Optical vs. non optical fight... go

My thought is that they should start including the external drive for any machine sold without an optical drive.

I am still glad I received mine last week. It has an optical drive, which I need and downgraded it to SnowLeopard right away and it runs like a charm.

Sorry, but I do not come to grips with Versions - maybe I am getting old or have been using computers for too long...
I hate how all the application developers jump at these features to leave you with no choice but to stick with the old and trusted. I have not lost any data due to an application crash in ages, so, sorry there was no problem that needed to be fixed.

I doubt that downgrading will be so easy with the new models (due to lacking drivers in SL).

Ivy Bridge will bring USB3 to the Intel chipsets, correct? Then I'd love to see a MBP with USB3, FW800 and Thunderbolt! That would be fantastic.

PS - Why hasn't Apple considered one of those combo eSATA/USB ports that I've seen on a lot of PC laptops? One of the coolest connectors ever. I just want more high speed port options for sharing a MBP with my custom built PC desktop

Redesign or not, it would be foolish to buy a Macbook Pro or Macbook Air without Ivy Bridge. Particularly the 13" model without a dedicated graphics card. Ivy Bridge will have much better graphics, slightly faster CPU and quite substantially better power consumption.

I really dislike that technology moves so fast nowadays. I guess I just need to learn not be concerned with having the latest and greatest.

So they should be bulky and heavy for no reason other than to make them "feel" powerful?

No thanks.

No not bulky and heavy. Not as thin as macbook airs are now but still thin and without the tapered design. I want them to be as light as they can get but not feel like I could snap it if I wanted to.

All I can think of when someone says Mac Book Pro any more is how bad my WiFi drops are on this thing (MacBookPro 7,1) that I haven't even had for a year yet. I am amazed at myself. I'm the eternal optimist and can find the ray of sunshine on the worst of days, but my experience with this machine has traumatized me. My fixes and refixes resemble cult-like religious rituals at this point. If someone gets the update and says their WiFi is solid like a piece of fiberoptic then maybe I'll go read the new specs. Otherwise, I pass. You can find me surfing on an MBA wherever I feel like sitting at a given moment (or you can find me surfing on this dog attached to an ethernet cable 15 feet away from the router.

I am still all for having an optical drive. I really do not need my laptop to be light. I use my optical drive a lot. I'm one of the few people left who still purchase physical CDs.

Why? Just buy the cheap ass thing if you really need it so bad.

It's funny Apple was so successful with the iMac at the desktop that includes all things needed in a single piece of computing machinery - whereas PCs tended to be cluttered with cables and appendices.
Now you are proposing the opposite directions for mobile computing - I don't find this appealing.

because many people still use them, and moving it external would give everyone what they want (kinda). you could still have it for software installs, burn disks and such, but don't have to have it taking up space all the time. Also, I think it should be included unless they are going to use that extra space for something other than just making the machine thinner, the size is already at a point where it doesn't bother me so if they take the optical away I want it (the space) used for something productive. If they just shrink the machine then they should be at least giving an external drive with it.

Constrained. That's a word one doesn't often encounter when referring to the supply of computers.

I would have understood "Supply of ... is constrained." The computers are not constrained, only the supply.

Apple still cares about Mac?

Of course Apple still cares about the Mac.

That's why Consumer Reports named the Mac as the best Windows PC.

That's why the Mac once again had the largest market share gain of any computer made for the quarter.

That's why people that have PCs crammed down their throats at work are switching to Macs at home.

I'm with ya, I still purchase Disks and burn disks, and use disks almost daily (CD's, DVD's, and would add more Blu-Rays if machines came with them)

The point is that most people don't need them anymore, certainly not while traveling or on a couch. This "let's never take anything out" mentality is the reason many PC notebooks are over 1.25" thick, and have VGA ports.

here's to wishful thinking...

Since when are Macs codenamed with the letter-number-letter format? I thought that was only for iOS devices, starting with the original iPhone (m68ap). Are they bringing this over to Macs now? I don't believe there are any current products referred to as k91, k92, etc.

Shouldn't this new MBP be called MacBookPro6,4 or something?

The MacBook Pro model numbers usually have been prefixed with a MA/MB/MC so this time using a "K" is not just unusual but a first for the MBP lineup. You can see the previous MBP model #'s here.

Ivy Bridge promises dramatic increases in battery life, making it a good time for a redesign.

That'll be one extremely popular MBP for sure.

Same analyst who predicted a drastically redesigned iPhone 5.

LOL!

Redesign or not, it would be foolish to buy a Macbook Pro or Macbook Air without Ivy Bridge.

All I want is a quad core 13" MacBook Pro.

I guess you'll both be waiting another 6-8 months to pick up your next MBP then. ;)
