid technology. No one other than Nvidia and Apple would know at this point. There's hope that the Optimus could offer SLI-config, where both the gpus could be run at the same time to "optimize" graphics performance (MBPs did not offer this feature before, and there have always been microstuttering issues on PC laptops which offered it). Perhaps, Steve Jobs was referring to this as taking "macs to the next level."

I'm also surprised that people aren't talking about how impressive the leak results actually are. Compare similar laptops with core i7s, and you'd be shocked to see that the MBP 6,1 leak is faster than most. It scored 300 points higher than quad core i7 dell studio xp 16s, and over 1,000 pts above the new Sony Vaio Fs (also quad core i7s)

I was looking forward to the badge...

You can easily tell that both of those are NOT the new MBPs lol but it does seem pretty easy to fake the leak now. I want to believe that it wasn't fake though.
I hope the original leak wasn't fake either. I just sold my MacBook Pro so I need the new ones to come out FAST!

Is there any indication or alloted time at macworld to indicate a macbook refresh or important announcment?

Windows PCs have that for 2 years now, its called Geforce Boost.

They are the exact same chips used since January, and will perform exactly same.
If you are comparing Geekbench Windows vs OS X scores, they are not meant to be comparable.

No. Apple is not participating at all. If they wanted to make an announcement it would be independent of MWSF. The only benefit would be the added impact of it happening during MWSF while the assembled masses would go into a frenzy.

Not to sound petty but i can't believe i was seriously thinking my 13" MacBook Pro will be obselete when the i7 comes out. Those scores are attrocious considering my 2.53GHz has a score of 3475 and thats a p8700 chip.

Yeah but if has exhibited microstuttering problems then

"It is seamless and transparent to the user. "
(http://blogs.nvidia.com/ntersect/2010/01/new-nvidia-optimus-primer.html) wasn't true before and would be now.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/hybridsli_notebook.html

so if with the older tech there was a perceptible "shifting of gears". You could see/feel the "gears" shift into and out of these modes. If Optimus made it so that couldn't see/feel the gear shifting. When need power it is "instantly" there. When shift down; no artifacts (other than perhaps fan slowing down).

They also might do something akin to Intel's "Turbo Boost Technology". You could have a cores spin up/down based on load. So perhaps the discrete chip has multiple gears too. Do a little bit of 3D and it comes on half way. Go whole hog and then the reach max power drain. In short, you be going from a 2 speed transmission to perhaps a 4 speed ( or a more fluid speed ) transmission.

my 2007 santa rosa 2.2 ghz white macbook scores around 3100 on geekbench. Released June 2007

So would they just literally advertise it online and just one day soon, say here it is..like wouldnt a press release or conference need to be held.. :apple:

Yep, it'll just show up online at Apple.com and no, they wouldn't need a press conference or Keynote to announce it. The new iMacs just showed up online with no fanfare or press conference.

but they do get a video :)

you should do some research, the current 17" mbp has 6mb L2 cache not L3....very big difference.

more cache does not mean better.

Just like GHz, the 2.8 core 2 duo is "faster" than the i7. I agree, people really should research :p.

Macmall is back up! with price cuts on the MBP's for up to $199. This sale ends on the 15!
Edit: Eric S. beat me to it haha
So a possible Feb 16 update?

It's a wild guess, but I like that assumption. February 16 would be perfect. It would give me tons of time to set it up and start using it before the iPad comes out (I'd rather not have to clear my iPhone and iPad to get it to sync with my new computer).
