Oh please! No!

I want a thicker MacBook Pro that performs like a machine worthy of the title "Pro". That means a graphics card that is actually high-end, instead of this mid-range stuff, and a notebook that runs COOL. Perhaps even cooler than a standard PC?

Of course, none of this matters. Steve Jobs will come up on the stage and say, "Look how thin the new MacBook Pro is. Isn't it amazingly thin? Did I say it's thin? By the way, it has the technology of 2 years ago, but who cares? It's thin!"

I hope it will be at least a 9650m GT inside. It consumes 23W, I think that is coolable as its only 3W more than the 8600m Gt and CPU and logicboard are supposed to be less hungry....

Yep. I'm hoping for at least one MacBook Pro closely speced to a Dell Precision 6400. If not, quit the false advertising and stop calling it a pro.

And Ti > Al.

Oh and small HDDs.

But yeah, just for that graphics remark, it's not possible to take you seriously anymore. If you knew the first thing about modern GPUs you'd be in tears of laughter over someone claiming the 8600M GT was "one of the best" mobile GPUs around, ahaha :D

Ti isn't really better than Aluminum. Certain kinds of Al are stronger than Ti. And they already tried Ti, and it didn't work as well as it should have in the PBs.

Yixian, most of what you write comes from ignorance... this is no exception.

First off, they're planning on making the screen thinner, not the body of the laptop, so they'll shave off thickness that way.

Second off, the MacBook Pro is aimed at people who want a powerful laptop, not a desktop replacement.

I doubt very much you understand how modern GPUs work. In fact, I doubt you could explain to me how even an old VooDoo 2 works.

You also can't seem to grasp the fact that no laptop with the MBPs form factor has anything more powerful than the 8600 GT. There's nothing wrong with the 8600, though it is time for an upgrade. We'll get one.

Quit whining.

i really don't think it's going to be any thinner.

The recent spy shot of the mbp only showed the top and side of the case. The apple.pro spy shot of the bottom case looked very tapered. I think it's going to look thinner because A. the sides of the case are obviously a little thinner and B. the tapering of the bottom case. In reality, however, it will be exactly the same height.

Agree?

It will most likely be thinner, but not the bottom half which houses the main components.

I bet the shavings will come from the thickness of the top portion which houses the screen.

Firefly2002 is right... the screen will be thinner. I think it's obvious from looking at the photos (if they are to be trusted) that the body will remain roughly the same thickness.

apple needs to make more different notebooks than just 4: MBA, MB, MBP15" and MBP17".

I would be happy with a midrange GPU in a 1" thick light MBP at 4.5 pounds.

but that's not really pro. let alone future quadcore.

they need to make a notebook that is 13.3 inch but a MBP in features and they need to make one or two 1.3" thick real MBP's.

i hope the rumor about the 12 pricepoints instead of the current 8 pricepoints is true and they introduce a few more form factors.

Wow! That's funny... but my piddly little 128mb graphics gpu in my MBP just keeps on doing what I ask of it. I'm a pro. I don't need a bigger load to haul around just so I can play PC games in bootcamp - if I want that I'll just get a dedicated game playing machine, and it won't be a laptop.

It's nice to just want the latest or most high performance specs in your machine (of course you'd be unhappy 3 months later...) just so you can say you've got the "best," but please tell us what you actually can't get done with your late generation MBP that you really have to in order to make a living? And if that's the case, you bought the wrong computer in the first place. Simple as that.

Bingo, some of us game and some of us 3D design, those two demographics represent a big enough percentage of PC users to warrant a high end line. It doesn't make any sense not to offer a high end laptop when the Mac Pro sells perfectly well and when more and more people even in the high end are opting for notebooks.

The fanboys can goose step to the current nonsensical model but looking around this forum it's clear a huge portion of potential MBP buyers are only buying the MBP because it's the best they can get with Mac OS X - the best they can get, they have to make do, they want better specs and value for money from the components but like me they won't ever touch a Windows PC.

First of all, the new generations of CPUs run much cooler. Second, if you think that a VAIO is going to make you happier because the MBP is "too thin," enjoy Vista!

Geez people have some faith, we will know soon enough and then gripe about how much "better" it could be. Besides, Do you really think they would release new products that are worst then their predecessors?

honestly, I wish there were thinner, lighter laptops with adequate power for when you're on the move...

but then when you get in the office, you could dock it to a workstation (with it's own CPU and higher end graphics card), and combine the power of the two.... FORMING VOLTRONNNNN... uh... I mean a synergistic multicore computer.

Then we're not left feeling like we use one or the other, ya know?
we can dream can't we?

BELIEVE ME, these laptops are THIN ENOUGH! we do not need em ANY thinner...

the thinner these things get, the easier they can fold (and break).

Hello, this is my first post

Hello everyone, please excuse my english because I am from Hungary. Regarding the upcoming new notebooks and their thickness, nobody mentioned the possible cooling advantages of the new manufacturing process called "the Brick". The whole case is made of a piece of aluminum, so it can be used as as an effective cooling element. The chassis is able to spread heat evenly acting as a large heat sink. The other space saving feature is the led backlighting in the display, but tat was mentioned before.

Although the current MacBook Pro isn't one sheet of aluminium, whole case acts as a heatsink, just like you said. That is what we are complaining about. The case heats up so much, that it can actually burn you. The rim up from the F keys gets really hot, as does the base.

In fact, the table I use my laptop on gets really bloody hot too.

It's good to see more or less everyone agrees Apple are gimping their Pros with thinness. A year ago a lot of people wouldn't admit it.

Couldn't agree more...I have no idea where this obsession w/ thinner gadgets came from...perhaps its a spinoff of the fashion industry, who knows. If the MBP was any thinner it would feel like a toy...ever hold an Air?

Ah man.. if they only put a 9600M GT in the MacBook Pro.. I might actually switch to PC :( That card is already out of date :(

9650M GS at LEAST, I mean come on! :( Why would they put a 9600M GT in over a 9650M GT which is far far more powerful and yet has the same power draw? :(:(:(

And just think, if it was .5" thicker we'd be looking at an 8800M GTX.. MacBook Extreme seems like a perfectly sensible product to introduce..

I don't understand the push for better graphics cards. It's called a Macbook Pro. The Pro stands for Professional. The current 8600m already performs perfectly for any possible work activities. Unless you're wanting to play newer 3D games, which then I'm not sure why you're buying a Mac into the first place, then what does it matter? I'd rather see a card with similar power to the 8600m, but that runs cooler.

because for the price, you really should be getting whats offered by comparable companies, the 9600 really is not good enough. id much prefer the MBP be 2" thick and run cool and be powerful, than be 0.8" and be overheating just so jobs could say "we're really proud of this, we think its really nice" like he does with every other product hes released, which is pretty much the same product but thinner.

Why do you think that everyone should share your exact needs? The MBP is Apple's most powerful notebook line and yes, some of us like to game, and by some of us I mean a LOT of us, many many thousands of potential switchers don't make the jump because there is no high end GPU available on a portable Mac. I am considering make the jump out because of this, but it's hard because Mac OS X is obviously far superior to Windows, which is why people are complaining - Apple offers no solution for us, and there are a lot of us. Instead they produce a strange kind of prosumer/ultraportable mutant.

If they make the screen thinner and leave the base the same, or better yet use tapering to make it a little thicker with appearing so, and make an effort to deliver on the GPU from (that will be even more useful with OpenCL), then most of us will be happy. But instead we're probably going to get a very expensive laptop whose graphics will be out of date in 5 months, but which you can slide under doors - innovation!!
