I don't think its a significant bump to have even worried about. Ill wait till next year after the redesign. Maybe then there will actually be something to be excited about. Until then, Ill stick with my 13" 2010.

I've been waiting for this speed bump before buying my MBP, but the graphics card update has got me re-evaluating which MBP to get and I could do with some advice.

I had planned on getting the top end 15" as the difference in graphics cards seemed worth the price difference. But now I'm not sure what the relative difference is, (that and the sterling price has gone up a bit as well)

Which ever machine I'd get 8GB RAM, and the 7200 rpm hdds

So the options are down to
  • AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB GDDR5 (Which is the card in the old top end with half the VRAM if i'm not mistaken)

    Versus
  • AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 1GB GDDR5
Is the 6770 worth the price difference of approx £220 (Yes I know, some of that is for the faster processor)

I'm planning to use this laptop as my main computer, and in addition to the usual (web surfing, word processing, spreadsheets, programming etc) I'm also planning on doing a fair amount of RAW image processing with some quite large files, mostly using Apeture. I'd also be using Photoshop (Which I think doesn't rely that heavily on the GPU and is more CPU/RAM dependent)

I'll also be playing some games, though nothing more intensive than Civilisation 5 / Sim City

Given that, is the 6770 with the 200mhz faster i7 worth it for my needs? Or would I be shelling out 200 quid for something that I'd never see the benefit of?

Thanks guys

Buy the RAM from Crucial, that'll save you like 150 quids. Does that make your decision easier? :)

Return it if you are within the 14 day period.

Gets a little tricky because it was a gift bought from Best Buy by my girlfriend in another state. Just wondering if it's worth the hassle, I don't push my computer too hard but would like to have the latest and greatest.

Apple won't exchange it then, the 14 day return only applies to stuff bought from them.

The cost of going there and back, plus your spare time, would it be worth the extra GB:s? Only you can answer that...

Thanks, I'm not going to worry about it. The extra CPU won't do anything for me and I'm planning on putting an SSD in it anyways.

You would honestly never know the difference. 100MHz is absolutely nothing now compared to how fast these CPUs are, especially if you're not a heavy user

Before this refresh, I would have definitely paid more to get the high-end model due to the drastic difference in GPUs. Now that the low-end model includes an HD 6750, I would easily stick with the low-end model and save hundreds. The CPU is the same as the last high-end model so it is still a screamer!

Yeh that's what I was thinking too.

I do tend to keep my laptops for a few years tho, so if I would notice the difference given what i'd use the laptop for, I'd be happy to pay the extra £200.

I'm just wondering if I *would* notice the extra 512 MB VRAM and 200 Mhz processor speed when say processing a RAW image? Does Appeture use the GPU quite heavily?

How many slots does the MBP have? If i bought the RAM from Crucial 2 or 4?

If it was a gift from your girlfriend you'd be silly to return it.

2 lots, but if you use the Crucial Memory finder it will get you the right stuff.

Just checked the site, cool. I could get 8GB (2x 4GB) from Crucial for about £50. Guess I could always sell the 2x 2GBs

What's the quality like?

Superb. The warranty is excellent too. Should cost you £43.19 plus you can get cashback from Quidco.

Hopefully somebody can help me with this question...I just bought a 13" MBP 7 days ago from Best Buy, if I went in to exchange for the new MBP, would BB have them yet?? If not, will the Apple Store swap it out? I realize I will need to go to the store and just ask, but I thought I would see if anyone here has had experience with this in the past that could shed some light on what to expect.

Someone get the 17", please, as I would like to know if SSD/sata cable issues are fixed in this rev. ;)

Hi there!

Is it better to buy the high end 13" or the low end 15"?
I'll be using AutoCad and will it be able to run smoothly on 13"? or you recommend the low/end 15"?

thanks and I will be doing games like Dragon Nest...

or

should I go for a pc?

thanks everyone!

Am i not right in thinking that if i personally upgrade the ram of the base 13 inch model to 8gb as opposed to paying for it from apple directly that this will completely void my warrantee with apple. If this is the case im not so sure i would want to do that.

And is the extra 4gb of ram going to make enough difference to warrant a price jump of 80-100 from apple personally ?

They're not showing them on the best buy website so I'm thinking it may be a few days before they stock them in store. Only sure way of knowing is to call your local bb.
