Of course they lack optical out. I can't wait for the next revelation where there's no battery inside and that too must be connected by dongle.
They have practically done this already with the iPhone, walk down any street and you see people with the phone plugged into a battery pack!

LOL, what a disaster the new MacBook has become. Like someone mentioned in this thread, it's time to start looking and Windows laptops.

I can't wait to see how Apple manages to botch their desktops even more.

Removing the CD drive freed some space on a portable device. What is the benefit of the lack of optical out? For you personally?

I argue that removal of optical out is gain for no-one (except apple making more profit, provided that customers don't go elsewhere due to it) and a loss for some customers.

BTW, according to your logic, Apple itself should not exist at all. There was a long period of time when it's computers were used by <5% of the market (and even today it's not the majority of the market who uses/needs them).

You can't be serious. Are you actually suggesting someone might switch to Windows just because there's no longer an optical output on the MacBook anymore?

Do PCs even offer optical output in a standard configuration?

I used optical with my DAC but it also has USB input and I never noticed a difference in sound quality. I mainly used optical to free up a USB port but that won't seem to matter as much. It is disappointing that they removed a feature, though. And no uses it so they removed it? Guess that's why they removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 too--because no one ever used it.

The magic about the PC market is there isn't a "standard configuration". There are thousands of options, so you can get something that suits your needs perfectly.

It's why this MacBook Pro update hurts so much: when there's only one meal on the menu, it better be a good one. Windows is like an entire supermarket.

I was wondering about this when I was looking at the LG 5K monitor. How do people normally connect their external speakers without TOSLINK? Is there a USB-C to TOSLINK option?

The sad thing is that Apple is digging its grave (or rather the grave for the Mac). By removing distinctive features from the Mac it will be extremely easy for customers to switch to PCs... why stay once there is no difference anyway?

Unlike the niche few % apple is "trying" to get rid off, the majority Apple claims to serve are not loyal Apple fans, they will leave the minite there is something more interesting on the market.

More than 99% of the people upset with this move merely see "Apple" and "removed" on the same sentence and hop on the bandwagon of annual complaining about the new product.

I guess if that were the case and go by your logic, we would still be using floppy disk and watch VHS tapes. Technology has to push forward.

As far as SD cards....yes blame the camera companies. In a world where I can transfer a batch of photos wirelessly to my mac using airdrop in a matter of seconds.....I absolutely blame the camera companies. Thankfully more and more cameras are gaining wireless but are very much behind.

Which point and shoot camera do you use? Pros shoot in RAW and each file size is huge. When they transfer files it's usually in GB. It would take half a day to do that over wifi. The conversation is about a pro machine and there are various professions that Apple has managed to disappoint. Apple is expecting pros to keep up with their pace of change but there are pros who have invested thousands of dollars for their gear and wouldn't want to change it.

If you are talking about the masses then sure but the frustration is that if no category of pro is happy then why brand this as a pro. Make some other pro machine.

Also the new Mac might look great but you have to carry a dongle bag at least for the next couple of years which is like going to a broadway show in a shiny tux and carrying a doggie bag for dinner.

Maybe, but this isn't something that most people used--for those of us who consider ourselves audiophiles, this is a disappointing removal of a niche function that I was glad the MBP had (and most PCs don't). I didn't even know my last MBP had optical out at first--it was so undermentioned.

Wasn't planning on buying one but would have considered it as a candidate for my future laptop if the price was not so high.

I have never used optical. However some people do. So I won't be selfish and say "I don't use it so I don't care, remove it".

It reminds me of the debate about an LED notification light in an iPhone. I would love one, but because others wouldn't use it they hope Apple would never implement it. Why be so selfish? It being their would not affect them if Apple makes it optional to turn on or off.

We live in a selfish world though so why an I expecting better.

Lol okay so SD cards is old tech too right? Lightning portis old tech too don't you agree? Should be replaced with USB C.

Absolutely lightning needs to go away. The moment Apple decided to go with USB-C, they should've done the same with iOS devices. They did so with the Apple TV.

SD might be around an it longer due to its size and portability.

The "problem" with SD was that you could use it to expand storage witout Apple collecting premium of the ridiculously priced SSD upgrades. ;-)
