New Macbook Pro delivery & box is damaged

I guess if you've been bitten by this before it makes you a little bit paranoid.
I'd rather just ship it back than deal with this later once I'm up and running working on this machine.
And really UPS shouldn't be throwing around a £3000 laptop.

If you are not in desperate need of this laptop, send it back! One day you might sell and the bashed laptop box would put me off for sure.

Have you ever been inside one of those facilities? You would be amazed that some of the boxes and items inside remain intact 🙂
I would of just kept it. You have the same 1 year warranty and if something was wrong due to the box damage you would know almost right away. You are definitely being too paranoid and finicky about the situation. You have a better chance of getting an even more dinged up box for your replacement than you would having a problem with the original one. Aside from the brown box, then the apple box, the laptop sits another 2 inches or so towards the middle of the box from the edges. Having a brother who works for UPS, boxes that seems to be in perfect shape get tossed around more than damaged ones but just don't happen to land on the corners and take impact drops just as bad.

Peace of mind goes a long way, and you're not at peace with the decision, then yes by all means return it.

Actually, it appears that the inner ("pretty") box also was dinged, based on the photo posted earlier.
When I ordered an iMac last year, the outer brown cardboard shipping box fit exactly around the inner retail box, with no additional padding between the two. Not sure if laptops are shipped the same way.

Nice packaging. Everything is nicely padded. Notice that the box is designed so the inner macbook box slides into the slot created by the folded cardboard on the sides and never touches the top or the bottom. This is done to ensure there is an air gap between the inner white macbook box and the sides. The air in this gap is the padding. You can also see how they designed the box to trap air above and below the MBP white box on all sides. The result is this is like having those plastic air bladder bags between all sides of the cardboard box and the white box.
And if you open the white box notice how everything in there is suspended in plastic trays to further ensure impact energy from the sides are not transmitted to the macbook.
There is a lot of engineering in modern packaged designed to handle klutzy and uncaring shippers.

Yeah, the tab at the top, which is currently up, folds over when closed to protect that end as well and as you say adds an air cushion there as well. Between that and the laptop being suspended inside the white box by the plastic tray, it can probably withstand a fair amount of abuse by careless handlers.
It is a little odd though that the outside box does not say “fragile” or “handle with care” or have any indication that there is a fragile device like a computer inside, other than the Lithium Battery label. Though I am fairly certain it would not make a difference in how it was handled if it did.

I think "fragile", "handle with car", are so overused that shippers don't even read them. Or if they do read them they have no impact like you said.

Since I've moved to my new place I would come home to find so many of my deliveries with the boxes damaged. Luckily the contents inside were ok. I didn't want to take the chance with my MBP order so I decided to just pick it up at a local store. It's a pain in the butt, but I thought shipping it to the store is probably better since the delivery person wouldn't want to damage something that is being delivered to the actual Apple Store.
If it was damaged, the Apple rep would see it and make a note of it if I have any issues. Just got the email that the machine arrived today. One day early! So I'll be picking it up after work. Luckily I carried my larger backpack with me today in preparation.
