I would love to have the 14" form factor in a thinner design. Since it's unlikely that Apple would release a third size option for Air, I would gladly welcome (and buy) a thinner pro version.
I would actually prefer Apple went the other way.

Launch a MBP 18" with a M* Max as default, and a down-clocked M* Ultra with some beefy cooling. :)

Though I haven’t changed the software I use, my M1Pro has slowed way down. Spinning beachballs, especially when accessing files, like the days of an Intel.

Also, Mail app needs to be restarted every time I unlock my computer and sometimes even later. Preview app randomly hides the window when I click on certain tabs. Preview also doesn’t necessarily show me the window after I double click a file. I have to locate the window. After some change to the font manager API last fall, I cannot get any old excel files to open and few word files. It’s become a CF of crashes and delays.

The new passwords app isn’t as good as the old keychain, and now if I try to allow passwords to generate a new password, it freezes safari and I have to restart it. Have to go into the password app, create a password there, copy it, paste it into safari.

The list of issues goes on and on. It’s tiresome.

Let me guess, you bought a box with only base RAM. And now you are surprised that the Mac loses performance in ~4 years...

if it still ships with a hdmi port just to keep it fat and ugly, bravo apple. another 5yrs of trash going forward.

it must become as thin as the air is now. and it must get rid of the ****** fan.

Still possible for it to launch in November. Think upcoming update will be a minor one. Want to see cellular connectivity on Mac. If it happens, hopefully it will not be exclusive to the Pro only. Would like some new color for MacBook Pro.

I'm still using a 2017 15" macbook pro and thanks to OCLP with Sequoia. I'm not using it for pro tasks though, because I've a 13" 2in1 Lenovo work laptop, which is quite portable. I still want to renew my mac but the I simply don't like the design of the MacBook Pro family. Especially:

- Black background on the keyboard
- Full size F keys. I'm also not fan of touchbar, but those are ridiculous, like giant Esc key
- Notch
- The sharp air ventilation openings on the side of the laptop. I understand it has to be ventilated, but I really would like to hold the machine as smooth as possible.

On the other hand, I simply don't expect a redesign this year (acc. to rumors at least). And never ever first revision of a redesign :)

After reading my post again, maybe I really should consider m4 pro mac mini :)

As a graphic designer, I have just upgraded my MacBook Pro M1 Pro to M4 Max. Honestly, except the darker color and more fan noise (can be SW reduced) I can barely see a difference. For my workflow the processors speed is obviously not a case anymore. I changed the computer just because of a HUGE discount and Thunderbolt 5 ports that could be necessary for some future accessories. So I don't mind if M5 or M6 will be even more powerful, the news about touchscreen and slimmer design for Pro machines confirm me that it's a good idea to stay with current generations

November makes sense. Supposedly the M5 chips have been in production for a while. They should probably release something with them soon so their chip supply doesn’t pileup too high.

Why? Just get a MacBook Air. The MacBook Air is already thermally-throttled with its iPad-tier CPU. Don’t need a MacBook Pro without a fan.

I don't mind if they innovate a bit more with the Air.. A touch screen on the air would make sense for the consumer but it would eat into Apple's margins ITO the iPad.

But please, don't compromise on the pro. My M1Max I bought second hand has been the best laptop I've ever owned.
It's battery lasts a whole day of solid use, it's screen is glorious, the sound feels bigger than should be possible from a laptop and the keyboard has been perfect. The HDMI port has helped me out twice and the all USB-C is completely fine since I no longer own any USB-A devices. It really is almost perfect.

In the two years I've used it, the only gripes I have that immediately come to mind are niggling minor complaints:

  • Why can't you make the SD card captive instead of having the card stick out precariously so I can't permanently mount a 2TB card in there... (maybe that's the reason)
  • The front edge of the laptop is sharp. Please round it off a bit. it hurts after a while, so I have to use a folded handkerchief as a cushion in the summer when I'm wearing short sleeves.

as long as it's an option, line nanotexture, everyone will be happy. Having said that, if not, I have a very simple solution, just use as you do now, without touching the screen.
Yah but touch screens are significantly more expensive than their non touchscreen counterparts... Then add the Apple Touch Tax on top of that and you find you're now paying an ADDITIONAL $200 (apple's favourite step up) for something you'll never use.

Also, does anyone believe that apple would release a pro tier machine in, say March and then another entire generation (M6) in Winter? Though not entirely without precedent, it seems a little unlikely to me... Unless the M5 series are actually delayed and they were supposed to launch this autumn...

We'll only get something meaningfully new and useful if Tim Cook retires.
He seems too busy handing the trillions of dollars and giving out gold bars to despots to reduce tariffs to focus on the product.

Also, while CFExpress is indeed the "pro" format, its use is far, far lower than the all but ubiquitous SD format. SD Express, maybe? But I don't see apple adding a port for a format of limited use to their machines.

Dear Apple: I don't want thinner MacBook Pros. I don't want a touch screen. It's a Pro machine. I want upgradable memory, storage, and lots of ports without needing to buy a damned dock. I want high durability and beefy cooling systems. I'm using it as a portable workstation, not using it as a laptop.

If you're expecting me to pay $3500+ for the high end CPU to do work with, then you better make it worth my money. I was going to buy one, but, meh, for that kinda scratch, I can buy a real workstation replacement machine and run Linux.
Forget upgradable memory. With others, I agree.

Is OLED supposed to be an upgrade? I think Razer sells Mini LED at a higher price than their OLED version.

M1 Max to M6 (Pro is probably enough for me, I just hope it finally supports more than 2 external displays in addition to the internal one) sounds good to me with all the other upgrades (mainly OLED and mobile data).

I only hope apple has been keeping track of how much the HDMI and SD card slots get used on the Macbook Pros and realize no one uses them and goes back to just USB C ports, far more useful to have an extra USB C that can do everything.

I'm still using a MacBook Pro from 2018 (with Touch Bar). The keyboard and the battery are barely hanging on anymore. I could wait until January 2026 at the most, but not March 2026. I had hoped the M5 MBPs would come by November. Not sure what to do anymore. Buy a 2024 MBP M4 Pro which is already 1 year old, or wait for the 2026 MBP M5 Pro... Hm...
So you held on to your Intel MacBook Pro for 8 years, but dammit those two extra months in 2026 are just one step too far for you, eh? You just pointed out not waiting those two months requires getting a one year old laptop—where’s the logic here? I mean given how long you’ve already held on, what’s even another year for a complete redesign?

If you’re the type to buy a laptop and hold on to it for 8 years, which is awesome honestly, then you should wait for the M6 since Apple always refreshes the design every five years. You’re at the tail end of the current design, makes no sense to buy an M5.

I use the HDMI port regularly both at work and for personal use. Many others do as well.

As it is for many more users. Curiously the HW performance increases outmatches the increased in SW demands. The longevity of devices is nowadays incredible. I remember when a PC lasted max 3 years and then it was too slow. Not happening today.

My 2020 iMac is still good and will be until Apple kills it by refusing to do security updates. I have no clue when to replace my M1 Pro MBP at work. It does the job perfectly fine.

I have never had to do that in 20 years of using OSX. Reinstall OS, yes. Set up as new? What is this, Windows?
I did it multiple times. Set up as new installation, do not transfer anything from old installation. Have you REALLY used OSX?

there are FOUR usb-c ports on Macbook Pro, how much you really need? HDMI is used for presentations. Maybe you have not made a presenation in your life but others, surprisingy, do.
