I'm not clued up enough on this topic in order to be able to interpret your answer. How much faster, compared to the GPU in the upcoming MBP, would you say mobile GPUs will get over the next 2-4 years?
If you do not have enough knowledge to understand my answer, Im affraid, answer to your question will not tell you anything more.

Simplest answer: Only AMD knows. You can extrapolate from the benchmarks, and percentages. If Vega Pro 20 is 60% faster than Radeon Pro 560X from current MBP, you can expect that higher core count GPU with higher core clocks, and more memory bandwidth will also be much faster than RP 560X.

Things are probably going to slow down I would imagine. Intel is having problems with their die shrinks. TSMC is at 7nm, with 5nm projected for 2020. But they usually never meet their deadlines. Then what happens after 5nm? If the yields don't come though they won't mas produce and performance increase will be stagnant.

Wouldn't a eGPU be a more cost effective solution? Using a box like the Razor Core X with the card in? I know its not portable, but it will allow greater upgrade opportunity in the future, not to mention cross compatibility to Windows. I suppose if you want that built into the MacBook Pro then its going to cost lots of cash, but I would worry about the heat being generated and how the MacBook Pro handles it, for example will it thermally throttle the card?
Yes an eGPU would be great for studio work. I just didn’t want to invest in a MacBook Pro when I should have gotten the IMac Pro. They are too expensive to have both. Also both can use a eGPU for some upgradeability.

Radeon Pro 555X to 560X upgrade costs $100, I guess Vega will cost at least $400.

Just to add to that, the original BlackMagic eGPU that Apple started shipping back in July cost $899 CAD. The new BlackMagic eGPU Pro that was just announced will cost $1549 CAD. Based on this speculation, Apple will probably charge a big premium for the Radeon Pro Vega 16/20 upgrades which will be improvements to the current Pro 560x. You're probably right with that ballpark cost of >$400.

At this point, I'm starting to think Apple is taking unfair advantage of the fact that their products are non-upgradable. If the GPU in the BlackMagic eGPU was upgradable, nobody would have to buy the BlackMagic eGPU Pro. Thus, nobody would get screwed over on their initial investments. Same idea with the July-November MBP 15-inch production units.

I wonder how many people, complaining about Apple's pricing Policy asked themselves: how much AMD charges for that GPU?

If AMD charges 150$ for each GPU, expect 300$ BTO cost for MBP.
 
Do you foresee more improvements like this in the years ahead? e.g. 2/3 years from now, will MBP GPUs be another 100%+ more power efficient, or will progress get stuck like it did with Intel CPUs?

No idea. I am sceptical though. Mobile GPUs will benefit a lot from new memory, but I wonder how much architectural improvement is left there to extract yet. We won't know for sure until next process is ready. Nvidia's Turing doesn't really bring any noteworthy efficiency improvements over Pascal, for example.

P.S. So, I wrote this and AMD just announced the new 7nm pro GPUs, claiming 25% improvement in perf/watt. Go figure.

I was browsing the apple store and saw the blurb when you go to order the high spec apple MacBook pro about the radeon under the graphics option. I came here and of course everyone is on the ball with it hehehe. I don't follow graphics card trends, but how reliable and fast are those new vega cards in the current iMac pro etc or in the wild. My late 2013 mbp is getting sluggish with 8gb ram as im doing some heavy multitasking course work. will they release new new MacBook pros again or just have the vega as upgrade options inside.

Nobody knows, because they have not been released, yet.

We don't know how much AMD charges Apple, but whst we do know is that Apples biggest thing is greed.

Take a look at how much Apple charges for storage and RAM. Now take a look at how much would it cost you to purchase that on your own.

Greed is the new Apple.

I told you how much AMD can charge Apple for Polaris 21 chips, considering it was co-developed with Apple.

The same goes for Vega, it was co-developed with Apple. If I would bet anything: Vega 16 will cost 200$, and Vega 20 will cost 300$.

Pretty reasonable prices. hopefully Apple charges this for them.
 
This is quite curious, I love my 13" but should have gone with the 15" due to the screen estate and the dGPU.. (to play WoW & Civ VI on the go..)

As it stands right now I'll wait out for a major redesign to upgrade to a 15".. This Vega news got me curious and excited, I wanna see some high end GPUs on the MacBook Pro for sure but at the same time I don't want throttling.

Either way, I'll be waiting for the 2020 (?) redesign

And what makes you believe that you will experience any throttling? Or that the 2020 redesign will behave any differently to the current one?

The MBP, as a mobile platform, is limited by its chassis size and volume. Any MBP ever released was designed too dissipate around 85-90Watt max in continuous operation, and the 2016+ chassis seems to be better at it than any other before it. Apple could maybe improve the thermal conductivity of their cooling system, allowing slightly longer peak turbo frequencies for the CPU and the GPU. I seriously doubt though that they will or can do anything about that 90Watt limit, unless of course they adopt a Blade-like design with really large open fans.

My redesign purchase has nothing to do with thermals but because I recently bought a 2017 model, no point for me to replace it so fast.
