Why is everyone so concerned about USB C. This already exists. Cables already exist. For almost any USB item you have, you can already get it in USB C or get the cable for it, I really don't understand all the worry about it. It is so much better than the terrible non reversible ports that have been around forever. There is nothing negative about USB C really. They should DEFINITELY not have both old and new type usb ports on the same machine, if you believe that, please never be an engineer or designer, of any kind. If buying a cable is a huge ordeal for you, then you might worry.

People moan that the MacBook Pro has had the same design since 2012, then presented with a new design, they actually want it to be just like the last one with the same ports and the same thickness - its a never ending cesspit of whinge bag moaners in here who half the time don't even understand what they're complaining about.

MacBook Pro will not be so Pro without the SD card slot, an HDMI port and USB ports. I would like to keep the MagSafe connector cause it has saved my MBP so many times from hitting the floor :(

I am not opposed to USB C, I actually love the idea!! but you can't just expect us professionals to be happy about the removal of all these ports!!

I could imagine Apple just concentrating on the Macbook (the very thing one) and ditch all the rest. It would be... courageous.

Pro Apps for the Mac are not really a thing anymore, there's better stuff out there and it all runs on windows. I personally still like Logic because it comes with everything I "need" already built-in but boy is it buggy. It runs perfectly on the 2012 Macbook Air so the current Macbook should do fine.

Right now Apple is about communicating and consuming media which the iPhone and iPad do well. Personally a Macbook is just more comfortable to use, I can tilt the display at the angle I like, navigation is quick and there's keyboard shortcuts for obscure things I do a lot. Macs will be around for app developers but over time, I think they'll die out.

I use the SD card slot approx 3 times a week... I also regularly use the HDMI out for projectors... and of course I use the plain old regular USB connectors constantly for thumb drives, printers, music gear, connecting my ipad to laptop, etc etc.

And the mag safe has saved my laptop from harm more times than I can count.

If this rumor is true, then Apple will be selling a new machine that does not connect to a single thing I use.

The only good news from this is that the older model will drop in price.

It's an additional point of failure.

As it's been said, your internal SD slot can fail, too. Also, you can carry two, just in case...they're small and cheap and if one fails you still have backup.

Seriously, don't make a big deal out of a non-issue.

going from a 2011 to MAYBE a 2016 MBP, i'll miss the ethernet port more than USB A.

Ahhhh why do I kid myself, I'm gonna wait all this time to see the thing unveiled just to confirm it is under specced and over priced with a **** GPU and decide to go back to a desktop or windows laptop anyway.

And somehow the 2012 version will remain in the line up at $1,000+ dollars.
Believe it or not, they still sell, and I still see lots of them out in the wild. They're easy to spot with all those ports and that SuperDrive slot. It's a decent little laptop for basic computing tasks for someone who decides to join Apple's ecosystem at a limited budget level (I know, I know), complementing their iPhone or iPad, especially if they also require legacy ports and/or an optical drive.

I actually bought one less than a year ago just to tinker for old-time's sake, got the upgraded 2.9GHz i7 processor and then installed 16GB of memory and a Sammy 850 PRO SSD myself. Apple insists you can only do 8GB, but a little research convinced me otherwise, and I can vouch that 16GB works without any issues.

Speed-wise I really don't notice any difference between it and my SSD desktop, although that would probably be debunked with a bench test. Its only practical limitation would be the Intel 4000 graphics, severely lacking for gamers, but for basic day-to-day tasks, this is a non-issue.

It's the shape. I have a TB display at home and the office, then another monitor hooked up to the second TB port on my 2013 rMBP. I don't want another adapter.

Unless there's a new external display released, I'm going to add a TB3 adapter to both of my $100 mDP adapters that connect to the DVI connectors on each of my 30" Cinema Displays and then I'll forget it ever happened and move on with my life with the added bonus that I don't have to look at which direction the USB-C plug is facing ever.

It's really not going to ruin your life. You'll be okay.

Thats a huge backpack and not a small one. I tend to plug my sd card in to my computer at home, not when out.
It just bugs me to remove something that is convenient and being used for something less convenient.

Something less convenient...like...battery? o_O Especially since you plug your sd card in at home? Oh come on, guys.

People for the last four years have survived by leaving a Thunderbolt adapter attached to their Ethernet cable. You will too.

I wouldn't be surprised if there won't be an event. To fill an entire hour with a touch panel and a slightly thinner body is rather...difficult. And no rumors at all point towards anything else, that's in the pipeline.

it will probably be an ipad event

OCTOBER. THIS MONTH. MACBOOK PRO.
--

but seriously, if this year ends without new Macs I'm done with this company.

I'd rather not see a new macbook pro if it comes with the shallow keyboard and only USB-C ports. There's so many things that scream "NOT pro" in that. Then again, it's been an inexpensive year for me. No need to buy a new phone for once and apparently now I don't need to bother with a new laptop either.

Maybe rename that machine to something else and introduce a new Pro model that has an usable keyboard and at least one USB-A and preferably the SD card slot, too. Or some other way to increase your storage. The most important would be the keyboard, though. I'm done with crappy keyboards.

