It's funny Apple was so successful with the iMac at the desktop that includes all things needed in a single piece of computing machinery - whereas PCs tended to be cluttered with cables and appendices.
Now you are proposing the opposite directions for mobile computing - I don't find this appealing.

The point is that most people don't need them anymore, certainly not while traveling or on a couch. This "let's never take anything out" mentality is the reason many PC notebooks are over 1.25" thick, and have VGA ports.

I agree with a lot of what you say but do many overhead projectors are still VGA. But I guess that's what all those adapters are for and just a thunderbolt port.

Well, you're part right, but the main reason for the VGA port sticking around is that most conference rooms with projectors use... VGA!

Right!!! I'm a part time lecturer and a full time phd student. Without VGA I'd never be able to present anything. Ha.

Hehehe so glad I don't buy the expensive ones from apple but the dangling cord doesn't look sexy anymore. Ha. How about wireless video transmission?

Very true. Hence Lenovos, for example, have them. VGA still has its use.. and it's actually a very capable interface. 2048x1536 on a 19" screen, anyone?

Just saw this news story. I'd be all over dedicated graphics in the 13", either way i'll probably get one to replace my ageing white macbook.

Probably unlikely however!

Apple store currently down .... hopefully to add new Macbook Pro's! :)

Back online, with no news apparently... :(:( I need a MBP!!! Hurry up :apple:!

Ok wouldn't be a major upgrade but I don't want to buy one today and find and upgraded proc tomorrow....

Man, I feel your pain! Me=exactly the same predicament!

Thailand flooding impact?

This article gives me concern:

Thailand flooding could impact hard drive, Mac production http://j.mp/oeO0k7

Of course, my biggest concern is for safety of the people there! At the same time I've been eager to buy Macbook Pro 17', and I'd hate to miss this Refreshed Model. Hopefully this Thailand situation has no impact on MBPs... Obviously nothing is for sure till Apple announces it officially on their site. Then it's "Available in xxxx days"...

It's really frustrating, but I can't blame Apple for doing business that way! I suspect they have many more justifications for their secrecy than anyone can even imagine! To run such a Giant Company on such huge international scale is breathtaking! Bravo, Apple!

I can't wait to buy this Customized MBP 17', iPhone 4S 64 GB, Thunderbolt Monitor and a bunch of other stuff as part of this Upgrade! I need it soon! Can't wait for maybe Spring-June MBP!!! Hey, everything we buy is already outdated 1 year later. I also suspect that buying the Refreshes in the Autumn is safer, cause whatever the problems were in the initial Spring Introduction get fixed!

I wish all Macs, and iOS Devices were Anti-glare Matte Screen, at least as an option!

Next year I'll add iPad 3! Hopefully it will end Kindle's Outdoor Reading advantage!

Thanks In Advance, Apple!

R.I.P. and Thank You, Mr. Steve Jobs!

 A Proud Apple User, I am!

MBA in name across the board, eventually...

I am confident in 2-3 refreshes, there will be 15" and 17" air-like macbook. and the air-like series 11, 13, 15, 17 will become Apple's primary notebook, and they will probably just call them "MacBooks" since when they announced the redesign they called it the future of MacBooks.

Then Apple will have an alternative that won't be as popular that will be thicker, and simply just exist for people who want a dedicated GPU. This computer may be called a MacBook Pro maybe not

IMO, I think Apple is aiming to eventually make all of their notebook utilize the MacBook Air form factor by the beginning of 2013, but would retain the designation of MacBook Pro (perhaps MBA Pro?) for the 15" and 17" models that feature more "power user" features than the mainstream 11" and 13" MacBook models targeting entry level and mid-level consumers, while still referring to them all as MBA class notebooks across the board.

The interface may be useful, but that is still not a reason to be stuck in the past and include it in every laptop. As an example, I use floppies from time to time to exchange data will older systems, but it would be unreasonable to expect it to be included in laptops. Therefor an adapter is the reasonable approach to solve interface incompatibilities between generations of hardware.

Anything new on this? Wanna buy the 13" but clearly I should wait. Hopefully a silent update soon.

Don't hold your breath. If you need it now, buy it now.

Highly unlikely Apple would do anything this close to the holiday shopping season - historically they have not.

That's not true...
The new unibody form factor came out 3 years from now.

I know cause I just got my late 2008 MacBook replaced today.

Actually their last 4 updates have been 8 months, 8 months, 10 months, 10 months, including 1 of those coming in October. It has currently been 8 months so I would say either a small bump shortly, or nothing until Q2 2012 for IB. I find it hard to believe they would want to go over a year without any updates though, so a small bump seems likely.

When I said "historically," I meant that Apple has not refreshed an entire line this close to the holiday shopping season. And unibody MacBook Pros have received one update per calendar year: introduced in 2008, refreshed in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

I also suspect the MBP team is working on integrating Ivy Bridge as opposed to reworking existing MBPs for newer Sandy Bridge CPUs. And given the sales success of the existing MBPs, there's little incentive to update them before Ivy Bridge.

Hopes for upgrades.

Sure hope that they switch to better graphic cards. ;):apple:
I nid for both game play and video editing
