... ebay isn't the best place to purchase delicate items like laptops...

very true, now wise at all even if you pay a little less.
things like that apple takes care of you when you buy from them. heck yesterday i got a new iphone 2g because my touch screen didnt work after more then a year and i didnt have warranty but i went to the apple store and walla! they gave me a new iphone and they said we want to keep our customers happy. i didnt buy it from apple.com
good for me no? :D :D

on one hand if you pay 2 grand for a laptop yo udo want perfection.
on the other, a thread I read somewhere where a guy returned 3 notebooks for various reasons like an eyelash, and one or 2 dead pixels.

so while to some degree I think returns are ok, some people are overboard about it.

But, the truth here isn't that Apple denied repair. The owner should have made an appointment online. Anyone that has been to an Apple store realizes that an appointment is required by everyone. They are just too busy to handle things like this. The other problem is you will be getting a refurbished MBP when you exchange it via warranty. I just got my iPhone swapped out today... it looks like new but I know it's refurbished. It came out of plain box not off the shelf in a new box.

I really think you need to go back to the seller. He sold you the damaged product. I don't think Apple is responsible or liable. They didn't sell you the damaged product. AND, this is not a warranty issue. This could have happened by the reseller even though it doesn't seem like it to you. This again is the problem with resellers... they have nearly no care in the world once the transaction is complete. It will take one really great reseller to accept this return, plastic seal or not. I would love to know if that happens.

Please tell us how this turns out. I am very hopeful you get a BRAND NEW MBP. You paid for one and you deserve one, but you deserve it from the reseller and not Apple. They are not getting it in a sealed box and they don't know that you didn't drop it or bump it accidentally even with plastic on.

If it doesn't work out, it's a tiny very minor scratch. I have a bigger one on my MB that I bought brand new from Apple at the store the week it was released. It's not a ding but a surface scratch that is merely a place where the satin finish is missing and it's just shiny aluminum in the spot. I stomached it but it sucks! Just too lazy and excited to return it. I just wanted to get at it! A 30 minute drive to the Apple store (ok, 15 mins each way).

Best wishes.

Thanks Scottsdale. It is good to know people are still taking the time to read about my issue. TBH I have come to terms with it all now and as you just put it "stomach it". I almost feel better that my chipped shinny spot is on a corner edge, less noticeable I suppose, BUT even so!

I would be interested to know how many out the box corner chips there are lurking around? As I already pointed out, it seemed at least two of the display models had a very similar issue. Of course I was unable to determine whether this was shop damage or out the box damage. Just seems too coincidental! Perhaps a common manufacturing fault?

Ah well at least everything else seems to be in a good working order.. for now!

No, in all honesty chips aside. This new machine is great. Thoroughly happy right now.

oh my god .. It's just a small dent !
Just use it! Why people OCD about apple products ?
They are not premium products it used to be . It's consumer products just use it and break that seal rght now

If you purchased a brand new car, straight from the showroom and later you've discovered minor dents and possible scratches on the body work. Would you just keep it, continue to use it and not make a fuss? Cause I jolly won't. If it was me, I would be right back making a complaint. It might be that $2,000 ain't much for you but for some people it's a year of savings.

To those saying 'just live with it' - Apple will deny you repair of other future issues because 'you dropped it' and prove their case by noting the dent/sratch/whatever. DEFINATELY complain.

/edit: oops dead thread... google ranks it very high...

When I got my iPad it had a teeny tiny ding in the corner. Apple just told me that it is like that due to the manufacturing process and every iPad is different.

Small world BTW :D