The road to the future has always been paved with expensive dongles.

No, no and no. The stupid ethernet dongle is one dongle too many. Any more and it will stay in the store for me. :p

People still plug directly into printers?? What decade is this.

I really dont think they will have them ready by the end of this month. I mean unless they're just going to update the pro lines on their website.

Right? Why would anyone need 4 USB-C ports. And I would be really bummed if I can't use it with my Thunderbolt Display, like my wife's Macbook.

But..but.. you can buy a dozen different dongles and pretend your machine is an octopus! Wouldn't that be worth it while you fondle that ultrashallow keyboard with no feeling? At least you'd have the OLED panel that provides almost identical feel to your keyboard!

I sit here reading this thread on my last remaining Apple product, a 2011 MBA which i was going to replace with the new rMBP. However if the news about ditching all the ports is true i think ill will be dropping Apple altogether. Apple have really dropped the ball ever since the iPhone took off in popularity. The last decent OS Apple made was Snow Leopard, Finder continues to be a laggy mess on the current Mac OS's. Don't get me wrong i love OSX, i have done for many years but it seems Apple is neglecting it these days. I also love the quality of most Apple hardware, my 2011 MBA still runs like a champ 5 years later, but to drop all the ports on a machine with the "pro" tag is just ridiculous. Damn you Apple!!!

I'm ready to buy my first Mac laptop in years, and first pro portable in even more years.

I want thinness and lightness most of all.

I want speed next (but the current ones are fast enough).

And third, I want legacy ports gone. I plan to keep this thing a while, and delaying the transition doesn't help me. Combine the latest USB and Thubnderbolt in one port, along with DisplayPort and power! (And give me more than one of them, at least on the Pro.)

In other words: You don't want PRO. Go buy the 12" macbook, it's all you need. Everything you describe screams "hipster" rather than "pro".

Thunderbolt 3 would work.

You mean donglerbolt 3? And the DonglHDMI. And whatever else. Macbook Pro -the only 15" machine that requires more than 20" footprint on your desk!

Actually he could buy one TB3 to TB2 adapter and use said Thunderbolt Display as a hub for gigabit Ethernet, three USB-A, FireWire 800, audio, webcam and an additional Thunderbolt 2 port with which you could attach whatever.

But you know, who's counting when you're trying this hard to complain.

You may wanna rethink your statement. How exactly do you connect your DSLRs and mirrorless cameras? And you don't think those usb-c to camera cables or usb-c card readers will come? You really think they're gonna be expensive?

And also, not ALL photographers use SD. Dammit. This argument keeps coming up and yet I know a whole bunch of photographers (pro and amateur) who liberately still use CF.

If getting rid of the SD slot means bigger battery, hell yeah, please. I can't even remember the last time I used the SD slot on my MBA ...

If and if.. you do know the only reason Apple strips off everything they do is to make the damned thing thinner. The battery will be that same mediocre crap it is now. "Pro" my donkey.

Makes sense because who would ever take the laptop on the road? So there wouldn't be any need to buy a dozen different dongles to be able to work whever he needed instead of being chained to his desk. Thanks for clearing that up.

If you are young and/or just starting out in the Mac World, removal of legacy ports may not seem like a big deal. But if you have built pro rigs around "older" ports, you end up with "dongleitis" and potential latency issues for video and audio work. I know coz been through this before. Worse, Apple will introduce all new I/O ports and cables in just a few years and USB-C will be replaced with the "port du jour". Would be nice to throw existing users a bone and leave a couple legacy ports in at least for transitional reasons. And yes, I am having cheese with my whine.;)

You could make that argument about literally any feature: "get rid of it for more battery life". Are you a professional photographer or videographer? No? Then you don't understand that having an SD card built in is a necessary pro feature, on a pro machine. If your livelihood depends on moving things off of SD cards in all kinds of environments, you're going to be a lot happier if you don't have some delicate little adapter sticking out of one of the ports at all times.

I'm not a professional photographer but I do make my money with photographs. Your point? Guess what, I've been living fine with a CF card reader... a build in SD slot is not. a. necessary. pro. feature!

And as has been said before, there are plenty of PRO photographers who still stick with CF. But thanks for your concern on whether or not I have the ability or authority to understand something and chime in on the matter.

I use my computer in the field, so YES, I'm ALL for more more battery life.

And as I've said before, all those comments remind me of the whining when the first MBA or the MBPr were introduced...no CD player? How could Apple dare? And guess what, I don't really hear a lot of people complaining on how they miss that one feature on the go.

If he takes his Thunderbolt Display on the road (the only product mentioned in his post), I will eat my hat. Keep making up nightmare scenarios tho.

Uhhh, getting rid of USB A ports in favor of USB...right after they just launched a new iphone that has a USB A connector on the computer end of things? That doesn't seem right.

Wondering if it'll have a lightning port for headphones now that they're doing away with the headphone jack.

That makes total sense. Now they can sell you an extra USB-C to USB-A dongle so you can get your dongle collection going just to connect to your phone. :)
