PC Magazine just reviewed the high-end 15" and declared it the fastest currently shipping laptop - and that was all via tests done with Win 7 via Boot Camp.

No they did not. They declared it to be: "The Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) is the fastest, most technologically advanced laptop to grace our Labs benches." As is usually the case nowadays, they picked the competition carefully to make sure MacBook "wins". With Apple focus on battery life it would actually be stupid to expect MBPs to outperform all other laptops and they do not. Here are few random examples for PCMark Vantage scores:

MBP 15" (2011) - 8315
Asus N53SV (15", mid-range laptop, from $930) - 8735 (link)
Alienware M17x R3 (17", from $1500) - 12700 (link)

As one can see, PC Magazine is, mildly speaking, misleading its readers.

No... he or she fails...
Apple is first with the new generation.

It was of course a rhetorical question. This site is full of fail. I even saw someone say Sandy Bridge was just C2D with clever marketing and a new badge.

The mind boggles.

I am not commenting about PC magazine which sux, but did you actually LOOK at the screenshots on that alienware pc? No wonder it's so cheap. It's a BRICK

It's a gaming laptop. Do you expect a gamer to prefer slick design?

A gamer wanting or not wanting this laptop has nothing to do with my observation that it's cheap and a brick. I really don't care what gamers want.

These new mobile processors are great. I was going to get a Sager with one of the top end chips, but decided to build a powerful desktop(i7 2600k overclocked at 4.8 Ghz) for video editing and an ultra portable laptop for my on the go stuff instead. Both cost less than the lowly 13" Macbook Pro. The price on these Macbook Pros are just crazy, but they've always been that way. I still can't believe they don't have better screens.

I see, still a great deal!

But I think I'll start with the default apple HD and maybe change to the hybrid later on.

But still my question is, which one to choose, the 500/7200rpm or the 750/5400 rpm ?

thanks in advance!

go with the slower one, when you get the mbp take out the HDD, throw it away and get a 240GB sandforce SSD or a 256GB Marvel controled SSD

I want 15.9" display with 1900x1200 on the 15-inch model.

its a 15.6" 1920x1080p like every other higher end 15" notebook with full HD

have you felt the heat output of a gaming laptop at idle? the fans are OFF because the heatsinks and pipes are so big, gaming laptops are properly cooled while offering insane mobile performance in all apects, not the kind BS performance apple gives you for the money, seriously a low end ati card that slower in some ways than the gt335? and costs more? HA

Ah, thought you ment the base model which is 100 more for those two options.

That drive I linked is a hybrid SSD/regular. Has 4gigs of SSD memory.

they are also all defective, take a look at the forums with people complaining about data loss on those SSD/HDD hybrids, even worse if you run OSX on it

G53JW
16GB Ram clocked at 1407MHz
dual OCZ Vertex 2 SSDs 120x2
GTX460 1.5GB
15.6" FULL HD 1080p screen

the new G53SV has a sandybridge CPU which should blow everything away, im thinking at least 14000+

Apple is first with the new generation.

They've been using Quad Sandy Bridge for a while, you sure ???

you fanboys are so ignorant its laughable, yes apple is the only one with new tech

this Asus N53SV doesnt exist at ALL even though it was reviewed in JAN with a SB CPU

these retarded clowns, how the eff can that macbook with a garbage video card outperform a clevo laptop equipped with A gtx485 2gb VIDEO CARD?
the clevo has the following

Intel® Core™ i7-2920XM Processor Extreme Edition (2.50GHz), 8MB L3 Cache, FCPGA10/Socket G2
16GB of DDR3 1333MHZ
NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 485M GPU 2GB Video ram
Solidstate drive of your choice (people usually go with the marvel controled C300)

It's fugly and a brick. Go buy one if you like it. Why are you even here if you think Apple gives you BS of any kind. You are only wasting your own time. Now that is funny:)

yes lets change the subject to looks so its opinion only, i think f117 stealth fighter looks with rubberized texture looks best, i guess my laptop wins then in both performance and looks.
