The pro machines are already plenty thin, nobody is asking to make them thinner. As someone else said, beef them up as PRO machines, add more ports, upgrade options, and capabilities that Pros can use. The thin MacBook is already accomplished with the Air.
MBP has the right amount of ports and capabilities for most professionals. What exactly are you referring about?

In terms of upgrade options, I think those days are over in terms of Integrated Silicon on Chip design of the AS. However ssd upgradability could be a great thing.

The nice thing about Thunderbolt/USB-C ports is that they can become any port... power input, HDMI, USB-A, DisplayPort, etc... with the help of an adaptor or cable.

But HDMI ports can only be HDMI ports. Same for USB-A ports.

I know we're supposed to hate the "dongle life" but I like having ports that can do multiple things if needed.

LOL there’s been rumours of cellular connectivity in MacBooks for 20+ years. Never going to happen, especially since they started selling phones.

Mark never knows anything. Just throwing darts.

I'm not a huge fan of Gurman, but this is patently false. He breaks a lot of Apple news, quite likely more than anyone else.

My bigger issue is that he never acknowledges, admits, or explains when he gets something wrong, which happens frequently, and causes us all to wonder when something is a reliable rumor and when it's total nonsense.

Dear Apple: I don't want thinner MacBook Pros. I don't want a touch screen. It's a Pro machine. I want upgradable memory, storage, and lots of ports without needing to buy a damned dock. I want high durability and beefy cooling systems. I'm using it as a portable workstation, not using it as a laptop.

If you're expecting me to pay $3500+ for the high end CPU to do work with, then you better make it worth my money. I was going to buy one, but, meh, for that kinda scratch, I can buy a real workstation replacement machine and run Linux.
I’m with you man, but let’s be real 2012 year will never come back …

I'd start a debate about the debatable MacRumours' choice of a partnership with Bloomberg and Gurman for a paid newsletter, if people here did not appear to unanimously believe that Gurman predicts the future of Apple by reading the entrails of pigeons he hits with his car.

I WAS waiting for the M5 MBP’s to upgrade my M1 but decided to pull the trigger on the 16” M4 instead. You can find them for a discount from time to time on major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.

I understand the want to have the latest thing. I’m right there with you. But I looked at how and what I use my laptop for and quite frankly, the M4 is overkill for my workflow for at least 2 years out. I don’t regret getting it even if the M5’s come out in November. Let alone next year. It will serve me well for years.

I’m not a big fan of touch screen laptops. If someone tries to touch the screen of my laptop I have a tendency to swat their hand away. Smudges on the screen drive me nuts. Touching that on purpose? OMG. No way.

IMHO the current form factor of the MBP is an excellent execution of technology and industrial design. It strikes a balance between utility and style. It feels good in the hands and quality made. This is my second one (M1, now M4) and I’ve been pleased with both.

When Apple decides to refresh or update the design of the MBP they would be wise to take an evolutionary beat as opposed to revamping the whole design. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. We’ve seen updating for the sake of change out of Apple in the past. The results are usually mixed.

Wait a Min.

So an M5 MacBook Air and Pro will only be around for 6 months before they make a new MacBook Pro M6 by the end of next year.

Something doesn't add up. It make much more sense to have M5 in November.

I love my surface pros. I would go nuts for a touchscreen Mac with a detachable keyboard. iPadOS is simply too limited for my needs.
Do not even think about convincing Apple to make the display detectable, because knowing Apple, if they did that they'd do something crazy like get rid of the one with a non-detectable keyboard.

Why are you saying 6 months? If M5 came in January and M6 came in October that would be 9 or 10 months. The argument for this is Apple did it before:
Apple released M2-Series MacBook Pros in January 2023, followed by M3-Series MacBook Pros in November of that year.
The article doesn't mention MacBook Air.

I’m in more or less the same situation (2017 MBP) mine getting long in the tooth. M4 already a year old. They launch M5 I’ll bite. Another year is too long. Also I believe in buy when you have to upgrade and not worry about « Mac Rumors » Lol
Just changed the battery in mine and it's still humming a long nicely! Photo editing, a bit of fusion, I'm surprised at how well it's still doing!

I've used two touchscreen laptops at work and I found myself slapping hands away too, even though the machines were designed specifically for touch 🤣 Like you, I hate a smudgy screen.

Never mind those monsters - I want to see the A19 MacBook - bet it’s exactly the one to sell and break the tariff barrier for lots of consumers

Touch Bar was a complete failure. Why on earth would they consider a touch screen?

I don't understand why people want both a very high quality screen AND a touchscreen, which will be constantly with smudges. Why a touchscreen on a laptop to begin with?
Meh.
Whatever.

I've had Windows laptops for both work and home use with touchscreens and honestly I dont see the attraction... except to finger prints ;)

Windows is not great for touch. Unless you are using in tablet only mode without a keyboard. And then it's just a slightly clunky iPad with quirks.

Pick the tool to do the job you want not force interaction on things not primarily designed for it.

Speaking personally, I've had Windows laptops that have had a touchscreen and I've really enjoyed being able to scroll through a webpage with my thumb at the side of the screen. Being able to easily sign secure documents with my finger tip has been useful too (ie I actually did a decent version of my signature). Small use cases I now, but I still found them nice to have.

I would imagine the extra cost to build a touchscreen into a laptop is minimal now with the tech being mature, so it's not going to be adding a huge amount to the purchase price. Apple has likely done their research and concluded that enough people would like a touchscreen to make it a worthwhile business decision to employ, along with MacOS becoming more aligned with iPadOS (and vice versa) over the years to make the UX & UI interactions more fluid too.

Most people seem to cope with finger prints on phone and tablet screens okay, I would think the larger part of the Mac buying population will be the same with finger prints on their laptop screen too. Obviously there will some who would prefer a pristine, fingerprint free screen, and that is totally fair enough too :)

To be honest, just like the video functionality in 'stills' cameras. Just don't use it if you don't like/want it.
